You can start playing tennis as an adult with no prior experience and very little equipment. Find a beginner lesson, clinic, or try-it event, then ask whether rackets and balls are provided. For your first session, comfortable clothes and court shoes may be all you need.

What do you need to start playing tennis?

Keep the first checklist short. USTA Florida recommends a beginner-friendly racket, court shoes, a can of balls, comfortable clothes, and water. But some beginner clinics and try-it events lend rackets and balls, so contact the provider before buying anything.

  • Clothes: Wear comfortable clothing that lets you move freely.
  • Shoes: Choose court shoes, and check the facility’s surface and footwear rules.
  • Racket and balls: Ask whether the class supplies them. If it does, try the lesson before choosing what to buy.
  • Water: Bring water for the session.

If you want to own a racket before your first class, a basic adult tennis racket is a reasonable starting category. The guidance here does not establish a particular brand, model, weight, string setup, grip size, or best-performing beginner racket. A can of balls can also wait: the instructor may supply them and select a ball to suit the class.

Which tennis ball should a beginner use?

Ask the instructor what the class uses rather than assuming every beginner should buy the same ball. USTA Florida describes several options: red balls are slower and lower-bouncing than orange balls and are suited to 36-foot courts; orange balls are slower and lower-bouncing than green balls and are used on 60-foot courts; green-dot balls have slightly reduced bounce and can be used for learning on full-sized courts; and yellow balls are typical on full-sized 78-foot courts. The right choice depends on the lesson and court setup.

How to find a beginner lesson or clinic

Look for a program that explicitly welcomes complete beginners or returning players. You can search through your local USTA section, parks department, recreation center, or tennis facility. USTA’s adult tennis page links to court and coach discovery. USTA Florida also points players to its places-to-play directory and recommends checking the facility’s current schedule directly.

Introductory instruction can cover the grip, stance, basic forehand and backhand, serve, court positioning, and scoring. A beginner-labelled group lesson or clinic is one practical way to learn those fundamentals alongside others at a similar stage. You do not need to know the rules before signing up.

Questions to ask before you register

  • Is the class suitable for someone who has never played, or is it intended for returning players?
  • Are rackets and balls supplied?
  • What shoes are allowed on the court surface?
  • What are the schedule, fee, location, and court-access arrangements?
  • Is there a follow-on clinic, practice group, or social-play option?

Offerings, costs, schedules, and court access vary by location and facility, so confirm the details directly rather than relying on a national price or schedule.

What a local program can look like

USTA Alabama’s Ready Set Tennis is one regional example, not a universal lesson format: its page describes a four-hour instructional program for beginners and returning players. Its Level 1 Ready to Learn registration includes four or more hours with a tennis instructor and an adult racket. Other providers may organize and equip their classes differently.

Your first steps, in order

  1. Find an introductory option. Search for an adult beginner clinic, introductory class, or try-it event through a local USTA section, parks department, recreation center, or tennis facility.
  2. Check what is included. Ask about loaner rackets and balls, permitted shoes, schedule, fee, and court access.
  3. Go with the essentials. Wear comfortable clothing and court shoes, and bring water. Use loaner equipment if it is available.
  4. Learn the basics with guidance. Work on grip, stance, groundstrokes, serving, court positioning, and scoring through instruction and practice.
  5. Keep playing. Continue with another clinic, practice with friends, or join a social program. If you later want organized competition, USTA’s league pathway involves creating an account and self-rating for an NTRP rating before choosing a league.

How to choose between local programs

When you have more than one option, compare the details that affect whether you can attend and keep playing. Official program listings describe different formats and inclusions, but they do not establish that one class format produces better results than another.

  • Beginner fit: Does the program welcome first-timers or returning players?
  • Instruction: What does the class cover, and what is its format and level of instructor contact?
  • Equipment: Are rackets and balls supplied, or should you bring your own?
  • Practical details: Do the location, schedule, total cost, and court arrangements work for you?
  • Next step: Can you continue with clinics, practice, or social play afterward?

Learn at a comfortable pace

USTA’s Tennis 101 for Adults manual describes itself as an adaptable instructional resource and emphasizes the value of a positive first experience. Use a beginner class to get started, then give yourself time to practice the skills and scoring as you play. You do not need to assemble a full kit or master tennis before your first session.
