Project Bike Leg is a lower-limb prosthesis concept developed by prosthetist Ben Hogan using bicycle components that may be easier to find than conventional prosthetic supplies in some settings. Hogan shares instructional videos about the design, but available reporting describes prototypes and plans—not a clinically validated, ready-to-use replacement for professionally fitted prostheses.
What is Project Bike Leg?
Project Bike Leg is Hogan’s initiative to make a prosthetic leg from bicycle parts and other readily available materials. The idea is aimed at places where access to conventional prosthetic supply chains and specialist resources can be limited. In a 2025 feature, Hogan described his goal as making a “feasible, lightweight, functional and adjustable prosthesis” that people could assemble with materials they already had.

The project shares instructional videos, and a local report describes fabrication involving tools such as drills, saws, sanders, hammers and grinders. Those details explain the general approach; they do not amount to a complete bill of materials or a validated build protocol. A cordless drill is one tool mentioned in the reporting, but no particular brand or model is endorsed.

The premise is practical: bicycles and their components may be more locally available than specialized prosthetic parts, and common tools may make fabrication more feasible where specialist services are scarce. That is the design’s stated appeal, not proof that materials are consistently available or that a locally assembled device will fit or perform safely.

The reporting recounts that Hogan first sketched the idea after encountering an earlier account of a prosthesis made from bicycle components. He returned to it after gaining experience in prosthetics and refined the design by late 2024. His rationale addresses access to materials; whether the approach can meet an individual’s clinical needs is a separate question.
What has been built—and what remains a plan?
A 2025 feature reports that engineering students at the University of Michigan made a version after watching a tutorial. It also reports Hogan’s goal of a future pilot involving at least 100 devices. That pilot is described as planned, not completed, and the reporting does not give results from a clinical trial or patient-outcome study.

The feature also says a proposal was accepted for presentation at the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics’ 2025 conference. Acceptance to present is not clinical endorsement, product certification or evidence that the device has been independently evaluated for safety.

Fit and adjustability, repairability, durability under use and clinical outcomes would all need to be assessed. The available accounts do not provide comparative results on those measures.

For now, the most accurate description is an access-oriented design initiative with prototypes, tutorials and ambitions for future pilots—not an established substitute for clinical assessment, fitting or follow-up care.
