Prisma Client Not Found in a pnpm Monorepo? Find the Right Fix

A version-aware guide to diagnosing missing Prisma Client files, workspace dependency mistakes, package exports, Prisma 8 contract emission, and pnpm compatibility.

A Prisma Client resolution error in a pnpm monorepo usually comes down to one of three things: the client was not generated or emitted, the consuming app does not depend on the package that owns it, or that package’s export points to the wrong file. Start by identifying your Prisma major version: Prisma 6 and 7 use generated-client workflows, while Prisma 8’s current pnpm guide uses a contract-and-client package with a contract-emission step. The correct fix depends on which workflow your project uses.

First identify the versions and the missing path

Before changing dependencies or configuration, record the exact unresolved import and the versions involved. From the workspace root, run pnpm --version. Then check the Prisma CLI and client versions declared by the relevant package manifests and installed in the workspace. Note which directory you were in when the failing command ran.

Use those details to choose the applicable official workflow: Prisma 8’s pnpm workspace guide, the Prisma 7 workspace guide, or the Prisma 6 generator guidance. Do not apply a Prisma 7 generate fix to a Prisma 8 setup without checking its documented contract workflow.

Check that the workspace package owns and exports the client

In a monorepo, a shared database package should provide a clear boundary: it owns the Prisma schema and the generated client or contract, and consuming apps import through that package’s public entry point. Confirm the app declares the database package as a workspace dependency, for example "database": "workspace:*", and that imports use the package name rather than reaching into another package’s internal generated directory.

Next inspect the package’s exports map and entry file. For Prisma 6 or 7, verify that the generator’s configured output directory exists and that the exported entry file actually re-exports or imports the generated client and types from that location. The Prisma 7 workspace example demonstrates a database package that re-exports the client and generated types. For Prisma 8, use the contract-and-client package structure in the current pnpm guide; its exports should resolve to the package entry point and emitted artifacts described there.

  • If the error names a generated file, check whether that exact file exists at the configured output path.
  • If the error names the database package itself, check the app’s workspace dependency and the package’s exports entry.
  • If the package resolves but a runtime import fails, inspect the package entry file and module format as well as the generated files.

Declare dependencies in the package that uses them

With pnpm’s isolated dependency layout, a package should declare the dependencies its own code imports. If the database package imports Prisma runtime modules, declare the required Prisma dependency directly in that package rather than relying on an incidental dependency at the repository root. Likewise, the app should declare its workspace dependency on the database package.

Prisma’s current pnpm guide describes resolving a package’s direct dependency through its isolated node_modules; it does not require hoisting configuration for that setup. Adding hoisting settings is therefore not a first-line fix for an undeclared dependency or a broken package export.

Run the command for your Prisma major version

Prisma 6 or 7: generate the client in the schema-owning package

For Prisma 6 and 7 generated-client setups, run generation from the package that owns the schema, using the workspace’s installed CLI. In that package, run pnpm prisma generate. Then confirm the generated files appear in the configured output directory and that the package’s public entry point refers to those files. Prisma’s Prisma 6 generator guidance recommends configuring a custom output path; do not assume the default node_modules/.prisma/client location will suit a shared-package build or export setup.

For Prisma 7, the workspace package should generate the client before a consuming app is built or started, and generation should be repeated after schema changes. See Prisma’s v7 workspace guidance for the package and script arrangement.

Prisma 8: emit the contract from the contract-owning package

The current Prisma 8 pnpm workspace guide uses a shared package containing the contract, emitted contract.json and contract.d.ts, and runtime client. After changing the contract, run pnpm prisma contract emit from the package that owns it, then confirm the emitted artifacts and package entry point are available to the consuming app. This is not the Prisma 7 generated-client-directory workflow; follow the Prisma 8 pnpm guide for its package layout and commands.

Check pnpm compatibility only for the documented Prisma 8 defect

Prisma’s current guide specifies Node.js 24 or later and pnpm 10.26 or later for its documented setup. It also identifies a narrower issue: pnpm 12.0 through 12.4.0 can produce a broken CLI-engine link in that setup, while pnpm 12.4.1 or later fixes the link defect. These boundaries apply to the documented Prisma 8 setup step, not every Prisma Client resolution error.

If your Prisma 8 workspace is affected by that specific broken-link issue, the guide recommends running pnpm dedupe and then emitting the contract again with pnpm prisma contract emit. Do not use deduplication as a general remedy for a missing generated file, absent workspace dependency, or incorrect export.

Resolve ESM loading errors separately

If the failure is about loading a JSON import under Prisma 8 rather than resolving the package, check module format. The current guide says its generated JSON import uses an import attribute required by Node’s ESM loader and expects the package to use "type": "module". If the package is CommonJS, the guide says to change it to module format. Confirm that this is the error you have before changing the package setting, since an ESM mismatch is distinct from a missing client or broken workspace export.

Use the error path to choose the next check

What the failure points to Check Likely corrective action
Generated Prisma Client file is missing Schema-owning package, generator output path, and whether generation ran after the latest schema change For Prisma 6 or 7, run pnpm prisma generate in the schema-owning package and align the package export with the configured output.
Database workspace package cannot be resolved Consuming app’s workspace dependency and the package’s public exports entry Declare the workspace dependency and point the public entry at a file that exists.
Prisma runtime module cannot be resolved from the database package Whether that package directly declares the runtime dependency its code imports Add the direct dependency to the package that uses it; do not rely on root-level installation.
Prisma 8 contract artifact is missing Whether the contract changed and the owning package emitted its artifacts Run pnpm prisma contract emit in the contract-owning package.
Prisma 8 CLI-engine link is broken Whether pnpm is 12.0–12.4.0 and the failure matches the guide’s setup defect Use pnpm 12.4.1 or later, or for an already affected workspace follow the guide’s pnpm dedupe then contract-emission recovery.
JSON import fails under Node’s ESM loader Whether the Prisma 8 package uses ESM as expected Set "type": "module" when following the guide’s ESM package setup.

If none of these checks matches the full error, avoid changing versions or package configuration at random. The exact error text, installed Prisma versions, package manifests, and export targets determine which boundary is failing.
