How to Fix Blurry Images on Your Website

Diagnose blurry website images by checking the original file, displayed dimensions, responsive variants, temporary previews, theme cropping, and compression.

If an image looks blurry on your website, first find out whether the original file is already soft, the page is enlarging a file that is too small, or the browser is downloading a small responsive image variant. Then check whether the blur is only a temporary preview, whether the theme is cropping the image, and whether compression or platform delivery is affecting it. Changing formats or sharpening cannot restore detail that is missing from the source.

1. Check the original image against its displayed size

Open the original file at its native size, then compare its pixel dimensions with the width and height it occupies on the page. If the source is already blurry, replace it with a clearer, higher-resolution original. If it looks sharp at native size but soft on the site, the page may be enlarging it or using a smaller thumbnail or variant.

  • WordPress block: Select the Image block and check its resolution setting. If the image is being served at a smaller size, try a larger option such as Full Size.
  • Other site builders or themes: Check the image or section settings for a thumbnail, crop, or fixed image size.
  • Do not rely on upscaling: WordPress.com Support explains, “You can size down a high-quality image file, but you can’t size up a low-quality image file with good results.”

There is no universal pixel dimension that suits every image: the right source size depends on the rendered layout and display density. Shopify recommends uploads up to 5000 × 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels for its platform, subject to its upload restrictions; treat that as Shopify-specific guidance, not a rule for all websites.

2. Check which responsive image the browser downloads

A page can offer several image files so the browser can choose one for the viewport and display density. The HTML attributes srcset and sizes influence that choice. If the selected resource is too small for the space where it appears, the image can look pixelated or soft.

  1. Open the affected page at the screen size where the image looks blurry.
  2. In the browser’s developer tools, inspect the image element. Check its src, srcset, and sizes attributes.
  3. Use the Network panel to identify the image resource actually fetched. Compare its dimensions with the rendered image area and test again at a different viewport width.
  4. If the chosen candidate is too small, correct the available candidates or the expected rendered width described by sizes. Base the value on the actual layout; a copied example may not fit your theme.

WordPress has generated responsive image attributes using srcset and sizes since WordPress 4.4. Its developer documentation notes that existing attributes in content HTML are left unchanged, so manually authored markup or theme output may need inspection. Shopify’s developer guide recommends its Liquid image_tag filter with appropriate widths and an accurate sizes value. In either case, verify the fetched resource rather than assuming the browser chose the intended file.

3. Determine whether the blur is temporary

Wait for the page and image to finish loading. Some Shopify themes initially show a smaller preview while the full-resolution image loads, which can look slightly blurry for a short time. If it becomes sharp, the initial softness may be an intentional loading effect. If it stays blurry, continue checking the source and the downloaded variant. Compare on a different network connection too; WordPress.com Support recommends checking the connection when images appear to load at lower quality. This preview behavior is not established for every platform or CDN.

4. Separate image softness from cropping

If part of the image is cut off or the composition looks wrong, the issue may be the section’s aspect ratio rather than blur. A theme can crop an image to fill a banner, slideshow, or card with a fixed shape. Try a source image with a more suitable aspect ratio, adjust the focal point if the theme offers one, or use a different section. These changes can improve framing, but do not add resolution or repair a soft image. Available controls vary by theme and theme version.

5. Review format and compression

Choose a format for the image type, then inspect the result at its intended display size. Shopify recommends JPEG for photographs and PNG for flat-color graphics or images that need transparency. Shopify may deliver WebP or AVIF where supported. WordPress documentation describes the trade-off between file size and image quality: compression can remove detail, and excessive compression can make an image look soft.

  • For a photograph, compare a suitable JPEG or another format your platform supports at a reasonable quality setting.
  • For a logo, icon, flat-color illustration, or transparent graphic, use an appropriate format such as PNG where it fits the platform and asset.
  • Do not convert everything to PNG or maximize quality blindly. A format change cannot recreate detail absent from the source, and larger files can affect loading.

6. Isolate platform settings, theme code, and delivery

WordPress.com

After checking the source and block resolution, test whether the problem changes with the network connection. WordPress.com’s troubleshooting guide also suggests toggling Jetpack CDN where the site’s plan supports it, and investigating theme changes or plugin conflicts. Jetpack CDN is not present on every WordPress installation, so only follow that branch if your site uses it.

Shopify

Check the section settings, theme documentation, and the actual image resource selected at the affected viewport. If custom theme code changed image markup or sizing, inspect those changes as well. Shopify notes that theme controls depend on the theme and version; custom work beyond the theme editor may require a Shopify Partner.

7. Use a browser screenshot to document the issue

To compare the same page before and after a change, capture it at the affected viewport and inspect the browser’s Network panel for the image that loaded. A screenshot can show how the page looks, but it does not replace checking the source file or fetched image dimensions. Common troubleshooting outcomes

What you see Likely cause What to check
Blurry at every size, including the original The source file is soft or low quality Replace it with a clearer original; do not expect upscaling to restore detail.
Sharp in the source, blurry only on the page The page enlarges a small file or the browser selects a small variant Compare source dimensions with rendered size; inspect the fetched resource and responsive attributes.
Blurry only while the page first loads A platform-specific low-resolution preview may be displayed temporarily Wait for loading to finish and see whether the image sharpens; if not, keep diagnosing the source and variant.
Image is cut off but detail looks sharp Section aspect ratio or theme crop Adjust the focal point, use a better-fitting source shape, or choose another section.
Image remains soft after source and layout checks Compression, platform delivery, or custom theme/plugin behavior Review quality settings and the actual downloaded file; on WordPress.com, check applicable CDN, theme, and plugin branches.

Performance and reliability notes

Use a source file large enough for its intended display without assuming that the largest possible file is always best. Responsive candidates let the browser choose among sizes, while accurate sizes guidance helps it make a suitable selection. Excessive compression can degrade detail; unnecessarily large assets can increase download size. Shopify’s developer documentation also discusses setting image width and height to reserve layout space and prevent layout shift; that improves layout stability, but does not itself sharpen an image.
