To connect a speaker to an LG Smart TV, use a connection supported by both devices: HDMI ARC/eARC, optical audio, Bluetooth, or—on some models—a headphone output. Check the labels beside the TV’s ports and its model manual first; not every HDMI port supports ARC, and a 3.5 mm jack may be for diagnostics or RS232 control rather than audio.
Choose a connection your TV and speaker both support
Look at the TV and speaker’s port labels and confirm the options in their manuals. Menu names and available features differ by LG model and webOS version, so treat the paths below as examples rather than universal instructions.

Connect a soundbar with HDMI ARC or eARC
- Find the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC and the soundbar port labeled TV eARC/ARC. Do not assume another HDMI input supports ARC.
- Connect those two ports with an HDMI cable. The model-specific LG owner manual recommends a certified HDMI cable for ARC.
- If necessary, set the soundbar’s input or function to ARC. On the TV, open Sound Out or Output Speaker and select HDMI ARC/eARC.
- Check the soundbar display for an indication such as “ARC” or “E-ARC” and test the TV audio.
LG describes ARC as sending the TV audio signal to the soundbar through the HDMI cable. It can also allow the TV remote to control soundbar power and volume. Confirm the feature and menu labels in the manuals for your devices: LG notes that setup varies by model.

Connect with an optical audio cable
- Connect the TV’s optical digital audio output to the soundbar or receiver’s optical input.
- Select the optical source on the soundbar or receiver.
- On the TV, open Sound Out and choose Optical or Optical Out Device. Depending on the webOS version, the route may include a Use Wired Speaker step. LG’s examples include All Settings > Sound > Sound Out > Optical on webOS 5.0 or older, and an additional step on webOS 6.0/22.
Align the optical plug with the socket and insert it gently; LG warns that forcing it can damage the terminal. If your menus differ, use the TV’s model-specific manual rather than assuming the example path applies.

Pair a Bluetooth speaker
- Put the speaker into Bluetooth pairing mode.
- On the LG TV, open Sound Out and find its Bluetooth device list. Choose the speaker when it appears.
- Confirm the TV is outputting sound to Bluetooth, then test playback.
The menu path depends on webOS. LG provides separate instructions for webOS 26 or later, webOS 6.0 or later, and webOS 5.0 or earlier; consult the instructions for your TV’s version rather than relying on a single path. If the speaker does not appear, it may have reconnected to a phone or tablet it was paired with previously. Turn Bluetooth off on that device, put the speaker back into pairing mode, and search again on the TV.
LG says some TVs can play to two compatible Bluetooth headphones or earbuds at once. That guidance is specifically about headphones and earbuds; it does not establish that two Bluetooth speakers can be used simultaneously.

Use a headphone output only if your model has one
LG says a headphone output is not common on its TVs. Check the model manual and port labels before connecting anything: a 3.5 mm connector may instead be a diagnostic or RS232 port. Some newer webOS 3.0 TVs support output to headphones and internal TV speakers at the same time, but availability depends on the exact model.

Fix a connection with no sound
- Check Sound Out: Make sure the TV is set to the external speaker or connection you are using, not the internal TV speakers.
- Match the external device input: For a soundbar or receiver, select the same input as the connected cable, such as ARC or optical.
- Check the cable: Reseat both ends of an HDMI or optical cable. For a wired setup that remains silent, try a known-good cable.
- Check Bluetooth pairing: Put the speaker in pairing mode, make sure it has not connected to another device, and verify that the TV’s sound output is Bluetooth.
- Check mute and compatibility: Confirm the TV and speaker models support the selected connection and that neither device is muted.
