ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini all offer ways to limit whether your conversations are used to improve AI models, but none of those controls should be read as a promise of zero storage or review. The setting, account type, feedback you submit, and safety exceptions matter. Here is what the providers’ current policies say, and how to interpret them before sharing personal information.
What “not used for training” does—and does not—mean
A training opt-out concerns one use of your chat: improving models. It does not necessarily prevent the provider from temporarily keeping the conversation to deliver the service, protect users, investigate safety concerns, or process feedback. Temporary and activity-off modes also have retention rules of their own.

Provider policies describe their stated practices; they are not independent audits or guarantees that a service is appropriate for confidential, regulated, or highly sensitive information. OpenAI’s consumer guidance puts the practical caution plainly: “Please do not enter sensitive information that you would not want reviewed or used.” OpenAI consumer data guidance

How the three services handle training controls
The comparison below reflects the providers’ published documentation as of October 4, 2026. Settings and terms can change, and availability or scope may depend on account and region.

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub was last updated September 24, 2026. Anthropic’s cited consumer retention guidance is dated July 1, 2026; its training guidance is dated March 16, 2026. OpenAI’s model-improvement policy was updated March 13, 2026. The dates matter because privacy settings and terms are subject to change.
How to choose and configure a chatbot
If you want to use a personal account
- ChatGPT: Open settings and turn off “Improve the model for everyone” to stop new conversations from being used for model improvement. For a conversation you want kept out of chat history and memories, use Temporary Chat. Do not submit feedback on a conversation you want excluded from improvement, because feedback may change how the associated chat is handled.
- Claude: Review the Model Improvement setting in your account and leave it disabled if you do not want to opt in. Choose Incognito chat when you want that chat excluded from model improvement even if the setting is enabled. Keep in mind that Anthropic also identifies safety-flagged conversations as a possible use case.
- Gemini Apps: In Gemini Apps, switch Keep Activity off to stop future chats from being used for training unless you submit feedback. This does not make the chat disappear immediately: Google says it keeps those chats for 72 hours, and other Google settings may continue to save data.
If you are using an organization account or API
Check the agreement and controls for the specific product and workspace, rather than assuming consumer settings apply. OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, Edu, and API data are excluded from model improvement by default unless an organization opts in. Anthropic’s consumer policy explicitly distinguishes consumer from commercial products; the consumer terms summarized above should not be applied automatically to a commercial workspace.

What to check before entering information
- Training scope: Does the control cover only new chats, or the current conversation too?
- Retention: Is the chat saved in history, held briefly after deletion, or retained for safety or service operations?
- Review exceptions: Can safety or policy enforcement lead to human review or use of a flagged conversation?
- Feedback: Does rating an answer or sending a report affect the associated conversation?
- Account coverage: Is the setting for your personal plan, your organization’s workspace, or the API?
- Current terms: Confirm the live setting and policy for your own account and region before sharing data.
If information would cause harm if it were stored, reviewed, or exposed, the safest choice is not to put it into a cloud chatbot. A training opt-out is a narrower privacy control, not a substitute for that judgment.
