Can I bring my child to visit someone in prison?
Often, but the rules for minors differ by corrections department and facility. They may specify who can accompany a child, whether the child must be approved in advance, and which consent or identity documents are required.

- Indiana: People younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian while on facility grounds. A facility head may approve another responsible adult in some cases, using a specific authorization form. Indiana Department of Correction (2023).
- Washington: A minor must be on the approved visitor list and accompanied throughout the visit by a parent, legal guardian, or designated escort. Washington also requires a notarized consent form attached to the visitor application. Washington State Department of Corrections.

These are examples, not nationwide rules. Ask the prison what paperwork is needed for the specific child and adult escort before the visit.

Possibly, but an adult’s willingness to accompany the child may not be enough. The facility may require prior approval, a designated-escort process, notarized parental consent, or other documents. Indiana, for example, allows a facility head to approve another responsible adult in some cases; Washington requires a designated escort and notarized consent; California requires additional consent and birth-certificate documents when the escort is not a parent or guardian. Confirm the exact requirements with the facility before completing an application or traveling.

What ID do I need to visit someone in prison?
Use the facility’s official list of accepted identification; accepted documents and rules for children vary. For example:
- Washington: Adults 18 and older must present current photo identification at the visit. The department gives a driver’s license or state-issued ID as examples and says international visitors must present a passport. Washington State Department of Corrections.
- Rhode Island: The department lists driver’s licenses, military ID, and certain agency-issued cards. A birth certificate counts as identification only for a minor. Rhode Island Department of Corrections.
- Pennsylvania: Every visitor, regardless of age, must bring identification. The department accepts one photo ID or two non-photo IDs. Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.
Do not assume that a child is exempt from ID requirements: Pennsylvania’s cited rule applies at every age, while Washington’s cited photo-ID requirement is for adults. Check the facility’s list for every person in your group.

Do I need to be on the approved visitor list?
Some systems require visitors to be approved or listed before a visit. Washington specifically requires minors to be on the approved visitor list. Approval rules for adults and children can differ, so check the prison’s application process and confirm that each visitor is cleared before setting out.

How long is a prison visit?
There is no national visit-length limit. The facility sets its schedule and may adjust it for local circumstances. Rhode Island says each facility warden determines the visitation schedule, including visit days and times, location, length, the number of weekly visits per incarcerated person, and the number of visitors allowed at one time. In-person and video visits may have different rules. As one state-specific example, Michigan’s page describes video visits of up to 20 minutes; that figure is not a general limit for in-person visits or for prisons in other jurisdictions. Michigan Department of Corrections.
Can a visit be canceled or end early?
Yes. Washington says facility schedules vary and emergencies can cancel visits or end them early. Check the facility’s visitation guidelines, schedule, and alerts on the day of travel. What to check before traveling
- Confirm that every visitor, including any child, is approved or listed if required.
- Check the acceptable ID for each person, including minors.
- Get the required escort approval, consent forms, notarization, and any child-specific documents.
- Verify the current visiting hours, visit duration, and whether the booking is for in-person or video visitation.
- Check for alerts or closures shortly before leaving; contact visit staff if a requirement or schedule is unclear.
