1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteProgressive image rendering lets a browser show a rough, full-image preview before the entire image file has arrived, then refine it as more data downloads. Progressive JPEG and interlaced PNG can do this; neither makes the transfer itself shorter. Use them when earlier visual feedback matters and the encoded file’s size and decoding behavior work for your images and users.
How progressive image rendering works
An image can appear before its download finishes when its encoded data is organized so a browser can decode and display useful partial information as it arrives. Progressive rendering is therefore a property of the image file, not an HTML attribute or a special loading mode.

Progressive JPEG: the whole frame sharpens
A baseline JPEG generally appears from top to bottom as its data arrives. A progressive JPEG instead stores successive scans of the full image. Early scans produce a coarse preview across the frame; later scans add detail and improve quality. The result can look blurry at first and sharpen during the download. web.dev’s JPEG guidance describes this scan-based approach.
Interlaced PNG: a different data order
PNG can use interlacing to support progressive display. Its data is ordered so a viewer can render an increasingly detailed representation as the stream arrives. This is distinct from JPEG’s progressive scans, even though both can give the viewer an early preview. The W3C PNG specification describes PNG as streamable with a progressive display option.

Does progressive rendering make an image load faster?
Not in the sense of reducing the time needed to transfer the file. The browser still has to receive the image data. Progressive encoding can make loading feel more visibly underway because the viewer sees the composition before every byte arrives, but it does not eliminate network time or guarantee an earlier usable image.
There is no universal file-size winner. MDN notes progressive or interlaced images can be slightly larger than non-progressive versions, while web.dev says progressive JPEGs are often a little smaller except for the smallest images. The result depends on image content, encoder, settings, and dimensions. web.dev characterizes additional client decoding work as minor, but target devices and actual files still matter. Compare encodings at similar visual quality rather than assuming the progressive version is smaller or faster. See MDN’s progressive-image guidance.
When to use progressive JPEG, interlaced PNG, or another format
| Choice | Consider it when | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Progressive JPEG | The image is photographic, JPEG is an appropriate delivery format, and an early full-frame preview helps the viewing experience. | Compare file bytes at comparable quality, especially for small images; check perceived preview timing and decoding on representative devices. |
| Interlaced PNG | You need PNG’s lossless image handling or transparency and an early preview is useful. | Compare its size with non-interlaced PNG; progressive/interlaced encodings may be larger. |
| WebP, AVIF, or another suitable format | Compression, visual quality, support, transparency, or animation makes another format a better fit. | Progressive display is only one criterion. MDN says WebP and AVIF do not support progressive rendering; weigh their other format capabilities and the browsers you support. |
Format guidance and support can evolve. For current format considerations, consult MDN’s image format guide. Select based on the actual delivery requirements, not progressive display alone.

Progressive encoding is separate from responsive images and lazy loading
These controls solve different problems. Progressive encoding changes what partial data can look like. Responsive image selection can send a resource suited to the display size or pixel density. Lazy loading can defer off-screen images so they do not compete as early for network and rendering resources. Correct sizing and request timing address bytes sent and when they are requested; progressive encoding affects how an in-progress image is displayed.
Use responsive candidates when the same image is shown at different sizes, and consider lazy loading for images below the fold. Follow web.dev’s image-performance guidance for sizing and loading strategy. These choices can be combined with progressive encoding where the chosen format supports it; one is not a substitute for the others.
How to implement and evaluate progressive images
Encode the image in the desired form, then use it with ordinary image markup. There is no special progressive-image HTML element. For example, once photo-progressive.jpg has been encoded as progressive JPEG, it can be displayed normally:

MDN notes that converted progressive images work in a normal <img>; the markup does not turn a baseline image progressive. web.dev describes Squoosh as a web-based image tool with an advanced progressive-JPEG option, and MDN names MozJPEG as an encoder option. For interlaced PNG, use an encoder or image tool that supports PNG interlacing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Compare real outputs, not just the format label
- Choose representative images. Include the image types and dimensions your site actually serves, including small images where progressive JPEG may not have the same size behavior as larger photographs.
- Encode alternatives at comparable visual quality. Compare baseline and progressive JPEG, or non-interlaced and interlaced PNG, without treating a quality-setting number from one encoder as equivalent to another.
- Record file size and preview behavior. Check total bytes as well as when a useful-looking preview appears under the network conditions relevant to your audience.
- Check target devices and formats. Include decoding behavior, browser support, transparency or animation needs, and the image’s actual display size in the decision.
- Keep loading strategy separate. Test responsive sizing and below-the-fold lazy loading as their own changes so you can tell which part affects transfer and request timing.
These comparisons reflect the variables identified in the MDN guidance, web.dev’s JPEG overview, and the MDN format guide; there is no single encoding that wins for every image and audience.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is progressive rendering controlled by an HTML attribute?
No. The image must already be encoded for progressive display; ordinary <img> markup can display it.
Does WebP support progressive display?
No. MDN says WebP does not support progressive display, so choose it for its other format benefits when those matter more.
Can I combine progressive encoding with lazy loading?
Yes. They affect different parts of image delivery: progressive encoding shapes partial display, while lazy loading defers when an off-screen image is requested.
