Private Internet Access Review: Privacy, Streaming, Torrenting, and Pricing

PIA stands out for torrenting support and configurable privacy features, but mixed kill-switch findings, streaming limitations, US jurisdiction, and renewal costs make it worth comparing carefully.

Private Internet Access (PIA) is a paid VPN with privacy-focused features, broad device coverage, and strong support for torrenting—but it is not an automatic fit for every user. Its audit history is worth examining, while its US jurisdiction, mixed independent kill-switch findings, less reliable international streaming results, and renewal terms deserve attention before you subscribe.

Is Private Internet Access worth it?

PIA is worth considering if you want a configurable VPN, support for peer-to-peer traffic, and a subscription the company advertises for unlimited simultaneous devices. It is a less compelling choice if your priority is dependable access to international streaming catalogs or a simple, independently verified assurance that the kill switch behaves identically in every failure condition.

The evidence is mixed in specific ways rather than uniformly positive or negative: PIA describes a third independent review of its VPN infrastructure, reviewers report different kill-switch outcomes, and streaming and speed assessments vary by publication and test. Those distinctions matter more than a blanket “safe” or “best” label.

Does PIA keep logs, and is it safe?

PIA says it does not retain browsing data and publishes information about court requests and its no-logs position on its no-logs page. The company also says Deloitte Audit Romania completed a third independent review under ISAE 3000 (Revised). According to PIA, the engagement covered VPN configurations, management systems, dedicated IP technology, and operational practices including management and incident response. PIA identifies earlier reviews in 2022 and 2024 and says the full report is available. Read the audit announcement for the company’s account of the scope.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

This is evidence about the systems and practices in the stated review scope, not a guarantee that every security property has been tested or that every possible threat is addressed. PIA is headquartered in Denver, Colorado, so US legal process can apply. For a privacy decision, weigh that jurisdiction alongside what data the company says it holds, its published policy, and the audit scope; an audit does not remove the jurisdictional question.

Does PIA have a kill switch?

PIA offers a kill switch, but independent reviews disagree about its behavior under different conditions. Tom’s Guide says the kill switch worked in its testing. RTINGS reports no IP or DNS leaks in its tests, but detected traffic leakage after a system reboot. These are findings from those publishers’ reviews, not tests of every PIA app, operating system, or configuration.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

If you rely on a kill switch, check its behavior on the device and operating system you actually use. Test after network loss, sleep and wake, app restart, and system reboot; the reboot condition matters because RTINGS specifically reports leakage in that situation. See the respective reports from Tom’s Guide and RTINGS for their methods and findings.

How well does PIA work for streaming?

Streaming access is not guaranteed. Top10VPN reports that PIA has more difficulty unblocking international services than US platforms, while results can change with the server, location, platform, and test date. Do not assume that a particular catalog will work just because a VPN connection is available. If access to a specific service or country’s catalog is essential, check current, region-specific results and the service’s terms before buying. Top10VPN’s assessment is available in its PIA review.

Is PIA good for torrenting?

Independent reviewers rate PIA favorably for torrenting. Top10VPN highlights port forwarding, and RTINGS also gives its torrenting support a positive assessment. Peer-to-peer support does not authorize copyright infringement: use it only for lawful sharing, and check the rules that apply to your content and location.

What does PIA cost, and how much is renewal?

PIA’s US purchase page displayed the following USD prices when checked on October 4, 2026. Prices and offers can change; confirm the storefront, taxes, offer, and renewal amount at checkout. PIA says its discounts are calculated against a current monthly service price of $11.95.

PIA apps are not the only possible setup: a VPN-compatible router can cover devices connected through that router, but it is optional. Tom’s Guide notes router availability, while the reviewed sources do not establish a current supported-router model and firmware list. Verify PIA’s setup instructions against the exact router model and firmware before purchasing hardware.

Who should choose PIA?

  • Consider PIA if torrenting support, configurable VPN features, and coverage for many devices are central to your decision, and you are comfortable assessing the provider’s stated audit scope and US jurisdiction.
  • Compare alternatives if reliable access to international streaming services, consistent behavior after reboot, or independently measured speed and latency are essential. Compare providers using tests that disclose the server locations, platforms, dates, and failure conditions—not just broad claims.
  • Check the full cost if you are considering a long-term offer: compare the upfront first-term charge with the amount and interval shown for renewal, and confirm refund eligibility for the storefront you use.
