Programmable Storage Drive: What It Is and How It Works

A programmable storage drive adds supported compute operations near stored data. Learn how computational storage differs from an SSD and what its capabilities depend on.

A programmable storage drive is a storage device with compute resources and software interfaces that let supported operations run near the data. The industry term for this approach is computational storage. Unlike a conventional SSD, it can do more than store and retrieve files—but it is not a general-purpose computer, and what it can process depends on its hardware and software support.

What does “programmable storage drive” mean?

“Programmable storage drive” is a plain-language description, not a separate standards category established by the sources cited here. The relevant industry term is computational storage: adding computation to the normal storage features of a device or system. The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) says these solutions typically target applications whose growing processing demands are outpacing traditional compute-server architectures. SNIA’s overview of computational storage was marked updated February 2026.

Put simply, the device combines persistent data storage with compute capability. The “programmable” part means that software can use supported functions on or near the storage device; it does not mean that any application can run on any drive. A 2022 SNIA event presentation used the shorthand “Persistent data storage + Computation.” That captures the basic idea, but not the details of a device’s supported operations or interfaces.

How is it different from a conventional SSD?

A conventional SSD is non-volatile storage: it retains data without power and handles storage operations through its controller. The presence of firmware or logic in an ordinary SSD controller does not by itself make the drive capable of running a user’s workload. Computational storage adds processing functionality and a way for software to use it. SNIA’s explanation of SSDs provides the storage baseline.

Conventional SSD Computational-storage drive
Stores and retrieves data for the host. Stores and retrieves data, and can perform particular supported operations near the data.
Processing generally happens on the host, which may need to receive data from storage. Some processing can happen on the device or within the storage system, potentially reducing unnecessary data movement.
Controller firmware supports the drive’s storage functions; that does not imply general workload execution. Compute resources and software interfaces determine which additional operations applications can use.

Computational storage does not eliminate the host CPU or make every workload faster. The benefit depends on whether the operation can run efficiently on the device, whether the application can invoke it, and how the system is integrated.

Why put compute near storage?

In a traditional arrangement, data moves from storage to host compute for processing. When a workload must repeatedly move large volumes of data, that movement can add overhead and demand on host resources. Processing some operations near the data can reduce transfers through the host CPU and address workloads that strain traditional server architectures.

This is a workload-dependent architectural goal, not a guarantee of better performance. An operation that is unsuitable for the device, or a system without compatible software and integration, may see little benefit. SNIA identifies AI, big data, content delivery, databases, and machine learning among the areas relevant to computational-storage use cases.

This is one vendor’s architecture and capability list, not a definition of every computational-storage drive. An FPGA is not required by the category, and another implementation may expose different hardware, operations, and programming interfaces. Samsung describes SmartSSD as a platform for developers to create accelerators; it should not be mistaken for an ordinary consumer SSD upgrade.

How does programming and software support work?

Hardware alone is not enough: applications need a supported way to discover and use the device’s capabilities. SNIA’s Computational Storage Architecture and Programming Model describes recommended behavior for supporting hardware and software. SNIA lists version 1.2 as published April 21, 2026.

SNIA’s standards and software portfolio describes the Computational Storage API as an application-to-device interface, with standardized mapping for APIs as well as device-specific implementations. That standards work does not establish universal compatibility. Before choosing a drive or designing an application around one, check which APIs, drivers, runtimes, frameworks, and operations the particular system supports.

Reported result Setup and qualification
2.8× faster SQL query execution on Parquet data Reported by Samsung Semiconductor; the brief does not state the year or provide enough context here to treat the result as typical.
87% lower CPU utilization Samsung reports using three SmartSSD drives while maintaining the same video-transcoding frame rate; the brief does not state the year.
72 GB/s read of LZ4-compressed data Samsung reports 24 SmartSSD drives operating in parallel and decompressing at line rate; this is a multi-drive setup, not a single-drive speed. The brief does not state the year.

In a separate July 21, 2022 announcement about its second-generation SmartSSD, Samsung reported processing time reduced by over 50%, energy consumption reduced by up to 70%, and CPU utilization reduced by up to 97% against conventional SSD drives. Those are also Samsung’s claims, and the cited announcement does not make them universal results for other drives or workloads. Samsung’s announcement provides the attribution and comparison.

How should you evaluate a real implementation?

For an engineering decision, start with the operation and system—not a headline speed figure. Compare implementations against the workload and environment in which they will actually run.

  • Workload fit: Confirm that the target operation is supported and resembles the workload behind any cited demonstration.
  • Compute and programmability: Identify the processing resources and the functions developers can deploy. Do not assume every drive uses an FPGA or permits arbitrary code.
  • Programming model: Check how applications discover and invoke device capabilities, and whether the interface is standardized, vendor-specific, or both.
  • Host integration: Verify compatibility with the intended system, drivers, runtime, frameworks, and application.
  • Measured results: Test with representative data and operations. Record throughput, latency, CPU utilization, energy use, and scaling under disclosed conditions.

SSD performance itself varies with workload and test conditions, including how full a drive is and its caching behavior. SNIA’s guidance on what an SSD is and how performance is characterized is a useful reminder not to treat one headline speed as a complete comparison. Distinguish throughput, IOPS, latency, quality of service, queue depth, and the conditions used for each measurement.
