The Indie Stone says Build 41 savegames are not compatible with Build 42, so a server owner must either keep the existing world on Steam’s legacy41 branch or begin a new Build 42 world. A separate incompatibility affects Unstable 42.19 saves: continue those on the 42.19 branch rather than moving them to stable 42.20.

What the Build 42 upgrade actually means
Build 42.20 was announced as the stable release for 29 July 2026. It is not an in-place database conversion for Build 41. The practical model is a branch decision:

The Unstable channel is explicitly a work in progress. The Indie Stone warns that saves can break after Unstable updates and recommends starting a fresh save with each Unstable update. Treat every branch change as a potential data migration, not as a routine patch.

Choose the correct branch before touching files
Keep a Build 41 community alive
Select Steam’s legacy41 beta branch for the dedicated server and every player client. This is the only supported path in the supplied compatibility guidance for continuing a Build 41 world. Pinning the branch prevents an automatic update from placing the server on Build 42 while clients remain on Build 41.
Start a new Build 42.20 server
Select the current stable Build 42.20 files, create a new world, and migrate only the settings and content you have independently verified. Do not copy a Build 41 save directory into the active Build 42 save location and call it converted. Keep the original world archived so players can return to legacy41 if the new game is not ready.

Finish an Unstable 42.19 run
Use Steam’s 42.19 beta branch. Stable 42.20 added map content, so an Unstable 42.19 save cannot be presumed safe on 42.20. This branch is a preservation choice for that particular run, not a recommendation to remain on Unstable for a new long-term community.

Pre-upgrade preparation
1. Announce a maintenance window
Tell players when the server will stop, which branch it will use afterward, and whether the destination is a fresh world. Freeze construction, trading, and scheduled events before the shutdown so no one is working from a copy that will immediately become obsolete.
2. Stop the server cleanly
Use the host panel’s stop action or the server’s normal shutdown process. Never copy save files while the Java process or dedicated-server process is writing them. A live copy can contain incomplete map chunks, player data, or database records and may fail when restored.
3. Make a dated, restorable backup
Copy the complete Zomboid server-data tree to storage that is not modified by the upgrade. Include:

- World saves and map data.
- Server configuration files and sandbox settings.
- The
Mods=list and Workshop item configuration. - Logs from the last known-good session.
- Administrative lists, bans, and permissions.
- Launch scripts, environment files, scheduled-task definitions, and custom automation.
Name the archive with the server name, branch, and shutdown date. Record where it is stored and test that it can be opened. Keep this copy immutable until the new server has completed a real play session and the rollback decision window has closed.
4. Record the current configuration
Before updating, capture the current game build and Steam branch, server name, ports, launch arguments, administrator accounts, Workshop IDs, mod load order, operating system, and Java/runtime settings supplied by your host. Screenshots of control-panel fields are useful when a provider regenerates configuration during an update.
Updating a dedicated server
Self-hosted or virtual-machine installation
- Stop the server and complete the backup described above.
- In SteamCMD or your installation method, select the intended branch: stable Build 42.20,
legacy41, or42.19. The dedicated-server application ID is380870; verify the current branch-selection syntax in the SteamCMD or host documentation before running it. - Update the server files without deleting the archived data tree. Keep the old installation or a restorable snapshot available.
- Point the updated service at a disposable test save or a newly generated world. Do not place the production Build 41 save in a Build 42 save path.
- Start once, review the logs for missing files, failed Workshop downloads, Java errors, and port-binding failures, then stop the test instance.
Managed control-panel installation
- Use the panel’s version, branch, or beta selector to choose the destination branch. If the panel offers only “latest,” ask the host how to pin
legacy41or42.19before updating. - Download or create a full backup through the panel, then download a copy to storage you control. Confirm whether the backup includes saves, configuration, Workshop data, logs, and scripts; do not assume a button labelled “backup” covers all of them.
- Apply the update during the maintenance window and keep the old backup untouched.
- Launch a test world, connect with an administrator account, save and reload, and inspect the console before inviting the full player group.
Whether self-hosted or managed, update the server and clients to the same branch and build. A player on Build 41 cannot join a Build 42 server, and a client on stable 42.20 should not be used to test a 42.19 server.

Build 42 mod migration
Build 41 mods are not automatically safe in Build 42. The Unstable guidance advises disabling mods, and Build 42 introduces version-specific mod directories so a Workshop item can carry separate Build 41 and Build 42 content. That architecture helps authors publish parallel versions; it does not certify every existing item.
Audit before enabling anything
- Export the old
Mods=line and Workshop collection before changing branches. - For each item, confirm that its author lists Build 42 support and identify the supported branch or game version.
- Remove B41-only items from the test server rather than allowing them to fail during startup.
- Check dependencies, map requirements, and load order individually.
- Enable a small batch, restart, and inspect logs before adding the next batch.
Maps and scripted gameplay mods deserve extra caution because they can write persistent data. Test them on a disposable world first. If a mod has separate B41 and B42 folders, use only the folder documented for your branch. Keep the original B41 mod list in the backup so the legacy41 rollback remains reproducible.
Ports, firewalls, and connection failures
The official networking notice identifies two default UDP ports:

These are defaults, not guarantees. If you changed either setting, open and forward the actual configured values and give players the matching connection information. Build 42 does not inherently require a second set of ports; an upgrade normally uses the same configured ports.

- Confirm the server process is running and listening on the configured UDP ports.
- Check that the operating-system firewall rule allows UDP, not only TCP.
- Verify router port forwarding points to the machine’s current private IP address.
- Check whether a hosting provider, cloud security group, or second firewall blocks the same ports.
- Confirm the server’s query port and direct-connection port were not changed by a regenerated configuration.
If the server appears but connection fails
- Make sure the client and server use the identical branch and build.
- Compare the client’s enabled mods and Workshop versions with the server’s list and load order.
- Read both client and server logs for missing Workshop items, checksum errors, authentication failures, or a port mismatch.
- Test with a clean client profile or no mods to separate networking from content incompatibility.
First-start validation checklist
- Start the destination branch with a copied test save or a disposable new world.
- Wait for world generation and Workshop downloads to finish; do not invite players while the console is still reporting startup errors.
- Connect locally or from a controlled external client using an administrator account.
- Join, move through several areas, quit normally, restart the server, and verify that the character and world changes persist.
- Test a second, non-administrator account to confirm ordinary permissions and spawn behavior.
- Only after a successful save/load cycle should you schedule the community return.
Rollback and recovery
Rollback is a branch change plus data restoration, not merely reinstalling binaries. Stop the failed server, preserve its logs, and do not overwrite the known-good archive. Restore the complete server-data tree associated with the old branch, select the matching branch, restore the recorded mod list, and verify ports before starting.
For a Build 41 community, that means restoring the B41 data and selecting legacy41. For an Unstable 42.19 run, restore its data and select 42.19. If a new Build 42.20 world has already been used, keep it as a separate data set; never merge its files into the restored older world.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Managed hosting can reduce routine operating work, but it does not remove compatibility decisions. Before signing up or migrating, verify that the service supports the exact Build 42 branch you need, exposes the files and logs required for troubleshooting, and provides backups that include the complete Zomboid data set.

Choose self-hosting when you need unrestricted file access and can perform tested backups, updates, and network administration. Choose managed hosting when reducing operational labor is worth the recurring fee, provided the host documents Build 42 branch support and lets you recover your data independently.

During Unstable Build 42 multiplayer testing, The Indie Stone advised disabling mods, avoiding more than 20 players, and expecting future updates to disrupt ongoing games. Those warnings describe that testing period; they are not permanent player-cap rules for stable 42.20. They do illustrate why an Unstable server needs frequent backups, a pinned branch, and a clear willingness to abandon a broken test world.
