Progressive Web Apps: How to Test Behavior and Screenshots

Test a PWA in layers: validate installation and offline behavior in target browsers, then use controlled screenshot baselines to catch visual regressions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test a progressive web app in layers: verify its manifest and installation behavior in each target browser, exercise service-worker and offline paths, and use repeatable screenshot comparisons to catch visual regressions. A screenshot is evidence of how a particular browser rendered a particular state—not proof that the app installs, works offline, or behaves correctly.

First, distinguish manifest screenshots from test screenshots

“PWA screenshots” can mean two different things:

  • Manifest screenshots are optional images declared in a web app manifest. They show common app-use scenarios to app stores and other distribution platforms that choose to display them. They do not change runtime behavior, and they are not a universal installability requirement. The MDN reference for the manifest screenshots member describes the optional metadata, including labels and the use of narrow or wide images for different layouts.
  • Test screenshots are images captured by a test runner or browser during development. Teams compare them with reference images to find changes in rendered UI.

Use manifest images to present the app in distribution listings where supported. Use test screenshots to detect visual changes. Neither substitutes for the other.

Build a layered PWA test plan

Automated visual checks are useful, but they cover only one part of PWA quality. Combine them with functional browser checks and, when device-specific behavior matters, checks on real target devices.

1. Choose the browsers and screens you support

Test the browsers your users are expected to use, rather than assuming one Chromium run represents every platform. Chrome’s cross-browser guidance names Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. Installation affordances, rendering, and service-worker behavior can differ, so check actual behavior in each supported browser.

Choose a compact set of meaningful states to cover, such as:

  • The first load and any important signed-in state.
  • Narrow and wide layouts that exercise responsive behavior.
  • The app’s offline or fallback screen.
  • Important states reached after cached data or a worker update, if those are part of the product.

2. Inspect the manifest and installation behavior

Inspect the manifest in the target browser and test the app’s installation experience there. Do not treat a manifest audit as a universal certification. Chrome’s manifest installability audit documentation lists checks used by that audit, including a name or short_name, 192×192 and 512×512 icons, a start_url, an allowed display value (fullscreen, standalone, or minimal-ui), and prefer_related_applications not set to true. The same page says a manifest is necessary but not sufficient for installability, and that other browsers have different installation criteria.

That Chrome page also labels PWA testing in Lighthouse deprecated. Treat its listed checks as documentation of that audit, not a current cross-browser pass/fail standard.

3. Exercise offline behavior and service-worker lifecycle

Check what a user sees when the network is unavailable, and distinguish an actual cached or fallback response from a page that only appeared to work because the network was available. In Chrome DevTools, use the Application panel to inspect the manifest, registered service workers, cache contents, and lifecycle. Use offline mode to exercise the offline path; bypass the worker to compare network behavior; update or stop the worker to expose assumptions about its state; and clear storage when you need to reproduce a clean installation. Chrome documents these controls in Debug Progressive Web Apps.

Check user-visible outcomes, not just worker registration: confirm what content appears, whether navigation works, and whether cached data is presented as expected. A screenshot can record the offline screen, but it cannot establish that the app’s offline data or interactions are correct.

For automated tests, account for service-worker-specific limitations. Playwright’s service-worker documentation discusses its automation behavior and notes that requests for updated service-worker main-script code cannot currently be routed. Do not assume ordinary page-network interception covers every worker-update scenario.

Chrome’s older offline audit page can provide background on the type of failure worth testing, but its Lighthouse PWA testing guidance is legacy; passing an old audit is not proof that a current app works offline.

4. Add visual regression checks for stable UI states

Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() captures a UI image and compares it with a reference image created on an initial run. Before comparison, the assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match. Playwright warns that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering, so create and compare baselines in a consistent environment. See Playwright visual comparisons and the PageAssertions API documentation.

For stable, useful diffs:

  • Fix the viewport, browser build, OS or container image, locale, timezone, fonts, and test data for the baseline job.
  • Wait for the app’s real ready state rather than relying on an arbitrary delay where a dependable readiness signal is available.
  • Mask or hide genuinely volatile regions—such as timestamps, rotating promotions, or third-party embeds—rather than masking broad areas that could conceal regressions.
  • Keep separate baselines for browser and platform combinations when their rendering differences are meaningful.
  • Review changed images and diffs before accepting a new baseline; do not update references blindly.
  • Keep functional assertions alongside screenshot assertions. A pixel comparison cannot prove that a button works or that offline data is correct.

Screenshot stylesheets and threshold options can help manage known visual variation, but they should not be used to hide unexplained changes. A threshold is a tolerance for image differences, not evidence that a changed screen is acceptable.

What screenshots can—and cannot—tell you

Check What it can establish What it cannot establish by itself
Screenshot comparison Whether a captured UI differs from a reference under the tested environment and state. Whether interactions work, installability requirements are met, offline behavior is correct, or the service-worker lifecycle is sound.
Manifest inspection Whether manifest metadata and assets are present for inspection in that browser. That every browser will offer installation or that the app is installable everywhere.
Offline and worker checks How the app behaves under the exercised network, cache, and worker conditions. That untested browsers, devices, routes, or lifecycle transitions behave the same way.

These checks complement one another. Use automation for repeatable regressions, browser tooling to inspect platform behavior, and real devices when desktop emulation cannot represent a device-specific condition.

Troubleshoot flaky or misleading results

  • The same UI produces different diffs between runs: Check that the baseline and comparison use the same browser build, OS image, fonts, viewport, locale, timezone, and headless mode. Wait for app readiness and isolate genuinely dynamic content.
  • A diff appears only in one browser: Treat it as a browser-specific result first. Reproduce it in that browser and maintain a separate baseline if the product intentionally supports a different rendering there; do not overwrite another browser’s reference.
  • An offline screenshot looks correct, but the app fails offline: Verify the interaction and data path with offline mode enabled. The image records appearance only; it does not prove the content came from cache or that navigation and controls work.
  • A worker update test misses a request: Check the automation tool’s service-worker limitations. Playwright documents that updated service-worker main-script requests cannot currently be routed, so ordinary page request interception may not exercise that update path.
  • An installability audit passes but installation is unavailable elsewhere: Check installation in each target browser. Chrome’s documented audit is not a universal standard, and the documentation notes that other browsers use different criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should manifest screenshots be generated by the test runner?

They can be captured by any suitable workflow, but their job is to illustrate app scenarios in supported distribution listings. Test-runner screenshots serve a separate regression-testing purpose.

Does passing a Lighthouse PWA audit certify my app?

No. The cited Chrome Lighthouse PWA audit pages are legacy guidance, and Chrome labels PWA testing in Lighthouse deprecated.
