That tells you whether to troubleshoot the cable or Bluetooth pairing, Steam Input and overlays, competing devices, or the game’s controller support. Work through the checks below in order, changing one thing at a time.
Find where the controller disappears
Check the same controller in three places: whether it connects to the PC, whether Steam lists it as detected, and whether the game responds to it. Also note whether the problem affects every game or only one, and whether you are using USB or Bluetooth. These observations narrow the cause; they do not by themselves prove a specific fault.
- It does not connect to the PC: start with the cable, USB port, charge, or Bluetooth pairing.
- It connects, but Steam does not list it: focus on Steam’s controller settings and possible device or software conflicts.
- Steam lists it, but one game does not respond: check that game’s controller support and configuration.
- It works in some games but not others: compare each game’s support and input settings rather than assuming the controller is faulty.
Confirm the game supports controllers
Not every Steam game supports gamepad input. Steam’s Big Picture mode guide distinguishes Full Controller Support from Partial Controller Support. Full support means the game can be downloaded, launched, and played using only a controller. Partial support means the controller may work during gameplay, but a mouse or keyboard may still be needed for installation, configuration, or parts of the interface.
If Steam recognizes your controller but a game does not, check that game’s Steam store support information and its own settings before troubleshooting the device further. A controller can be connected and working while a particular game still does not accept its input.

Check whether Steam detects the controller
Open Steam’s controller settings and look for the device in the detected-controller list. Use the available test or configuration tools to see whether Steam registers its inputs. Steam’s controller troubleshooting guide explains its controller checks.
- If Steam does not detect it: continue with the USB or Bluetooth checks, then isolate other devices and software.
- If Steam detects it: investigate the game’s support and configuration, Steam Input handling, and overlays rather than treating the controller as wholly unrecognized.
Test the connection
For a USB connection
- Close the game, then unplug and reseat the controller cable at both ends.
- Try another USB port. If behavior changes by port, leave the controller on the port that works while you continue testing.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB peripherals and test again. Steam describes USB scheduling or contention as a possible cause of intermittent disconnections or port-dependent behavior; its USB connection and contention help covers this issue.
- If possible, test the controller on another computer. This helps determine whether the problem follows the controller or is specific to the original PC.
If you test with a different cable, it must match the controller’s connector and support data transfer; a cable that only charges the controller will not establish a USB data connection.

For Bluetooth
- Charge the controller and put it into its Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Confirm that the controller model supports Bluetooth; a controller that does not advertise Bluetooth cannot be discovered wirelessly.
- Check whether the PC detects and connects to it. Being visible during discovery and successfully connected are separate steps.
- If available, try pairing the controller with another host. If it fails there too, the issue may follow the controller rather than the PC.

Check Steam Input and overlays
If Steam sees the controller but the game does not, review Steam’s controller settings and the game’s controller configuration. Then check whether the Steam Overlay is enabled where relevant. Steam Support says, “The Steam Overlay is vital to Steam Controller functionality.” That guidance applies to Steam Controller troubleshooting; it is not a claim that every controller or game depends on the overlay in the same way.

- Close the game and restart Steam, then relaunch the game and test again.
- Review Steam’s controller settings and the game’s input configuration.
- Temporarily disable third-party software or external launcher overlays as a diagnostic test. Steam lists these among possible conflicts.
- Test the game again. If disabling an overlay changes the result, re-enable overlays one at a time to identify the conflict and restore unrelated settings.
Isolate other input devices
Another controller or input device can interfere with the one you are testing. Steam recommends isolating devices to identify a conflict.
- Close the game and disconnect other controllers and unnecessary input devices.
- Reconnect only the controller you are testing, then relaunch the game.
- If it works, reconnect the other devices one at a time, relaunching or testing after each addition until the problem returns.
- If a particular device triggers the failure, try updating or disabling that device’s driver as appropriate.

If it still is not detected
Steam’s support pages are most useful for Steam games and Steam’s controller handling. They do not establish one set of menus or fixes for every Windows setup, controller model, non-Steam launcher, or game. If the controller connects to the PC but is not recognized outside Steam, or if the issue persists in a non-Steam game, consult the controller maker’s and game publisher’s current official instructions for that model and title.
