The announcement describes a roadmap, not confirmed support for any specific device. VideoCardz reported that AMD intends to include existing and upcoming APUs and has developed a lighter FSR 4 model for APU environments.
What AMD has announced
Huynh’s statement, as reported by VideoCardz and explicitly presented as a translation, says: “We will expand FSR 4 across our product lineup, including APUs, gaming laptops and handheld devices, by the end of this year.” The report is dated October 7, 2026, so “by the end of this year” refers to the end of 2026. It also says AMD plans to support existing and upcoming APUs with a lighter model designed for APU environments. Read the report.

The report does not identify an APU, laptop, handheld, game, driver version or staged rollout date. It is therefore too early to treat any particular AMD-based device as confirmed to support FSR 4.

AMD’s current published specifications are for discrete Radeon graphics cards, not the newly announced APU expansion. The latest GPUOpen SDK page lists FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 for Radeon RX 9000 and RX 7000 Series discrete GPUs, with Shader Model 6.6 among the requirements. RX 7000 support was added in SDK 2.3. See AMD’s FSR SDK documentation.

AMD’s earlier FSR 4.0.2 overview lists Radeon RX 9000 Series and newer, Windows 10 or 11, and DirectX 12 as the supported configuration. The later SDK 2.3 documentation adds RX 7000 Series support, so the newer SDK requirements are the more current reference for FSR Upscaling 4.1.1. View AMD’s FSR 4 overview.
Game and driver conditions matter
The SDK says games that integrated FSR 3.1 or later may receive automatic upgrades to FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 on RX 9000 and RX 7000 GPUs through future Adrenalin driver releases. That route is conditional: it applies to DirectX 12 and depends on the game release permitting the upgrade. It is not a guarantee that every game will use FSR 4 automatically.
Which APUs and handhelds are confirmed?
None are named in the announcement or the AMD documentation cited above. The roadmap covers broad categories, but it does not establish a compatibility list or say that all existing APUs will qualify. Nor does it confirm that any currently available gaming laptop or handheld will receive the feature.
FSR is implemented in games as software with hardware requirements; it is not a separate physical product called “FSR 4.” Whether a device can use a given version depends on AMD’s eventual hardware support, the game’s implementation and the required software path.

What the APU-focused version could mean for image quality and performance
AMD describes FSR 4 as an ML-based upscaler and says it improves detail and temporal stability compared with FSR 3.1. But the reported announcement provides no measured performance or image-quality results for the lighter APU model. Results from discrete RX 9000 or RX 7000 graphics cards should not be assumed to apply to integrated APU graphics or handhelds.
There is also no announced FPS uplift, battery-life effect, image-quality percentage or device count for the expansion. Those outcomes will depend on the specific hardware, game, settings and implementation, and need testing on supported devices.
What to check before buying a laptop or handheld for FSR 4
If FSR 4 is a deciding factor, wait for device-level confirmation rather than relying on the category-level roadmap. Before purchasing, look for:
Recommended Free Tools
- An AMD compatibility list naming the exact APU or device.
- Supported games and any game-specific requirements.
- The driver version and API requirements for the APU rollout.
- A confirmed release date or rollout schedule.
- Independent performance and image-quality testing on the specific device.
Until those details are published, the end-of-2026 target is a plan, not a promise that a particular laptop or handheld will support FSR 4 by that date.
