Project management software with time tracking links estimates and logged hours to the tasks or work items they belong to. That connection lets a team compare planned effort with actual work and review progress without treating time records as a separate spreadsheet. The best fit depends on the workflow: whether you need timers, manual entries, estimate-versus-actual reporting, billable tags, timesheet approvals, or simply a reliable work log.
What to compare before choosing
Time tracking is useful when a time entry stays attached to the work item it describes. Before selecting a product, check these capabilities against your team’s process:

- Native or integrated tracking: Find out whether the timer and work log are part of the project tool or depend on a connected provider. An integration may add features, but it also introduces another vendor and data path.
- Timer and manual entry: Timers capture work as it happens; manual entries cover meetings, offline work, and retrospective logging. Check whether the tool supports both.
- Estimates and actuals: Confirm that estimates can be recorded against tasks and compared with logged and remaining time in reports.
- Billable work: If client billing matters, check whether entries can be marked billable and whether reports support your invoicing process.
- Reporting and approvals: Determine whether managers can group time by project, worker, or date, and whether timesheets can be reviewed or approved.
- Plan limits and permissions: Verify current entitlements, usage limits, approval features, and who can create, view, or edit entries on the exact plan.
- Data handling: Review the privacy and security terms for the platform and any connected provider that processes or stores time records.
How the documented tools handle time
The following comparison describes capabilities in official product and help documentation, not independent performance or value rankings. Features and plan entitlements can change; confirm them for your region and subscription before deciding.

| Tool | How time is recorded and connected to work | Estimates, reports, or approvals | Plan and data considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asana | Actual time can be recorded with a timer or entered manually, with time fields on projects. Asana Help: Time tracking | Asana describes estimated-versus-actual charts, historical logs, dashboards, and CSV exports. Reporting can include assignee, project section, and priority. Asana: Time tracking | The help page lists Advanced, Enterprise, Enterprise Plus, and certain legacy plans as eligible. The feature page identifies Advanced, Enterprise, and Enterprise Plus; check current eligibility for your plan. |
| ClickUp | ClickUp describes background timers and manual entries. Time can roll up from subtasks and nested subtasks; Business and higher workspaces can track time without associating it with a task. ClickUp: Project time tracking ClickUp Help: Intro to time tracking | Its product page describes reporting by project, person, or date range, billable rates, exportable reports, and timesheet approval. Approval availability varies by plan. | ClickUp’s plan table lists 100 time-entry uses on Free Forever and unlimited uses on listed paid plans for creating, editing, or deleting entries. Advanced features have separate limits; approvals are not listed on Free Forever or Unlimited, are limited on Business, and listed as available on Business Plus and Enterprise. ClickUp says availability and limits may change. ClickUp Help: Feature availability and limits |
| Jira Cloud | Jira Cloud supports work logging on issues, with original estimates and records of actual work. Time tracking is enabled by default and can be configured by administrators. Atlassian Support: Log work on an issue Atlassian Support: Configure time tracking | Teams can compare original estimates with actual and remaining time, and review work logs by work item. Permissions govern who can view or edit records. | Administrators can configure working hours and days, time display formats, default units, and permissions. Marketplace providers can replace the default provider to add functionality; assess their privacy and security terms because data may be stored with the app developer. |
Which workflow is the best fit?
Choose around estimates and project reporting
If your main question is whether work is taking more or less time than planned, prioritize estimate fields and reports that compare estimates with actuals. Asana documents estimates and actuals in project fields and charts; Jira Cloud supports original estimates, logged work, and remaining time. ClickUp’s published materials emphasize time entry, timesheets, and reporting. Check that the views answer the questions your team actually asks.

- Snag-resistant coil and extra-strong back are perfect for notes on the go

Choose around time entry habits
Teams that record work as it happens may value a convenient timer. Teams with meetings, interruptions, offline work, or retrospective logging need a clear manual-entry path as well. Asana and ClickUp document both timer and manual methods; Jira Cloud documents work logging. Confirm how users will enter time on the devices and in the workflow they use.
Choose around client billing and review
For client work, verify billable tagging, rates, exports, and any approval step rather than assuming a time report is ready for invoicing. ClickUp describes billable entries and timesheet approvals, with plan-dependent limits and availability. Asana documents reporting and CSV export. Jira Cloud’s cited guidance covers work logs, estimates, and permissions; it does not establish the same billing or approval workflow.

How to compare estimated and actual project hours
- Set an estimate on each meaningful work item. Use the same unit and estimation convention across the project so totals are comparable.
- Log actual work against that item. Use a timer for contemporaneous tracking or manual entry for work recorded later. Keep time associated with the task or issue whenever possible.
- Review actual and remaining time against the original estimate. Look for where variance is concentrated by work item, project, or person, using the reports your tool provides.
- Use the variance to improve planning. A logged-hours comparison can show where estimates need adjustment; it does not, by itself, explain why work took longer or measure quality.
Check the plan and permissions before rollout
Do not infer feature access from a product’s general feature page. Asana’s help documentation names eligible plans, and ClickUp publishes plan-specific usage limits and approval availability. Jira Cloud administrators can configure tracking and control who may log or view work. Confirm the exact subscription, roles, and limits with the vendor’s current documentation before standardizing a workflow.
If a Jira Marketplace app is needed for more advanced tracking, evaluate the app separately from Jira itself. Atlassian warns that third-party providers may store data with their developers, so review each provider’s data-security and privacy statements before connecting it.
