λλ is a research programming language for silicon-photonic switches. It uses a linear type system to catch programs that violate optical constraints during compilation, then maps valid programs onto switch hardware with signal loss as an optimization concern. Cornell’s seminar abstract also reports a synthesizer that can generate λλ programs from higher-level specifications.
What λλ does
Configuring a photonic switch means translating desired behavior into settings for optical components while respecting the physical constraints of light. λλ aims to move some of that work into the programming and compilation process rather than leaving every constraint to device-specific configuration.

Cornell’s Bowers Department of Computer Science describes λλ as a “programming language for silicon photonics” and says its linear type system encodes optical physical constraints. 1. Check physical constraints as the program is compiled
The linear type system represents constraints that an optical program must satisfy. If a program describes an unrealizable configuration, the compiler is intended to reject it before it reaches the hardware.

2. Lower valid programs into a graph
After type checking, the compiler translates a valid program into a graph-based intermediate representation. This gives the compiler a structured form to use when mapping the requested behavior onto a switch.
3. Embed the graph onto a target
The compiler solves a constrained embedding problem to map the graph onto a photonic-switch target. Cornell says the mapping treats signal loss as something to minimize. The accessible abstract does not specify the embedding algorithm, cost function, or measured loss.

4. Generate programs from higher-level specifications
A synthesizer is reported to generate λλ programs from high-level specifications. For programs produced this way, users need not describe the behavior directly in terms of optical primitives. The abstract does not detail the specification format or how synthesis is performed.

Cornell also reports that the compiler scales to silicon-photonic switches with over 100,000 programmable elements and handles switch programs with 128 input-output pairs. These are reported results, not guarantees for every switch or program. What the results do—and do not—establish
The workflow described by Cornell offers a specific contrast with configuring switch behavior directly around hardware details: optical constraints are checked by the type system, valid programs are mapped through a graph representation, and signal loss is part of the mapping objective. The abstract does not establish that this approach is faster, more reliable, or lower-loss than another method.

Nor does the available description establish λλ as a general-purpose photonic integrated-circuit layout system, a foundry tape-out flow, a simulation environment, or an industry-standard interface. It is described as a language and compiler for programming silicon-photonic switches.

Cornell’s seminar listing identifies Vaibhav Mehta, a Cornell Bowers Ph.D. student, as the speaker for an August 28, 2026 talk. It links to an ACM paper with DOI 10.1145/3789240.3829151, but the seminar abstract alone does not answer several implementation and evaluation questions. Readers seeking those details would need the full paper or project materials.

- The embedding solver and its optimization cost function
- The experimental setup, hardware configuration, and comparison baseline
- Runtime and measured signal-loss results
- Whether λλ has a public software release or evidence of broader adoption
Without those details, λλ is best understood as a research approach to programming photonic switches—not as a ready-to-use product or a demonstrated industry standard.
