PSI measures pressure; GPM measures water flow. Pressure helps loosen or strip dirt, while flow rinses loosened dirt away. Both ratings matter, and the right balance depends on the job, the surface, and the nozzle you use.
What PSI and GPM mean
- PSI means pounds per square inch. It describes pressure: the force with which water is delivered.
- GPM means gallons per minute. It describes the volume of water flowing through the washer.
Briggs & Stratton illustrates the difference with a spray bottle, which can deliver a forceful stream with little water, and an unrestricted garden hose, which moves more water with less force. In cleaning, pressure supplies much of the scrubbing or stripping action; water flow helps carry loosened dirt away. Simpson Cleaning describes the two as complementary rather than competing measures.

That distinction explains why PSI alone does not tell you how quickly a washer will clean. A machine’s results also depend on its flow, the task, the surface, and how the spray is set up.

Read PSI and GPM separately
Compare both numbers to understand whether a washer emphasizes pressure or water volume. For a large surface, Simpson advises considering GPM: more flow can help rinse a broader area and may help finish the work sooner. That does not make high flow a universal substitute for the pressure or setup a particular task requires.

Use cleaning units as a shorthand
Some manufacturers express a comparison figure as cleaning units (CU), calculated as PSI × GPM. Briggs & Stratton calls its corresponding measure cleaning power (CP), using maximum PSI × GPM. These are manufacturer comparison measures, not a complete or standardized independent prediction of how quickly a washer will clean every surface.

Mi-T-M uses these example ratings to show the limits of the product: the two combinations have the same calculated CU, but a different pressure-and-flow balance. Equal CU does not establish equal real-world cleaning performance.

Why the nozzle and distance matter
The washer’s maximum PSI is not necessarily the pressure you should apply to the surface. Mi-T-M explains that nozzle orifice and spray angle affect the pressure delivered at the work. Briggs & Stratton also describes task-specific spray patterns, including lower-pressure, higher-flow settings for more delicate cleaning. A wider spray or greater distance can reduce the force reaching a surface, as described in the cited Simpson manual.

- Use only nozzle types and sizes compatible with your washer.
- Choose a spray pattern and working distance appropriate to the surface, following the washer’s instructions.
- If the material or finish is delicate, do not assume that the machine’s maximum rating is an appropriate setting.
Match the washer and setup to the job
There is no universal PSI or GPM threshold in these manufacturer examples that determines the right washer for every surface. Simpson distinguishes household use from job-site use and points readers toward the needs of the task; it also notes the value of higher GPM for large-area cleaning. Briggs & Stratton offers examples of task settings, not universal prescriptions:

For a large flat area, check whether the washer supports a compatible surface-cleaning attachment and whether its flow is suitable. Mi-T-M describes rotary surface cleaners for large flat surfaces and rotating nozzles for specified tasks; compatibility and the accessory’s ratings still matter.

Follow the manual for the exact washer you own. The Simpson PS60842 manual, for example, specifies a cold-water supply with a minimum of 20 PSI and 5 GPM for that model. It also warns against running the unit for more than two minutes without pulling the trigger because the pump may overheat. Those supply requirements and operating limits should not be assumed to apply to other models.

The same manual warns against directing the discharge at people, unprotected skin, eyes, pets, or animals. Keep the spray pointed away from them and follow your model’s safety instructions.
