To print on index cards in Word, make the document match the card’s measured dimensions, check that your printer and its driver support feeding that size and stock, then test the layout on plain paper before loading cards. Word can prepare the page, but it cannot make an unsupported printer feed small or heavy media.
What you need to check before setting up Word
Start with the physical card, not a presumed standard. Measure its width and height: common sizes include 3 × 5 inches and 4 × 6 inches, but cards can differ. Then consult the manual for your exact printer and confirm four things:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The card dimensions are supported.
- The correct tray or manual-feed path for small media is identified.
- The card stock’s type and weight are within the printer’s limits.
- The driver offers the required paper size and media settings.
Support is model-specific. Canon documentation lists 3.00 × 5.00-inch cards for particular models, while a Lexmark guide gives 3 × 5-inch cards as an example of narrow media for a multipurpose feeder and specifies tray-dependent stock limits. These examples do not establish compatibility with other printers. Check the documentation for your device before trying to feed cards. Canon and Lexmark printer documentation
Set the Word page to match the card
Choose the closest supported page size
In Word desktop, open the Layout tab and look for the page-size controls. Labels and available sizes can vary by Word version and platform. Select the card’s exact dimensions if they are offered. Set orientation to match the way you intend to print: for a 3 × 5-inch card, for example, portrait uses the 3-inch dimension as the page width and landscape uses the 5-inch dimension.

If the card size is missing
Check whether your printer driver supports a custom paper size and how its manual says to define it. Do not assume that a setting described for another Microsoft app works identically in Word: Microsoft’s custom-size and card-stock testing instructions cited here are for Publisher and printer properties, not a universal Word procedure. Ultimately, the printer and driver determine which sizes Word can use. Microsoft Publisher and printer-properties guidance
Keep content inside the printable area
Leave space around all edges. Printers have non-printable areas, and their size varies; a design that reaches the edge of the Word page may be clipped even when the page dimensions are correct. Check the orientation and scaling options in the print dialog, and use Word’s preview to inspect the result before printing.

Test the layout before using card stock
- In Word, open File > Print.
- Choose the intended printer and inspect the preview. Use the page arrows to review each page if the document has more than one.
- Print a test on plain paper. Microsoft’s Publisher guidance recommends this adjacent check for card-stock designs; it is useful for spotting layout or alignment problems before using specialty stock. Microsoft card-stock testing guidance
- Place the paper test against an index card and compare the printed position with the card edges. Adjust the Word margins, orientation, or print scaling if needed.
- Only after the test looks right, load the card stock using the feed path and media settings specified in your printer manual.
Print from Word and inspect the result
In Word for Windows, select File > Print, review the preview, select the printer and the desired copies or other available options, then select Print. Microsoft documents this workflow for Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2016–2024. Its guidance notes, “Before you print, you can preview your document and specify which pages you want.” Microsoft Support: Print a document in Word for Windows

After the first card prints, check that text is not clipped, alignment is acceptable, and the stock fed cleanly. If the card skews, jams, or does not appear as an available size, stop rather than repeatedly feeding it; recheck the printer’s supported dimensions, tray, stock weight, and driver settings.

If your printer does not support the card size or stock, do not force the cards through an unsuitable tray. Two alternatives are to print several designs on full-size sheets and trim them, or to ask a commercial printer about specialty stock or a larger run. Microsoft discusses commercial printers for specialty papers and larger jobs, but does not provide a Word-specific recipe for either alternative. Microsoft guidance on commercial printing
