Look at the low-beam section of the headlamp: a distinct round lens in front of the light source is the clearest visual sign of projector optics. A broad, exposed reflective bowl without a separate lens usually indicates a reflector. If the assembly is hard to read, check the owner’s manual or vehicle-specific parts information for your exact year, market, and trim.
How to check your headlamps
- Park the vehicle and switch the lamps off. Inspect the headlamps from the front through the clear outer cover.
- Find the low-beam section. Headlamp assemblies can contain separate elements for high beams, daytime running lights, and turn signals; do not identify the whole assembly from one of those other elements.
- Look at the optics in front of the low-beam source. A distinct round lens is the usual projector cue. A wide reflective bowl with no separate lens points toward a reflector design.
- Verify an unclear result. Cloudy covers, dirt, or styling elements can obscure the optics. Consult the manual for the precise model year, market, and trim, or use manufacturer parts information.
Projector and reflector describe the optics, not the bulb
These terms describe how a headlamp directs light. They do not identify whether its source is halogen, HID, or LED. Bulb type, bulb number, and light color alone cannot tell you whether the low beam uses projector or reflector optics. Ford’s owner-manual instructions separately describe projector and reflector assemblies, while Philips’ 2017 LED-HL installation instructions identify a product for use with both types of headlight.

Confirm the equipment for your exact vehicle
Equipment can vary by model year, market, and trim. Ford’s US-market online manual distinguishes projector and reflector assemblies in its bulb-replacement instructions and cautions that online content may not match every vehicle. Ford says, “Please consider the Owner’s Manual originally provided with your vehicle as the primary source of information for your vehicle.” See Ford owner manuals and select the information for your vehicle.
If you are checking a bulb or planning a replacement, do not assume that a projector-looking lens makes any LED or HID bulb suitable. Source compatibility and replacement-lamp rules depend on the vehicle and jurisdiction.
