Private Wi-Fi Address vs. Device MAC Address: What’s the Difference?

A hardware Wi-Fi MAC is the device-level address; a private or randomized MAC is the network-specific address your phone presents over Wi-Fi. Here’s how to find the right one.

Your device’s hardware Wi-Fi MAC address identifies its Wi-Fi interface; its private or randomized Wi-Fi address is the value it presents to a particular network. That network-specific value can differ from the hardware address and is intended to make it harder to link your device’s activity across different Wi-Fi networks.

Why does a phone show two Wi-Fi MAC addresses?

A MAC address is an identifier used for communication on a local network. Your phone has a hardware Wi-Fi MAC address, while its private or randomized Wi-Fi address is the address it uses when communicating with a Wi-Fi network. The labels vary by platform: Apple calls the network-specific value a “private Wi-Fi address”; Android commonly calls it a “randomized MAC address.”

The network-specific address is designed to reduce linkability: if a device used the same hardware MAC everywhere, network operators and other observers could more easily relate its presence across networks and over time. Apple describes private addresses as a way to improve privacy across Wi-Fi networks (Apple Support: Use private Wi-Fi addresses on Apple devices).

This setting changes the MAC address used on Wi-Fi, not your IP address. It also does not make all of your online activity anonymous; websites and services can still identify or associate activity through other means.

Hardware MAC vs. private or randomized MAC

Address What it is Where it is used
Hardware Wi-Fi MAC The Wi-Fi interface’s device-level address. It is the underlying address; Apple’s Off mode uses it on that network.
Private or randomized Wi-Fi MAC A different address used for a Wi-Fi network, rather than exposing the hardware address there. It is used on the selected network. Depending on platform and setting, it may stay stable for that network or rotate.

These values identify a Wi-Fi interface at the local-network level; neither is the device’s internet-facing IP address.

Which MAC address should you give a school, office, or router?

Usually, provide the MAC address the network will actually see: the private or randomized address for that specific Wi-Fi network. If a school, office, or router administrator registers devices by MAC address, give them that network-specific value, not the hardware address shown in the general device-information screen. Otherwise the registered address may not match the one presented when you connect.

Find the address while viewing that network’s settings, and check with the administrator if they specify which value or require a particular address mode. If you change the private-address setting after registration, the address presented to the network may change or stop matching the registered entry.

How Apple’s private Wi-Fi address modes work

On supported versions—iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia 15, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2 or later—Apple offers three modes for a Wi-Fi network: Off, Fixed, and Rotating. Apple says each network gets a different private address by default, used for that network only. The default mode depends on network security: Fixed for new WPA2-or-stronger networks and Rotating for weak or unprotected networks (Apple Support: Use private Wi-Fi addresses on Apple devices).

Mode Address used on that network Behavior
Off Hardware Wi-Fi MAC Private addressing is disabled for that network.
Fixed Private Wi-Fi address Stays stable for that network.
Rotating Private Wi-Fi address Changes every two weeks, according to Apple.

For the exact setting location, Apple’s instructions are in Use private Wi-Fi addresses on Apple devices; the path and displayed controls can depend on the device and operating-system version. Apple recommends leaving private addresses enabled on networks and with software that support them.

How to find the hardware and network-specific address on Android

Google’s general instructions distinguish the Wi-Fi MAC shown in About phone from the randomized MAC shown for a selected network. Android 10 and later have another MAC address, Google notes (Google Android Help: Manage advanced network settings on your Android phone).

Why might a Wi-Fi MAC address change?

A network-specific address can differ from the hardware address because private or randomized addressing is active. On Apple devices using Rotating mode, the private address changes every two weeks. A network administrator may also manage address behavior on an organization-enrolled device. Android’s general guidance establishes where to see the randomized address, but does not establish one default behavior for every manufacturer.

Apple’s broader Wi-Fi security guidance also describes MAC randomization during Wi-Fi scans when a device is not associated with a network. Scan privacy is separate from the per-network private-address setting described above; Apple notes qualifications around scan state and attempts to connect to preferred networks (Apple Platform Security: Wi-Fi privacy, dated December 19, 2024).

What to do if private addressing causes a connection problem

Do not turn off private addressing as the first fix. Apple recommends updating the device’s software and trying again. If the issue continues, the network’s configuration or security may need updating; for an enrolled work or school device, an administrator may control the setting through a managed network profile (Apple Support: Use private Wi-Fi addresses on Apple devices).

  • Install available operating-system updates, then reconnect.
  • If the device is managed by an organization, ask its administrator whether the network profile controls private addressing.
  • If the network uses MAC-based registration or access control, confirm that it has the current network-specific address.
  • Only change the mode if the network administrator or a specific compatibility issue calls for it; changing it can affect which address the network recognizes.
