The capsule sets the intended drink format. In the United States, Nespresso lists five POP+ sizes: espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, coffee, and XL. Other markets may offer a different selection, so check your local product listing and manual.
How to use the Vertuo POP+
- Prepare the machine. Fill the water tank and connect the machine to power. For first use, or after a long idle period, follow the setup and rinse instructions on Nespresso’s POP+ assistance page or in the guide for your region.
- Insert a capsule. Open the brewing head as shown in the machine guide, place one Nespresso Vertuo capsule in the correct orientation, then close and lock the head. The POP+ uses Vertuo capsules; Original-line capsules are not substitutes.
- Set your cup. Put a cup beneath the outlet and adjust the cup support as needed. Choose a vessel large enough for the drink, crema, and any milk or ice you plan to add.
- Brew. Press the button and let the cycle finish before opening the head or removing the spent capsule.
- Dispose of the capsule. Follow current local Nespresso instructions for disposal or recycling; collection options vary by location.
Which capsule size should you choose?
The capsule determines the intended beverage format, and the machine reads capsule information to prepare that format. Nespresso’s US POP+ listing gives these nominal drink volumes:

These names and volumes come from Nespresso’s US POP+ product listing. They are nominal output sizes, not a guarantee that every capsule or regional machine configuration offers all five. The manual’s compatibility overview shows cup-volume examples of 40, 80, 150, 230, and 355 ml and marks some larger cup combinations as incompatible in its pictured system overview. Match the cup to the capsule and follow the local manual rather than assuming any cup fits every setup.

Does capsule size determine cup size or taste?
Capsule format is a useful starting point for choosing the amount and style of coffee: espresso formats are smaller, while coffee and XL formats are intended for longer pours. The listed volume is the beverage output, not the capacity of the mug you need. Leave headroom for crema and additions, particularly with milk or ice. Volume alone does not establish caffeine content or predict taste; choose by drink format and serving size rather than assuming a larger pour has more caffeine.

Can you change the pour volume?
Yes. The Vertuo POP manual describes volume programming from 20 ml to 535 ml, with the stored setting specific to the capsule type being adjusted. To program it, insert the capsule type you want to change and hold the button until the desired volume is reached. That changes the delivered volume for that capsule size; it does not change capsule compatibility or turn one format into another. If the machine’s output was changed and you want the standard setting back, use the reset instructions in the current official guide. For the intended recipe, use the matching capsule without reprogramming.
Why size options vary by country
The five-format table above is specific to Nespresso’s US listing. Nespresso’s UAE POP+ page describes formats from Ristretto through Mug, and other regional listings may include different combinations, such as cold coffee or Carafe. For the available capsules and exact instructions where you live, consult your market’s POP+ listing and assistance page. The UAE product page and Vertuo POP user manual are useful references, but a regional manual should take precedence for local configurations.
