A production voice agent is a complete realtime system, not just a language model with speech added. It combines audio capture and transport, speech processing, turn-taking, interruption recovery, application tools and state, and evaluation of what callers actually hear. Start by choosing between integrated speech-to-speech and a staged streaming pipeline; then select a transport and design the workflow around its control and operational responsibilities.
What a production voice-agent architecture contains
A typical system connects a browser, mobile app, or telephone caller to a realtime speech model or a streaming chain of recognition, language-model and speech-synthesis services. An application backend handles credentials, tools, business rules and durable state. Monitoring and evaluation track whether the system completes tasks reliably and responds in a useful amount of time.

These are architectural choices, not mutually exclusive product categories. For example, a phone call can enter through a SIP provider while the application connects to a model over WebSocket. A browser can use WebRTC for audio while a server handles tools and business state. The provider’s supported connection paths determine which combinations are available.

| Architecture | Good fit | Trade-offs and responsibilities |
|---|---|---|
| Native speech-to-speech realtime session | Conversational experiences where natural turn-taking, direct audio context and low-latency interaction matter. | The provider can manage much of the speech and turn-event flow, but the application has less independent control over intermediate transcript, reasoning and voice stages. It still needs permissioned tools, session handling, interruption tests and evaluation. |
| Cascaded streaming pipeline: speech recognition → language model and tools → speech synthesis | Workflows that need to inspect or transform intermediate text, select components independently, or build on existing text-based reasoning. | The application must orchestrate every stage and streaming handoff. A fast individual model does not guarantee a fast conversation; measure the delay until the caller hears a useful response. |
OpenAI’s Voice agents documentation describes both native speech-to-speech and chained voice-agent designs. The practical distinction is how much control the team needs over intermediate text and components versus how much of the audio flow it wants a provider to manage.

Select a transport for the endpoint
| Transport | Typical role | What the application must account for |
|---|---|---|
| WebRTC | Realtime audio between a browser or mobile client and a service, where the chosen provider supports it. | Connectivity setup, NAT traversal, relay or TURN choices, network quality, session ownership and client playback. WebRTC provides media connectivity mechanisms, but production behavior still depends on the route, packet loss and relay configuration. |
| WebSocket | A persistent connection for a server-owned audio loop, custom capture and playback, or direct access to provider events. | The application manages audio buffers and may need to stop playback and synchronize conversation history itself after an interruption. |
| SIP | Connecting public phone numbers or existing calling systems through telephony infrastructure. | A SIP trunking provider and call lifecycle integration are required. Correlate the carrier’s call or room identifier with the model session ID. |
OpenAI’s Agents SDK guidance maps browser speech-to-speech to WebRTC, server-side or custom audio loops to WebSocket, and telephony bridges to SIP. It also documents provider-specific extensions for Twilio and Cloudflare. AWS announced on March 20, 2026 that Bedrock AgentCore Runtime had added WebRTC alongside WebSocket; that announcement described TURN relay options and availability in 14 AWS regions at the time. Region support can change, so confirm it for the deployment region before launch.
Design the live conversation flow
Audio capture and model input
Browser and mobile applications capture microphone audio; phone deployments receive audio through the telephony path. The selected speech model or recognition service must receive the audio in a supported format and cadence. For example, Google’s Gemini Live capabilities documentation specifies raw 16-bit PCM at 16 kHz for native audio input and PCM at 24 kHz for output. Treat these as provider-specific requirements, not universal voice-agent formats.

Turn detection and endpointing
Voice activity detection (VAD) estimates when speech starts and stops. Endpointing decides whether a pause means the caller has finished a turn. Automatic turn handling reduces application work, while application-managed turns can be useful for push-to-talk, moderation, validation or workflows that need checks before generating a response. Test pauses, hesitations and short acknowledgements: a system that mistakes a thinking pause for turn completion can respond too early.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Interruption and playback state
Barge-in is both a detection problem and a state-management problem. When a caller starts speaking over generated audio, the system must stop outgoing playback, cancel or truncate the response as appropriate, and record only the portion that was actually played. Otherwise, the next response may assume the caller heard information that never reached them. The exact responsibility varies by transport: lower-level WebSocket loops may need explicit client and conversation-history synchronization, while provider-managed paths may handle more of the event flow.

Tools and application state
Keep business permissions and consequential operations in the application backend. The model can request an action, but the backend should validate the request, apply authorization and execute it. Make spoken confirmations reflect verified results: a generated “Your appointment is booked” is not proof that the booking operation succeeded. Preserve the state needed to resume or audit a task. OpenAI’s agent guidance identifies tools, durable state, handoffs, guardrails and observability as relevant building blocks even when the interaction is spoken.
Protect identity, credentials and call control
- Keep ordinary long-lived API keys on the server; do not expose them in browser code.
- If a client connects directly to a provider, use a supported short-lived or ephemeral credential flow. Google’s Live API production guidance calls for ephemeral tokens for client-to-server access.
- For SIP integrations, verify webhook authenticity and retain a reliable mapping between the carrier call ID and model session ID.
- Keep authorization decisions, tool permissions and durable business records under deliberate application control rather than treating the model session as the system of record.
Plan for session duration and reconnection
Long-lived audio sessions need a deliberate reconnect and graceful-termination path. Google’s Live API documentation describes session resumption and context compression; its session-management guidance explains approaches for continuity when connections end. The capabilities guide currently labels the Live API as preview and states limits of 15 minutes for audio-only sessions and 2 minutes for audio-plus-video sessions without session-management techniques. These limits are provider-specific and can change; verify the current API limits and resumption behavior for the exact model and deployment before release.

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
For capacity planning, distinguish a model-session limit from the length of a customer task. A workflow may need to preserve application state, reconnect, and continue without asking the caller to repeat everything. Test the full path through connection loss, resumption, and a tool operation in progress rather than checking only whether a socket can reconnect.

Measure the end-to-end experience, not only model response time. OpenAI’s Voice agents guidance recommends tracking time to a useful spoken answer, backend time separately, and median and 95th-percentile latency across like-for-like calls. Useful timestamps include backend request start, first useful result, tool start and end, audio arrival, and client playback. Together, they help isolate delays in connection setup, model work, tools, buffering or playback.

Use a repeatable progression: first test controlled synthetic speech for single-turn behavior, then replay human recordings to expose microphone and acoustic variability, and finally run multi-turn conversations with clarification, changed requirements, interruptions and simultaneous backend work. Hold the caller, recording, model, prompt, transport and audio cadence constant when comparing results. Automated checks can catch regressions, but human listening is still needed to judge whether the spoken response sounds clear and appropriately paced.
Compare options against the real workload
No architecture is a universal winner. Compare the actual candidate services and connection paths on the dimensions that affect your callers and operations:
- How much control you need over intermediate transcripts, reasoning and speech components.
- End-to-end audible latency under representative network and audio conditions.
- Turn-boundary and interruption behavior, including whether the application must synchronize playback state.
- Tool calling, permissions, business-state integration and auditability.
- Browser or mobile support versus phone and SIP support.
- Session duration, reconnection behavior, regional availability and operational ownership.
- Repeatable observability and evaluation, alongside total service and infrastructure cost.
Provider documentation establishes available mechanisms and constraints, not comparative performance for your workload. Measure the selected path with representative callers and tasks before making a production choice, and recheck volatile model names, preview status, regional support and API limits during implementation.
