Cypress Component Testing mounts an individual UI component in a real browser so you can check its rendered output, behavior, and appearance in isolation. It gives focused feedback while you build, but it does not prove that your routes, backend, or full user journeys work together. Use it alongside broader tests when those guarantees matter.
What Cypress Component Testing does
A component test renders one front-end component—such as a date picker, form section, menu, or design-system control—in a browser test environment. You provide its inputs, exercise interactions, inspect the rendered interface, and assert expected outcomes.

Cypress says component tests run in an actual browser rather than a simulated DOM such as jsdom. That makes browser behavior and rendered styles visible during the run. Cypress starts a development server to compile and serve component specs and support files using the project’s transforms; it does not visit the production or staging application as an end-to-end test does. - Mount: render the component with the props, data, or surrounding context it needs.
- Interact or inspect: query the rendered DOM and exercise relevant browser interactions.
- Assert: check that the expected content, state, or behavior is present.
Cypress recommends defining a reusable cy.mount() command in the component support file when tests share setup—for example, a provider wrapper or framework plugin. The exact mount adapter and configuration depend on the framework. See the mount API and React examples.

Why component testing matters
Components can have meaningful behavior without requiring the entire application to run. A focused test can check how a date picker handles a selected date, whether a form reveals a section when an input changes, or whether a reusable control responds as expected. Isolation makes failures easier to locate and avoids bringing every application dependency into each test.
The boundary is important: a passing component test does not establish that routing, persistence, server-side behavior, or a complete purchase flow works. Those depend on connections beyond the component itself. Component tests are one layer of coverage, not a replacement for testing integrated workflows.

Component, end-to-end, API, and accessibility tests
| Test type | What it exercises | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Component | An individual rendered UI component in a browser | Focused component behavior, state, and appearance |
| End-to-end | The application through browser-based user journeys | Checking that routes and application layers work together |
| API | HTTP endpoints directly | Checking endpoint behavior without exercising the full UI |
| Accessibility | Accessibility conformance and assistive-technology support | Finding accessibility issues that ordinary behavior assertions may not catch |
Choose based on the risk you need to catch. Component tests reduce scope and setup compared with tests that need the whole application and its supporting systems; end-to-end tests cover more layers but may need a test backend and more CI infrastructure. A balanced suite uses each type where it provides useful coverage. Cypress discusses these distinctions in its testing types overview.

Cypress’s performance guide says component tests are typically “5-10x faster than equivalent end-to-end tests” and run in “1-2 seconds each.” This is Cypress’s generalized vendor claim, accessed in 2026—not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for every project. Actual time depends on the component, setup, browser, and test environment. See the Cypress test performance guide.

Framework support and setup
Cypress’s current getting-started documentation lists official mounting libraries for React, Angular, Vue, and Svelte, along with framework- and bundler-specific compatibility details. Its examples cover React with Vite or Webpack, Next.js with Webpack, Vue with Vite or Webpack, Angular with Webpack, and Svelte integrations marked Alpha. Qwik and Lit integrations are identified as community-maintained. These details can change, so check Cypress’s current compatibility information for the versions in your project before adopting or configuring component testing.
The Cypress setup flow asks you to select Component Testing, detects the framework and bundler, checks dependencies, generates configuration, and then offers browser selection. For Next.js, Cypress recommends end-to-end tests for pages when you need coverage of server-side methods; component testing is suitable for individual components. Start with Cypress Component Testing: Getting Started, then consult the framework configuration guide and how to open the Cypress App. The React overview explains the React-specific approach.

Or skip the browser setup
Cypress is for testing component behavior in a browser; if your task is simply to capture a website screenshot, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
