Yes. Project Zomboid supports local split-screen co-op, Steam Remote Play Together and ordinary online multiplayer. Split-screen puts multiple survivors on one PC in the same room. Remote Play Together streams that local session to a friend, so only the host needs to own and install the game. Standard online play gives each participant a separate game client, while a dedicated server keeps a persistent world running independently of one player’s session.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Project Zomboid servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The important qualification is Build 42. The Indie Stone’s 2025 announcement describes multiplayer in Unstable Build 42.13 as work in progress and intended for stress testing. For the most predictable experience, use the default/stable branch for established multiplayer or follow the announcement’s advice to use Steam co-op or whitelisted servers when testing Build 42.

How Project Zomboid multiplayer options differ
Steam currently lists Project Zomboid with Online Co-op, Shared/Split Screen Co-op and Steam Remote Play Together. It also identifies local split-screen co-op and Xbox Controller Gamepad support on Windows. Those labels describe several different ways to play, not one universal multiplayer mode.
| Method | Where players are | Who needs a game copy | World persistence | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local split-screen | Same room, one Windows PC | The host’s installed copy is sufficient | Runs while the host session is active | Couch co-op |
| Steam Remote Play Together | Different locations, streamed from the host PC | Only the host needs to own and install the game | Runs while the host session is active | A friend joining a local-style game remotely |
| Ordinary online co-op | Each player connects over the internet | Normally, each player uses their own copy | Depends on the host or server arrangement | Players who want separate clients and online play |
| Dedicated server | Internet-connected players | Players need game access; the server runs separately | Persistent between individual play sessions | Long-running communities and administered worlds |
Remote Play Together is not a second dedicated server. Steam captures the game’s audio and video on the host computer and sends it to the invited player; keyboard, mouse or gamepad input travels back to the host’s game process. The host’s PC therefore performs the simulation and must remain running.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Local split-screen on one PC
What you need
- A Windows PC with Project Zomboid installed through Steam.
- A controller for every additional local player. A USB gamepad or Xbox-compatible PC controller is the practical choice; keyboard-and-mouse arrangements are less convenient for a second survivor.
- A display large enough for the number of split-screen views you plan to use.
- A saved or newly created world that the host can load.
Steam’s listing confirms controller support on Windows, but it does not publish a universal frame-rate target or minimum hardware specification for a particular number of split-screen players. Performance depends on the world, settings, resolution and the host PC, so treat any claimed “typical” frame rate as unofficial.
Starting a couch co-op session
- Connect the host’s keyboard, mouse or controller and connect the additional controller before launching the game. Wired USB connections make it easier to diagnose recognition problems.
- Start Project Zomboid on the branch you intend to use. If you are testing Build 42, read the current Unstable branch notes first and back up saves before opening them.
- Use the game’s normal single-player or host flow to create a world or load an existing one. The exact menu wording can change between builds.
- When the world is running, have the second player press the join or player-add control shown on screen. Project Zomboid’s current build displays the available local player-join flow; select the recognized controller and create or select that player’s survivor.
- Repeat the join action for additional local players, if the build and hardware can handle them. Each survivor receives an individual view in the shared display.
- Save and exit through the host’s normal menu. Because this is a host session, the world is not available while the host is offline unless you move it to a server-based setup.
If the second controller is not detected
- Close other applications that may have claimed the controller, then reconnect it before starting the game.
- In Steam, verify that the controller is visible and that the intended layout is active. Avoid changing layouts while the game is assigning a player.
- Test one controller at a time to identify duplicate mappings or a cable, battery or Bluetooth problem.
- Restart the game after changing controller settings. A device connected after the world loads may not appear in the current join prompt.
Playing remotely with Steam Remote Play Together
Remote Play Together turns a local co-op session into a remote one. Steam’s documentation says friends can be invited “as though they were sitting at the same computer playing together” and that only the host needs to own and install the game. The remote participant does not receive a separate simulation; their controls are forwarded to the host machine.
Setup steps
- Install and launch Project Zomboid on the host PC, then start the local co-op-capable world.
- Open the Steam Overlay, usually with
Shift+Tab, and open the Friends list. - Choose a friend and select the Remote Play Together invitation. The label and placement may vary with the current Steam client.
- Have the invited player accept the invitation and connect a gamepad. A controller is strongly preferable because the remote player is joining a local controller slot rather than running a full independent desktop client.
- Return to the game and use the on-screen local player-join prompt for the arriving input device. The friend then creates or selects a survivor.
- Adjust Steam’s streaming, audio and input permissions if necessary. The host should keep the game and Steam running for the entire session.
Because the host renders and simulates everything, the host’s processor, graphics settings and upload connection affect everyone. The remote player’s download connection affects how quickly the stream arrives, while their input must travel back to the host. High latency can make combat, driving and inventory actions feel delayed even when the host’s frame rate is acceptable.
Remote Play Together versus buying another copy
Remote Play Together is useful when one person owns the game and wants to share a temporary session. It does not create an independently running world for the invited player, and closing the host’s game ends the session for everyone. Ordinary online multiplayer is the better fit when each participant wants their own client, independent graphics settings or the ability to connect to a server without the original host streaming the game.

Ordinary online co-op and host sessions
Steam’s Online Co-op feature covers internet play in which players connect as separate clients. In this arrangement, assume each participant needs access to their own copy unless the specific invitation mechanism says otherwise. The host creates or loads the world, invites or shares the connection details supported by the current build, and remains responsible for the session when using the in-game host option.
A host-based online world is different from Remote Play Together even though both can involve friends in other locations. Remote Play sends a video stream and controller input through Steam. Online co-op sends game-network traffic between separate running clients. The latter lets each player render their own view and use their own keyboard, mouse or controller, but it generally requires each player to own the game.
What changes in Unstable Build 42
Build 42 multiplayer is branch-sensitive. The Indie Stone’s official 2025 announcement states: “Unstable Build 42.13, which contains multiplayer support, has been released.” It also says, “Multiplayer is WIP and has been released for stress testing,” and strongly advises players to use whitelisted servers or Steam co-op for the best experience.
During that unstable stress-test release, the developers said it was inadvisable to exceed 20 players on a server. That is a warning for that Build 42.13 unstable context, not a permanent player-cap specification for every future version. Check the current announcement and branch notes before planning a larger server.

Safe procedure for testing Build 42 multiplayer
- Confirm that every participant is on the same branch and game version. A stable client and an Unstable client may not be able to join the same world.
- Back up saves before switching branches. The developers warned that future Unstable updates can disrupt ongoing multiplayer games and that older saves may become incompatible.
- Use a disposable test world for early sessions instead of your main long-term save.
- Prefer Steam co-op or a whitelisted server while the implementation is experimental, following the developer recommendation.
- After an update, read the branch notes before loading the world. If the save no longer works, restore the backup and return all players to the matching branch rather than repeatedly opening the original file.
Dedicated servers for persistent worlds
A dedicated server is the option for a world that should continue independently of one player’s desktop session. The server process stores the world and applies its configuration while players connect with their own game clients. This is more suitable for a regular group, a community or an administrator who needs scheduled restarts, controlled access and persistent progress.

- Use Project Zomboid’s in-game Host option for a simpler host-managed world when constant availability is not required.
- Install the Project Zomboid Dedicated Server through Steam and run it on a separate or always-on machine for a persistent setup.
Dedicated-server details are highly version-sensitive. Before choosing a hosting provider or public server, verify its supported branch, player limit, mod compatibility, backup policy, uptime, administration tools and current price. Provider terms and affiliate arrangements can change, so do not assume that a service supporting the stable branch also supports Unstable Build 42.

Troubleshooting common co-op problems
The friend accepts Remote Play but cannot join
Check that the host has already loaded a world and that the invited player’s controller appears in Steam’s Remote Play input panel. Disconnect unused devices, reconnect the active gamepad and use the in-game local join prompt. If the stream works but no player slot appears, restart the game after reconnecting the controller.
The stream is blurry or controls feel delayed
Remote Play is a live video stream, not a direct network session. Reduce the host’s graphics load, close competing downloads and use a wired connection where possible. The host should also verify that Steam is forwarding the invited player’s controller rather than keyboard input intended for the host.

Players cannot connect after an update
Compare the exact branch and version shown in each Steam installation. Build 42 Unstable updates can change compatibility and may disrupt existing multiplayer games. Restore the pre-update backup if necessary, then have everyone use the same branch before trying again.

For Build 42.13’s unstable stress-test release, the developers advised against exceeding 20 players. Reduce the simultaneous population, use a whitelisted server and check later branch notes before increasing capacity. Do not treat a community’s advertised slot count as proof that a particular Build 42 version is supported.
Bottom line
Project Zomboid does have split-screen and co-op. Use local split-screen with extra controllers for couch play, Steam Remote Play Together when one host wants to bring a remote friend into that local session, ordinary online co-op when players have separate copies, and a dedicated server for a persistent world. Treat Build 42 multiplayer as experimental until the current branch documentation says otherwise, keep backups, and match every player and server to the same version.
