If you want to generate images without sending each prompt to a hosted service, you can run an open-weight image model on your own computer or use an on-device app. ComfyUI offers flexible local workflows; Fooocus keeps the interface simpler but is in bug-fix-only support; and Private Diffusion targets supported Apple devices. Local inference can keep generation on your hardware, but privacy depends on your settings and any extensions or cloud features you use.
Which private alternative fits your workflow?
| Option | Best fit | Workflow and model notes | Platform and stated requirements | Status or cost notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ComfyUI | People who want flexible, reusable workflows and hands-on control. | Node-based interface with a broad model catalog and image-editing capabilities. Supports building and automating workflows. | Windows, Linux, and macOS; multiple GPU types are supported with manual installation. A dedicated GPU is strongly recommended; more VRAM supports larger models and batches. | Core software can run offline. Optional paid API and partner nodes are available and can be disabled. Model files can require substantial disk space. |
| Fooocus | People who prefer a prompt-focused interface with fewer controls. | Built around Stable Diffusion XL (SDXL); the project says there are no current plans to add newer model architectures. | Repository lists a 4 GB NVIDIA GPU minimum. The first run downloads SDXL model files. | Described by maintainers as offline, open source, and free. The repository labels support “Limited Long-Term Support (LTS) with Bug Fixes Only.” |
| Automatic1111 WebUI | People looking for a traditional web interface and community/plugin ecosystem. | Stability AI’s guide characterizes it as a traditional web UI with community and plugin support. The cited guide does not provide a comparable hardware minimum. | Not stated in the cited guide as a product-specific minimum. | Open-source interface listed by Stability AI. Plugin behavior depends on what you install and enable. |
| InvokeAI | People who want a modern dashboard and accessible image-editing tools. | Stability AI’s guide highlights workflow clarity, upscaling, and inpainting. The cited guide does not provide a comparable hardware minimum. | Not stated in the cited guide as a product-specific minimum. | Open-source interface listed by Stability AI. |
| Private Diffusion | People who want text-to-image generation on supported Apple hardware. | Runs on iOS, iPadOS, or macOS 26.4 and Apple Silicon, according to its vendor. Generates from text prompts; image-to-image and inpainting are not offered. | Vendor states an 8 GB device-memory minimum; some models require 12 GB or 16 GB tiers. | Vendor describes it as a TestFlight beta and says it is free during beta. Launch pricing was undecided on the accessed page. |
The table combines official product descriptions, not independent head-to-head tests. Its memory figures refer to different products and are not interchangeable; the cited pages do not establish a controlled winner for image quality or speed.

Can you run an AI image generator locally and offline?
Yes. With a local interface and model weights installed, image generation can run on your own computer rather than relying on a hosted generator. Stability AI describes local Stable Diffusion use as offline and independent of cloud services. ComfyUI says its core runs fully offline and does not download anything unless requested. Private Diffusion says that after its model download, the app makes no app-code network calls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOffline use does not mean setup requires no internet: you need network access to obtain software, dependencies, and model files. Optional services also change the data boundary. ComfyUI documents --offline to disable optional paid API nodes and --disable-partner-nodes to disable API nodes. Extensions and custom nodes are separate software; review what they do and whether they connect to remote services before adding them. Product privacy statements are not evidence of an independent privacy audit.

How much GPU memory do you need?
There is no single minimum for all local image generators. Requirements depend on the model, interface, and device; treat each figure as a product specification rather than a guarantee of performance.
- Stability AI’s self-hosting guide: at least 6 GB of NVIDIA GPU VRAM, with an RTX 3060 or higher recommended for the setup it describes. It lists Windows, macOS with an M-series chip, or Linux, plus Python 3.10+, Git, and Conda or venv. These are the guide’s requirements, not universal requirements for every model or front end.
- Fooocus: its repository lists a 4 GB minimum for an NVIDIA GPU. Model files are downloaded on first run, so offline generation is possible after the required files and dependencies are obtained.
- ComfyUI: its download FAQ strongly recommends a dedicated GPU and notes that additional VRAM permits larger models and batches. It does not give one universal VRAM minimum; model files, rather than the ComfyUI software itself, are the substantial disk-space consideration.
- Private Diffusion: its vendor states an 8 GB device-memory minimum, with some models requiring 12 GB or 16 GB tiers.
These specifications come from the respective publishers, and no comparable independent performance benchmark is established by the cited pages. Before choosing hardware, check the requirements for the specific model and software version you plan to use; Stability AI’s RTX 3060 recommendation applies to its described setup, not every local-generation use case.

What to check before choosing
Privacy boundary
Confirm that generation happens locally and identify any enabled API nodes, partner integrations, plugins, or other remote features. A local interface alone cannot guarantee that every part of a customized setup stays on-device.

Models and maintenance
Fooocus may suit a reader who wants SDXL with fewer controls, but its maintainers describe support as limited to bug fixes and say newer model architectures are not currently planned. For broader workflow flexibility, ComfyUI documents a broad model catalog. Check the model’s own license and terms: running a model locally does not automatically grant commercial-use rights, and model and output terms can differ.

Editing needs
If your work involves more than text-to-image, look at the exact tools the interface documents. ComfyUI supports image-editing workflows; the Stability AI guide points to InvokeAI for tools such as inpainting and upscaling. Private Diffusion’s stated feature set is narrower: text-to-image without image-to-image or inpainting.
Setup and storage
Local generation involves obtaining the interface, dependencies, and model weights. The amount of storage depends on the models you choose; ComfyUI’s FAQ notes that model files, not the interface itself, consume substantial disk space. A prompt-oriented interface may involve fewer workflow decisions, while node-based workflows offer more control at the cost of a learning curve.

How to make the choice
- Choose your device first. For Windows or Linux flexibility across workflows, consider a local interface such as ComfyUI. For Apple-device generation, check whether your hardware and operating-system version meet Private Diffusion’s stated support.
- Match the interface to your work. Pick a node graph if you want reusable, adjustable workflows; consider Fooocus if SDXL and a simpler prompt-oriented experience are enough. Evaluate Automatic1111 or InvokeAI if their traditional UI or editing approach better matches your needs.
- Check model and memory requirements. Confirm the exact model family, VRAM or device-memory needs, and available disk space before downloading. Do not compare the listed memory numbers as if they measured equivalent performance.
- Review data flows and terms. Disable optional cloud or API integrations if you do not want to use them, inspect extensions before installing, and read the specific model license before commercial reuse.
