Monero, Firo, and Dash are the clearest privacy-focused alternatives to Zcash, but they protect transactions in different ways. Monero makes transaction privacy mandatory at the protocol level. Firo’s Spark protocol is designed for private payments and is the default in Firo’s official wallets. Dash offers an optional shielded pool on its Evolution Platform. Zcash itself supports both transparent and shielded transactions, so the privacy a user gets depends on the path and wallet used.
There is no reliable single “most private” ranking here: default behavior, what transaction details are hidden, pool activity, network metadata, and wallet support all matter.

How do the privacy models compare?
| Cryptocurrency | Privacy model | What the project documentation says is concealed | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monero (XMR) | Transaction privacy is mandatory by protocol. | Official materials describe RingCT, stealth addresses, and ring signatures as privacy technologies. The project says minimum ring-signature sizes were set so all transactions are private by mandate, and that RingCT hides amounts. | The listed network tools do not establish that all network metadata is concealed or quantify their effectiveness. Monero Project overview. |
| Firo (FIRO) | Private payments use Spark; Firo says Spark is the default in its official wallets. | Firo says Spark hides sender, recipient, and amount from public ledger observers. View keys allow chosen disclosure. | Firo’s comparison guide describes a bounded membership set of 215 coins, or 32,768 coins; that is a protocol bound, not a count of active users or a guarantee about the effective privacy of a particular payment. Firo’s privacy overview and Firo’s comparison guide. |
| Dash (DASH) | Optional shielded pool on Dash Evolution Platform. | Dash documents shielded transfers within the pool as concealing parties and amounts. | Pool use and shield/unshield transitions are visible, as are amounts entering or leaving. Privacy depends partly on other notes in the pool. Dash Platform shielded-pool documentation. |
| Zcash (ZEC) | Supports transparent and shielded transaction paths. | Shielded transactions conceal transaction details; transparent transactions expose public ledger details. | Having a shielded option does not mean every transaction uses it. Wallet behavior and path selection matter. |
These are descriptions of project designs, not independent proof that a transaction is anonymous in every situation. “Private” can refer to on-chain sender, recipient, amount, or transaction links; network details such as IP addresses and timing are a separate issue.

Monero: privacy by mandate
Monero’s official overview says minimum ring-signature sizes were set so all transactions are private by mandate. It also lists RingCT, stealth addresses, ring signatures, transactions over Tor or I2P, and Dandelion++ among its privacy technologies. That makes Monero distinct from systems where a user must choose a shielded pool or transaction path. These features should not be read as a promise that every off-chain detail is hidden: the overview does not quantify network protections or provide a current wallet-by-wallet assessment. Firo: Spark is the official-wallet default
Firo describes Spark as its protocol for private direct payments and says its official wallets make private payments the default. The project says Spark hides the sender, recipient, and amount from public ledger observers, with view keys available for selective sharing. Its comparison guide reports Spark live on mainnet since 18 January 2024. Firo: Private and Firo’s comparison guide.
The guide gives Spark a membership-set bound of 215 coins—32,768 coins, according to Firo’s guide checked 23 July 2026. That figure describes a protocol set, not 32,768 active participants or the number of plausible participants in any one payment. Actual privacy depends on use and wallet behavior as well as the protocol design.

Does Dash have shielded transactions?
Yes. Dash’s documentation describes an optional shielded pool on its Evolution Platform, using Orchard, the shielded protocol also used by Zcash’s current shielded pool. Dash announced that shielded transactions were live on the Evolution mainnet on 4 August 2026. The date is a project-reported deployment announcement, not an independent performance assessment. - Shielded transfers inside the pool conceal parties and amounts.
- Observers can see whether a transition is a shield, unshield, or transfer.
- Amounts entering or leaving the pool are visible, and Layer 1 transactions on either side are not shielded by the pool.
- The privacy set depends on the other notes in the pool.
Dash is therefore an option for users who want an optional shielded pool, not a protocol-wide default equivalent to Monero’s model.
What does Zcash’s own model have in common with these alternatives?
Zcash offers both transparent and shielded transaction paths. Its project learning materials promote shielded-by-default wallet use, but that recommendation does not make every Zcash transaction shielded. The practical comparison is between how a specific wallet behaves and what details its chosen path exposes—not just whether a coin has shielded transactions as a capability.

Dash’s pool and Zcash’s shielded path both involve a choice to use shielding; Monero’s documented model instead makes transaction privacy mandatory. Firo’s Spark is presented by Firo as private by default in its official wallets. Those distinctions can matter as much as the cryptographic design when deciding which system fits a particular use.

Protocol documentation alone cannot establish current wallet compatibility, exchange availability, merchant acceptance, or legality in a particular country. Those are separate, changeable questions that need checking for the relevant service and jurisdiction.
