For Mac users, the privacy difference between cloud-storage services comes down chiefly to who controls the encryption keys, what happens if you lose account access, and how much information remains visible for syncing and sharing. iCloud Drive is not end-to-end encrypted by default: Apple’s optional Advanced Data Protection (ADP) changes that for iCloud Drive, but also makes account recovery your responsibility. Proton Drive says its file contents and names are end-to-end encrypted, while some operational metadata remains accessible to the service. Other providers’ cited privacy information does not establish the same key-access details.
What “private cloud storage” means on a Mac
Encryption in transit protects data as it moves between your Mac and a service. Encryption at rest protects stored data on the provider’s systems. Neither fact alone means the provider cannot decrypt your files: a service may retain the keys and be able to access content for recovery or service functions.

End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is a different arrangement. The provider says it cannot decrypt the protected content. That protection still does not answer every privacy question: file names, sharing activity, account details, or other operational metadata may be handled separately. Nor does cloud encryption protect an unlocked Mac or every copy synced to its drive.

| Service | What the cited material establishes | Recovery and metadata considerations | Practical fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud Drive | Standard Data Protection is the default. Apple says data is encrypted in transit and at rest, with keys secured in Apple data centres. With optional ADP, iCloud Drive is among the categories protected by E2EE. | With ADP, Apple says it cannot recover protected data for someone who loses account access. Mail, Contacts, and Calendars remain encrypted in transit and on server, with Apple holding the keys, even with ADP. | A natural choice for Apple integration; ADP is for users prepared to manage their own recovery path. |
| Proton Drive | Proton says file contents, filenames, folder names, and thumbnail previews are E2EE. Its product material describes Mac support, desktop syncing, and sharing links with optional passwords and expiry. | Its policy says some service metadata remains accessible, including creation and modification times, permissions, and details of shared-link activity. Deleted items may remain in trash until permanently deleted; prior versions can persist while versioning is active. | Worth considering when protecting file content and names from the provider is a priority, while accepting that operational metadata is not all hidden. |
| Dropbox | The cited overview says files are encrypted at rest using AES and protected in transit with SSL/TLS. It also describes advanced key management and E2EE as additional features. | The overview does not establish that E2EE is enabled for every account or included in every plan. | Check current plan eligibility and feature terms before relying on an E2EE option. |
| Google Drive | The cited privacy page describes account-name and email use, Drive search queries used for recent-search display, some location information, storage-purchase history, activity controls, and data export. | That page does not establish the cryptographic key-access model for personal Drive files. | Review activity and account controls, but do not infer provider inability to decrypt files from this source. |
iCloud Drive: default protection versus Advanced Data Protection
Apple’s standard protection encrypts iCloud data in transit and at rest, but Apple says it holds keys for many data categories. ADP is an optional account setting that expands E2EE protection to 25 categories; Apple’s category table includes iCloud Drive, iCloud Backup, Photos, and Notes. It does not make every iCloud service end-to-end encrypted: Mail, Contacts, and Calendars remain protected in transit and on server with Apple holding the keys.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Decide whether you can accept ADP’s recovery tradeoff
Apple says ADP-protected data must be recovered using an available device passcode or password, a recovery contact, or a personal recovery key. If you lose access and cannot use those methods, Apple says it cannot recover the protected data for you. Every Apple device on the account also needs software that supports ADP. Before enabling it, make sure your recovery contact or key is set up and that you can keep your devices updated.
Proton Drive: strong content privacy, not zero metadata
Proton says it encrypts Drive files automatically, including filenames and folders, and its privacy policy also identifies thumbnail previews as E2EE. Its product material lists macOS support and desktop syncing. For links, Proton describes optional password protection and expiry; those controls govern access to a shared link, not the underlying key model or the identity of every recipient.
Rank #2
- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
The policy draws a distinction between encrypted content and service information. Proton says it can access creation and modification times, permissions, and the username associated with an upload. For shared URLs, it says it can access when a link was created and last accessed, how many times it was accessed, and who created it. The policy also says moving an item to trash does not permanently delete it until it is permanently deleted, and prior versions may remain while versioning is active.

What the cited Dropbox and Google information does—and doesn’t—show
Dropbox
Dropbox’s cited overview describes AES encryption at rest and SSL/TLS protection in transit, then presents advanced key management and E2EE as additional features. Those are not grounds to assume ordinary files on every account are E2EE. If provider inability to decrypt is essential to your choice, confirm the current feature’s eligibility and terms for the exact account or plan you intend to use.

Google Drive
Google’s cited privacy page is useful for understanding some account and activity data: it describes account-name and email use for syncing and service notices, Drive searches retained for recent-search display, some location information used for experience or security, and prior storage-purchase information. It also points to activity controls and a download/export route. It does not settle who can decrypt personal Drive files, so this evidence is insufficient to treat Drive as E2EE or to rule it out on that basis.
Keep the Mac and synced copies private too
Cloud-side encryption does not secure a Mac account that someone can access, or every local copy downloaded by a sync client. macOS asks for permission before apps access certain sensitive file locations; review those permissions in System Settings when an app’s access seems broader than necessary. FileVault encrypts the Mac’s volume so the data remains protected if the storage device is removed, unless valid credentials or a recovery key are supplied.
Rank #4
- USB-C and USB 3.1 compatible.Specific uses: Business, personal
- Innovative style with refined metal cover
- Password protection with 256-bit AES hardware encryption
- Formatted for Mac
- Use a strong Mac login password and lock the screen when you step away.
- Review which apps have access to sensitive folders in macOS privacy settings.
- Enable FileVault if you need protection for data stored on the Mac itself.
- For a separate backup copy, an encrypted external SSD can complement cloud storage; it is a backup, not a replacement for sync.
Choose by your recovery and collaboration needs
- Choose iCloud Drive with standard protection if Apple ecosystem integration and Apple-assisted recovery functions matter more to you than provider-inaccessible keys for Drive files.
- Consider iCloud Drive with ADP if E2EE for iCloud Drive fits your needs and you can reliably maintain supported devices and a recovery contact or key.
- Consider Proton Drive if you want the provider to be unable to decrypt file contents and names according to its stated design, and its available Mac workflow and link controls suit your collaboration needs.
- Investigate Dropbox’s current E2EE eligibility if you already rely on Dropbox, rather than assuming its standard at-rest and in-transit encryption provides E2EE.
- Do not decide Google Drive’s key custody from the cited privacy page alone. It covers some account and activity information, not the personal-file encryption key model.
For any service, verify current feature availability before moving sensitive files. If you share, use recipient restrictions where available and consider password and expiry controls; encrypted storage and controlled link access solve different problems. These descriptions reflect provider documentation, not an independent audit or app test.
