Price Your Wi-Fi Router Separately From Your Internet Service

Your router and broadband service are separate costs, even when both appear on one bill. Check existing equipment, recurring rental fees, one-time charges, and ISP compatibility before buying.

When you compare internet costs, separate the broadband plan from any router or gateway charge: your monthly service price, recurring equipment rental, and one-time equipment or setup fees are different costs. Before buying a router, check what equipment you already have and whether it works with your provider and plan.

First, separate the internet service from the equipment

Your internet bill pays for broadband service from an internet service provider (ISP). A router is hardware in your home that shares that connection with devices, usually over Wi-Fi. A modem connects your home network to the provider’s service; a router distributes the connection around your home. Some providers supply a single gateway that combines modem and router functions. Cox’s equipment guidance and Consumer Reports’ router guide explain these distinctions.

That difference matters when budgeting: the router does not make the broadband plan itself cheaper or faster. It is a separate equipment decision, even when its rental charge appears on the same bill as internet service.

How to read the costs on your bill

Identify the recurring broadband plan price first, then look for recurring equipment rental and other provider-imposed charges. Also check for one-time equipment, activation, or installation fees. The FCC’s broadband-label rules require providers to disclose categories including recurring provider-imposed fees, equipment rental, and one-time equipment fees; they do not establish one standard price for those charges. Read the FCC order.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5) | Dual Band Wireless Internet, Gigabit, Easy Mesh, Works with Alexa - A Certified for Humans Device
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Broadband plan: the recurring charge for the internet service.
  • Equipment rental: a recurring charge, if your provider bills one for supplied equipment.
  • Equipment purchase: a one-time cost if you buy a compatible router, modem, or combined gateway.
  • Setup charges: one-time activation or installation costs, if applicable.

Do not assume a particular rental price or savings from buying your own router. Charges and equipment arrangements vary, and a purchase only replaces a rental if your provider permits customer-owned equipment for your setup.

Do you need to buy a separate router?

Not necessarily. Start by checking the equipment already installed or supplied by your ISP. If it is a gateway, it may already provide both modem and routing functions, so a separate router may be unnecessary. If you have a modem without router functionality, you will need a router to provide Wi-Fi and share the connection with devices, unless you use another routing device. Cox notes this distinction in its modem compatibility guidance.

Can you use your own router with your internet service?

Often, but compatibility depends on the provider, connection type, equipment, and service tier. Confirm that the provider allows the device and that it supports your broadband technology and plan speed. For services that require a modem, check that separately: router compatibility alone does not establish that a modem will work with the ISP.

Cox, for example, tells customers to verify certification and speed-plan support and recommends at least Wi-Fi 6 for a separate router. That is Cox-specific guidance, not a universal compatibility list or a requirement for every provider. Check your own provider’s current equipment information before buying. Choose between provider equipment and your own

Consideration Provider-supplied equipment Customer-owned equipment
Up-front cost May avoid a separate retail purchase; check for one-time equipment or setup fees. Requires an equipment purchase; the price depends on the device.
Recurring cost Check whether the bill includes a recurring equipment rental charge. Check whether using your own device removes the applicable rental charge; provider policies vary.
Compatibility Supplied for the provider’s service, though confirm it suits your needs. Verify provider approval, connection type, and speed-tier support before purchase.
Support and upkeep Ask the provider what support and software updates it supplies. You may be responsible for compatibility, security, updates, and device-related troubleshooting. Cox specifies these responsibilities for customers using their own devices.
Wi-Fi performance Depends on the equipment and the home’s layout and connected devices. Choose capabilities suited to your coverage and device needs; a more expensive router does not increase the broadband speed delivered by your ISP.

Compare the full cost and responsibilities over the period you expect to use the equipment. A one-time purchase may make sense if it replaces a recurring rental, but there is no universal break-even point: the relevant fees, device cost, and provider rules differ.

What to check before buying

  1. Find the equipment already in your home and determine whether it is a gateway or a separate modem and router.
  2. Check your provider’s current compatibility information for your service type and speed tier. Confirm whether you need a modem as well as a router.
  3. Compare the bill’s monthly broadband price and recurring equipment charges with the one-time costs for equipment, activation, and installation.
  4. Ask who handles software updates and device troubleshooting if you use your own equipment.
  5. Choose router features based on the coverage and connected-device needs of your home, rather than assuming a higher purchase price will improve the provider’s internet service.

Account for security and support if you own the router

Owning the equipment can also mean taking responsibility for its upkeep. The Federal Trade Commission recommends using WPA3 or WPA2 encryption, changing default administrator credentials, and keeping router software up to date. It advises checking whether an ISP automatically updates a router it supplies. The FTC explains: “WPA3 is the newer — and best — encryption available, but both will work to scramble your information.” FTC guidance on securing home Wi-Fi.
