The Lasker Awards distinguish basic research, clinical advances and public service; the Shaw Prize covers biomedical discoveries and clinical-medicine innovation; the Breakthrough Prize recognizes life-sciences contributions broadly; and the Japan Prize’s eligible fields rotate by year. Their published remits overlap, but they do not provide a basis for a universal prestige ranking.
How the awards differ
The most useful comparison is what each award is designed to recognize: the subject area, kind of contribution, and any emphasis on recent work or a particular disease. An award’s published remit is not interchangeable with another’s, even when both honor influential biomedical research.

| Award | What it recognizes | What sets it apart | Current example or detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine | Discoveries in physiology or medicine. | The award citation can recognize fundamental biology with medical relevance. | In 2025, Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi received the award “for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance.” Nobel Prize, 2025 award announcement |
| Lasker Awards | Basic medical discovery, clinical advances, special achievement in medical science, and public service related to medical research, public health or health care. | Separate award categories distinguish discovery from clinical translation and public service. | The Lasker Foundation says the Bloomberg Public Service Award is next offered in 2028. | Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine | Biomedical-science discoveries and innovations in clinical medicine. | Its general principle favors recent distinguished advances and laureates who remain active in their fields. | The 2025 award recognized Wolfgang Baumeister’s work on cryogenic-electron tomography. | Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences | Major contributions to life sciences broadly defined. | The rules give special attention to recent developments and designate one annual prize for Parkinson’s disease and neurodegenerative disorders. | The rules allow awards to individuals jointly or to collaborations. | Japan Prize | Outstanding science and technology achievements that advance knowledge and serve peace and prosperity; eligible fields change over time. | The relevant life-sciences or medical remit depends on the award year. | For 2027, Medical Science and Pharmacological Science covers disease mechanisms and advances in prevention, diagnosis, treatment or prognosis. What the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine recognizes
“Nobel Prize in medicine” is common shorthand; the formal award name is the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Its scope includes discoveries in physiology as well as medicine, so fundamental biological work can qualify when it has medical relevance. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet made the 2025 award to Brunkow, Ramsdell and Sakaguchi for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance.
The Nobel Prize’s historical total is a count, not a measure of comparative standing: the Nobel Prize site reports 116 awards and 232 laureates between 1901 and 2025. Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

Why the Lasker Awards are especially useful to compare by category
Lasker is a family of awards rather than a single-purpose prize. Its named categories make explicit that biomedical impact can take different forms:
- Basic Medical Research: recognizes fundamental discovery.
- Clinical Medical Research: recognizes a clinical advance that improves the lives of many thousands.
- Special Achievement in Medical Science: recognizes sustained achievement in medical science.
- Public Service: recognizes service related to medical research, public health or health care.
Awardees are selected by international juries. The Bloomberg Public Service Award is next offered in 2028, according to the Foundation’s current awards page.

How the Shaw Prize and Breakthrough Prize handle scope and recency
Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine
The Shaw category spans both biomedical-science discoveries and innovations in clinical medicine. Its general principle emphasizes recent, distinguished advances and people who are still active in their fields. The 2025 recognition of Wolfgang Baumeister’s cryogenic-electron tomography work illustrates that its remit can include methods that enable structural insight into biological systems. The Shaw Prize category page lists 42 Life Science and Medicine laureates from 2004 through 2025; that historical count should not be compared with another award’s total as a proxy for prestige or selectivity.

The Breakthrough rules describe a broad remit: “The Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences recognizes major contributions to the field of life sciences, with special attention to recent developments.” In addition to its broad awards, one annual prize is designated for Parkinson’s disease and neurodegenerative disorders. The rules permit joint awards and awards to collaborations, so recognition is not limited to a single individual.

Why the Japan Prize must be checked year by year
The Japan Prize selects eligible fields that rotate. A medical or life-sciences topic may therefore fit one award year’s stated remit and not another’s. For 2027, the field named Medical Science and Pharmacological Science covers work that advances understanding of disease mechanisms and progress in prevention, diagnosis, treatment or prognosis. The 2026 Life Sciences award went to Shizuo Akira and Zhijian Chen for work on nucleic-acid sensing in innate immunity. Consult the field and laureate pages for the year in question rather than assuming a fixed annual category.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare these awards fairly
For a specific scientist or discovery, compare the award rules along these dimensions:
Rank #4
- Scope: Is the remit physiology or medicine, life sciences broadly, biomedical science and clinical medicine, or a rotating science-and-technology field?
- Contribution type: Does the award distinguish basic discovery, clinical advance, sustained achievement or public service?
- Time emphasis: Does its stated principle favor recent work or give special attention to recent developments?
- Special categories: Does it include a distinct award for a disease area or contribution type?
- Year-specific eligibility: Do the eligible fields or award categories change for the year being considered?
These questions explain why awards can honor overlapping areas of biomedical work without being equivalent. Their published criteria do not establish a shared ranking for prestige, influence, selectivity or importance.
