Hitachi 55QLEDSM20 Review: Specs, Smart Features and Mounting

The Hitachi 55QLEDSM20 is documented as a 55-inch 4K, 60 Hz Android TV with Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Chromecast-enabled casting and USB recording features. But the available public evidence is not enough to call it a good or bad performer: CHOICE marks the model discontinued, and its detailed test results are member-only. This review therefore covers what the Australian-market documentation establishes—and what it does not.

Is the Hitachi 55QLEDSM20 a good TV?

There is not enough accessible performance evidence to give it a reliable picture-quality, sound-quality, gaming, reliability or value verdict. CHOICE’s public listing identifies an expert review, but its rating, pros, cons and test results are restricted to members. The public page does not show the underlying observations or measurements, so its listing cannot substantiate a performance recommendation.

What can be said from the documentation is that this is a 55-inch 4K LCD television with a 60 Hz refresh rate and Android TV features. Those specifications describe capability, not how bright, contrasty, responsive or good-sounding the set is in use. CHOICE labels the model discontinued; its page-listed $899 price is not a current offer or evidence of today’s used-market value.

Does it have Android TV and streaming features?

Yes. The manual describes Android TV, Google Play Store downloads, casting from Chromecast-enabled apps or browsers, Google Assistant voice interaction, Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet. These are documented platform features, not confirmation that every app or service remains available today. App catalogs, operating-system support and streaming-service requirements can change over time.

The manual says streaming quality depends on internet speed and subscription level. It specifically notes that Netflix playback may be below 4K depending on those factors. That is the manual’s description, not independent verification of current Netflix compatibility or service availability.

What can you connect or record?

The documented connections include three HDMI inputs, two USB 2.0 ports, optical audio, antenna, AV and Ethernet. The manual describes USB storage use for recording free-to-air digital TV and pausing live TV. It does not establish a universally compatible drive model or capacity, so check the TV’s instructions and test a drive before relying on it for scheduled recordings.

Wi-Fi is built in, while the manual recommends a wired network connection for the best streaming experience. Ethernet is useful if the television is near a router or network switch; Wi-Fi avoids running a cable where that is impractical.

What wall mount fits the Hitachi 55QLEDSM20?

The manual specifies a 400 mm mounting pattern and M6 × 12 mm screws, or longer screws as required by the bracket. A 400 × 400 mm VESA-style wall mount is the relevant pattern to look for, but the manual does not verify any particular bracket. The bracket is not included.

  • Confirm the mount supports the television’s weight and the actual mounting pattern on your set.
  • Check that the supplied screws are M6 and the correct length for the bracket and TV; do not use longer screws unless the bracket instructions call for them.
  • Use appropriate wall fixings for the wall construction and follow the mount maker’s installation instructions.
  • The manual advises professional assistance for wall mounting and says not to stand the TV upright without its stand attached.

What is not established by the available evidence?

The accessible specifications and manual do not establish measured brightness, contrast, HDR quality, viewing angles, motion handling, sound quality, gaming latency, reliability or current app support. They also do not establish HDMI 2.1 or 4K-at-120-Hz capability. If you are evaluating a used set, inspect its condition and confirm the functions you need in person; for a comparison with another television, prioritize independent measurements and current availability rather than assuming the higher specification list means better performance.
