Some services offer both, so the useful comparison is between their specific features, supported retailers, and availability where you live—not simply “extension versus app.”
How to choose between an extension and an app
- Mostly shop on a computer? Consider an extension that works on the browser and retailer sites you use. It can surface comparisons or coupon tools while you browse.
- Mostly shop on a phone? An app may make it easier to search across stores and receive deal or price-drop alerts in one place. Check whether it uses an in-app browser and whether you are comfortable shopping that way.
- Want both workflows? Check which functions actually carry across the vendor’s extension and app. A company offering both does not mean the features are identical.
As Honey puts it, “The extension goes with you to different stores whenever you’re on your computer. The app brings different stores to you in a single app whenever you’re on your phone.” That is Honey’s description of its own products, not a rule that applies to every tracker. Honey Help Center

What the formats and services actually offer
Price history, alerts, coupon testing, seller comparisons, and rewards are separate features. Before choosing a tool, identify which ones you want and confirm that they work for your products, stores, device, and country.

| Honey / PayPal Honey | Honey says its extension works with Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Opera, and may test or apply coupons at supported stores. It reports coverage of more than 30,000 sites when it has codes for those sites; this is a vendor-reported figure, not a measure of successful discounts. | Honey describes an app that brings stores together in a mobile shopping destination using an in-app browser. It says US members can use Droplist on the app and extension and describes Amazon shopping in its US app. | Honey’s help page lists app availability in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, India, and Spain. Availability and features can change, so check the current listing and local support. Honey Help Center |
| Capital One Shopping | Its help center says the extension searches for lower prices on Amazon products and tests community-sourced coupon codes at other retailers. | The app offers promo codes, Shopping Rewards, personalized deal alerts, product search across partner retailers, price-drop notifications, and comparison offers from other sellers, according to the company. | Capital One says its full suite is for US addresses; features outside the US may be limited, with increased functionality noted in Canada, the UK, and Australia. These are vendor descriptions, not independent tests or guarantees that a tool will find the cheapest offer. Honey says its Real Deal comparison weighs seller price, potential coupon savings, and the chance of PayPal Rewards points, but also says comparisons are unavailable for some products, some options may be missed, and its recommendation may not suit every buyer. For Amazon, Honey says it compares sellers, considers estimated shipping, and shows price history. Its product page cautions that displayed prices are illustrative and that discounts and availability vary. Treat any result as a lead to check, not proof of the lowest final price. Check coverage before relying on a tracker
A tracker can only compare the stores, products, and versions it recognizes. Coverage may differ by tool and category: Australian consumer organization CHOICE says larger services such as Zyft track prices at over 50,000 sellers, while smaller platforms such as Price Hipster show results from 250. Those figures were reported by CHOICE on March 14, 2025; they are not audited current counts and do not establish which service is more accurate. CHOICE’s tracker comparison
Honey likewise says it compares major retailers and other merchants it trusts, but acknowledges it may miss options and does not offer comparisons for every product. A broad seller count cannot tell you whether a tracker covers the exact item you want.
Verify the real price before you buy
A low listed price can stop being a good deal after shipping, membership pricing, or other conditions are included. CHOICE warns that tracker data may be outdated, that trackers will not necessarily find the best deal, and that shipping or delivery charges and retailer-membership discounts are usually not included. CHOICE’s tracker comparison
- Match the product. Confirm the exact model, size, color, condition, and included accessories. Similar names or photos do not prove listings are equivalent.
- Check the seller. Compare the retailer or marketplace seller and review the return terms. A different seller can mean different service or conditions.
- Add delivery and discounts. Check shipping charges, delivery region, membership-only pricing, and any coupon or rewards conditions that apply to you.
- Confirm at checkout. Open the retailer’s own listing and compare the current checkout total before ordering. A price-history chart shows past prices, not what a product will cost later.
Consider permissions, privacy, and location
Read the current permission prompts and privacy policy before installing a shopping extension. Capital One Shopping says it monitors products users view and purchase on ecommerce sites to send notifications and update prices, and that its extension needs permission to interact with data in web pages. That disclosure is specific to Capital One Shopping; do not assume another service collects or uses data in the same way. Capital One Shopping Help Center
Features also depend on country and device. Honey identifies some Droplist and Amazon functions as US-specific, while Capital One Shopping describes its full suite as available for US addresses and warns that features elsewhere may be limited. Verify current local availability and the particular feature you want instead of assuming that an app listing or extension download means every function is supported. What price trackers can—and cannot—establish
CHOICE’s March 14, 2025 review summarizes the limitation plainly: “Trackers can be useful for comparing prices and staying up-to-date on discounts, but their data can also be outdated and they won’t necessarily find you the best deal.” The reviewed sources do not establish a controlled comparison of savings or an independent speed or accuracy benchmark for extensions versus apps. Use alerts and price history to decide when to investigate; verify the actual offer before purchasing. CHOICE’s tracker comparison
