Can You Change or Spoof a MAC Address? What to Know Before You Do

You can change or randomize a MAC address, but platform behavior varies. Learn what Apple and Android do by default, how to find the settings, and why a different address does not make you anonymous or secure a network.

Yes. A device can present a different MAC address, and modern phones and computers may do this automatically through Wi-Fi privacy settings. Spoofing means presenting a different address; randomization is the operating system’s built-in way of using a private address. Either can change how a network recognizes your device, but neither makes you anonymous or replaces Wi-Fi security.

What changing or spoofing a MAC address means

A MAC address is an identifier used by a device’s network interface on a local network. Changing or spoofing it means presenting a different address instead of the interface’s usual hardware address. Wi-Fi MAC randomization is related, but it is typically an operating-system privacy feature that selects a private address according to platform rules rather than a manual change.

On current phones, you may already be using a private or randomized address without changing anything yourself. The exact behavior and available controls depend on the operating system, version, device, and network.

How Apple devices handle private Wi-Fi addresses

Apple devices use a different private Wi-Fi address for each network by default. On iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia 15, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2 or later, supported devices offer Off, Fixed, and Rotating modes. Apple documents these behaviors on its Private Wi-Fi addresses support page.

Setting What it does Apple’s default behavior
Off Uses the device’s hardware MAC address. Not the default described for these networks.
Fixed Uses a private address that does not rotate. Default for a new network secured with WPA2 or stronger.
Rotating Changes the private address every two weeks. Default for a weakly secured or open network.

To check the setting on a supported iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro, open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the network’s details, then tap Private Wi-Fi Address. On a Mac running macOS Sequoia 15 or later, open System Settings > Wi-Fi, open the network’s details, and use the setting next to Private Wi-Fi Address. Apple Watch has corresponding Wi-Fi settings; the exact controls vary by device and software version. A school- or employer-managed device may restrict the option, in which case its administrator controls availability.

The private address is specific to a Wi-Fi network. Resetting network settings or erasing the device means the next connection uses a different private address. On newer systems, forgetting a network ordinarily forgets its private address too, subject to Apple’s 24-hour condition.

How Android handles randomized MAC addresses

Android 10 and later randomize MAC addresses by default. On supported devices, you can enable or disable randomization for an individual Wi-Fi network from that network’s details. The manufacturer’s interface can vary, so the precise labels and path differ by phone. Google’s Android documentation explains the feature and its controls at Wi-Fi MAC randomization.

Android’s default is persistent randomization: the address is associated with a network profile, using information such as the network name (SSID) and security type. It generally remains associated with that profile rather than changing on every connection. Android 12 and later use non-persistent randomization only in limited situations. The normal network settings control turns randomization on or off; it does not let you choose between persistent and non-persistent modes.

Windows and other devices

Windows includes random hardware address controls on supported versions and adapters, but availability and menu paths vary. Start with Microsoft’s current guide, Connect to a Wi-Fi network in Windows, and check the instructions for your Windows version. Do not assume every PC or wireless adapter exposes the same setting.

What may happen after an address changes

Some networks use a device’s MAC address to recognize it or apply network behavior. Android notes that a persistent address can help a network remember a device, avoid showing a login screen repeatedly, or apply parental controls. If the address changes, the network may see the device as new, and those behaviors may be affected.

Does changing a MAC address make you anonymous?

No. Randomization can make a stable Wi-Fi identifier less useful for tracking, but it does not stop all forms of identification or correlation. The Internet Engineering Task Force’s RFC 9724 notes that identifiers such as DHCP client identifiers can still be correlated and that privacy measures should not operate at only one protocol layer. A changed MAC address is not a guarantee that a network cannot recognize a device, and it is not a substitute for a VPN or other privacy protections.

Is MAC filtering a security measure?

No. MAC filtering is not robust authentication. Apple warns that MAC addresses can be copied, spoofed, or changed, and that filtering does not prevent observers from monitoring or intercepting network traffic. Its router and access point security guidance recommends disabling MAC filtering as a security measure and using appropriate Wi-Fi security settings instead. Network owners should also keep router firmware current and use the router maker’s documentation for configuration.

What to check before changing the setting

  • Identify the network: Check whether it is a home network, workplace or school network, or one that uses a login portal or device registration.
  • Check your platform: Apple, Android, and Windows expose different controls; some devices or administrators may restrict them.
  • Consider recognition needs: If the network relies on a stable address for remembered access or controls, changing it may alter the experience.
  • Use real security settings: Do not depend on MAC filtering to protect a network; configure appropriate Wi-Fi security and keep router firmware current.
