Unbreaking reduces how often an eligible Minecraft item loses durability. It extends the useful life of tools, weapons, armor and certain other equipment, but it does not make them indestructible. The normal maximum is Unbreaking III. At that level, a typical durability-consuming use has about a 25% chance to reduce durability, so tools and weapons have an expected service life of roughly four times their unenchanted life under the usual mechanics model.

Armor follows different durability rules: the cited Minecraft Wiki estimate is about 43% longer life for Unbreaking III armor, not the fourfold tool result. Whether it is worth adding depends on how often you use the item, how expensive it is to replace, and whether you can repair it with Mending or another method.

What Unbreaking does in Minecraft
Microsoft’s creator documentation describes the enchantment plainly: “Unbreaking | Reduces the durability damage this item takes.” Minecraft Help summarizes the same effect as “Increases item durability” and lists a maximum enchantment level of 3.
In practical terms, Unbreaking gives each ordinary durability-consuming action a chance to cost nothing. Mining a block, striking an enemy or taking damage while wearing enchanted armor can therefore leave the item’s durability unchanged. The enchantment does not add a separate pool of durability points, and it does not prevent every use from consuming durability. Once the item’s durability reaches zero, it can still break normally.

Unbreaking applies only to eligible equipment and to actions that would otherwise damage that equipment. It is not a universal protection effect: it does not make a tool mine faster, increase weapon damage, or stop armor from reducing incoming damage. Those are separate enchantment or item properties.
How the Unbreaking levels work
For most items in the cited Java mechanics reference, the chance that a normal use consumes durability is 1/(level + 1). The resulting figures are probabilities over many uses, not guarantees for one item or a short test.

These expected multipliers describe repeated, ordinary durability uses on tools and weapons. They do not promise that every pickaxe will last exactly four times as long. Random rolls can produce a shorter or longer run, especially when you test only one item.
Why armor is different
Armor has special durability-consumption behavior, so the tool-and-weapon multiplier should not be applied to a helmet, chestplate, leggings or boots. The cited Minecraft Wiki best-enchantments guide estimates that Unbreaking III armor lasts about 43% longer. That is still useful during long combat, exploration or mining sessions, but the relative improvement is smaller than the roughly fourfold tool estimate.
Java and Bedrock can differ in edge cases involving particular items or actions. The probability table is the usual rule for most items in the cited Java reference; check the mechanics for your edition when an unusual item or interaction matters.

Does Unbreaking make gear last forever?
No. Unbreaking changes the odds for each qualifying durability event; it does not remove the item’s durability limit. A streak of successful uses can make an item seem nearly permanent, while an unlucky sequence can consume several durability points quickly. Given enough durability-consuming uses, the item will eventually wear down unless it is repaired or replaced.

A frequently used tool still needs a repair plan, even when it has Unbreaking III. Treat the enchantment as a way to reduce maintenance frequency, not as a substitute for maintenance.
Who benefits most from Unbreaking?
Frequently used tools
Pickaxes, axes, shovels and hoes are strong candidates because routine work can generate hundreds or thousands of durability events. Unbreaking III is especially valuable on high-tier tools that are costly or inconvenient to replace. The more often you use a tool between repair opportunities, the more value you get from avoiding each durability roll.
Weapons used regularly
Swords, bows, crossbows and tridents benefit when they are part of everyday combat. A weapon carried only for occasional emergencies may not justify spending a scarce enchantment opportunity, while a primary weapon used for extended exploration usually does. Unbreaking is also useful before you have a dependable repair or experience setup.
Expensive or heavily worn armor
Unbreaking is worthwhile on armor that would be expensive or time-consuming to replace, or that you wear through long combat and exploration sessions. Because armor’s durability behavior differs from tools, the gain is less dramatic, but avoiding some durability loss still reduces repair frequency.

Other eligible equipment
Microsoft’s Bedrock item list includes fishing rods and turtle shells in addition to the main armor, tool and weapon classes. Whether to enchant these depends on how often you use them and how difficult they are for you to replace. Do not assume that every item with a durability bar follows exactly the same rule; unusual items can have edition-specific behavior.
Is Unbreaking III worth it?
For most repeatedly used tools and weapons, Unbreaking III is the normal long-term target because it gives the best level available under the standard cap. The decision is less automatic for armor or rarely used equipment. Use the following comparison rather than choosing solely by enchantment level.

Also consider your repair access. If you frequently gain experience and can keep the item repaired with Mending, Unbreaking still helps by making each repair interval longer. If you have neither Mending nor a convenient repair route, Unbreaking becomes more important because replacement or conventional repair happens less often.
Unbreaking versus Mending
Unbreaking and Mending address different parts of item maintenance. Unbreaking reduces the number of durability points consumed. Mending repairs the item when the player collects experience orbs, using that experience for the repair instead of adding it directly to the player’s level total, as described by Microsoft’s enchantment documentation.

When both enchantments can be placed on the same eligible item, they are complementary rather than substitutes: Unbreaking slows the damage, and Mending restores durability that is eventually lost. A player with a reliable experience source may value that combination on permanent gear; a player without one should not assume Mending alone will keep an item healthy.

How to apply Unbreaking
Microsoft documents two standard routes: enchanting an item at an enchanting table, or applying an enchanted book or another item through an anvil. The exact enchantment availability and level cost depend on the edition, world conditions and the particular item, so there is no universal cheapest method.
- Choose the item. Start with the tool, weapon, armor piece or other eligible equipment that gets enough use to justify the enchantment.
- Use an enchanting table. Place the item in the table, review the offered enchantments and select an option only when the displayed result and level cost fit your plan. Enchanting-table offers are affected by the world’s available bookshelves and other edition rules.
- Use an enchanted book when you have one. Put the item and the Unbreaking book into an anvil, then confirm the displayed experience cost. The book route lets you wait for a specific enchantment instead of accepting a random table offer.
- Combine compatible gear in an anvil. An anvil can merge an enchanted item with another item when the combination is allowed. Check the resulting enchantments and cost before confirming, because repeated anvil work can become expensive.
- Verify the result. Open the item’s tooltip after applying the enchantment and confirm the level. Test the item in normal use rather than judging it from a few durability events; the effect is probabilistic.
Recommended priorities by equipment type
Pickaxes, axes, shovels and hoes
Put Unbreaking high on the list for tools used continuously in mines, farms or large builds. A frequently used high-tier tool gains the clearest practical benefit from the approximately fourfold expected durability at level III. If you keep a backup tool, prioritize the one that does most of the work.
Swords and ranged weapons
Choose Unbreaking III for a primary sword or ranged weapon that sees regular combat. For a bow, crossbow or trident used only for occasional situations, first decide whether another enchantment or a repair method solves a more immediate problem. Unbreaking is most valuable when the item’s durability would otherwise interrupt a long expedition.
Armor
Prioritize pieces that are expensive to replace or receive constant wear, such as the armor you use for every trip. The cited estimate of about 43% longer life at Unbreaking III is meaningful, but it is not equivalent to the tool multiplier. If one armor piece is taking damage faster than the others, upgrading that piece first can reduce the number of repairs you need.
Fishing rods and turtle shells
These appear on Microsoft’s Bedrock list of items that can receive Unbreaking. Enchant them when they are part of your regular routine and replacement is inconvenient; otherwise, the saved durability may be too small to justify the resources.

Common mistakes and troubleshooting
Expecting a guaranteed 75% saving
At Unbreaking III, “about 75% of uses avoid durability loss” is a long-run probability, not a promise for the next four uses. A short test can look unusually good or bad without indicating that the enchantment is broken.

Armor does not receive the same expected multiplier as most tools and weapons. Use the armor-specific estimate of about 43% longer life at III when comparing gear, and keep edition-specific exceptions in mind.
Ignoring use frequency
An enchantment on a rarely used backup item saves little. Compare the item’s actual durability consumption, replacement cost and repair access before spending an enchanted book or anvil operation.
Assuming every edition behaves identically
The broad effect and level cap are documented by Microsoft, while the numerical probability figures come from Minecraft Wiki mechanics references. Java and Bedrock may differ in edge cases, so verify the relevant edition for unusual items or interactions instead of extending the standard rule blindly.
Forgetting the repair plan
Unbreaking slows wear but cannot restore lost durability. Decide in advance whether the item will be repaired with Mending and experience, repaired or combined through an anvil, or replaced when it becomes too damaged. That plan determines how much value the enchantment provides in your world.
