In Windows 10 and Windows 11, pressing Shift five times toggles Sticky Keys on or off. Sticky Keys lets you enter keyboard shortcuts one key at a time. A confirmation pop-up or sound may appear on some setups, but Microsoft’s current shortcut reference guarantees the toggle—not a particular prompt.
What does pressing Shift five times do?
It turns Sticky Keys on or off. Microsoft lists “Shift five times” as the shortcut for this toggle in its Windows keyboard shortcuts for accessibility reference, which covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Sticky Keys is an accessibility feature for entering commands that normally require more than one key to be held down at once. For example, with Sticky Keys enabled, you can enter Ctrl+S one key at a time instead of pressing Ctrl and S simultaneously. Microsoft describes the feature as letting you press commands that use multiple keys “one key at a time” in its guide to making input devices easier to use.
Will Windows show a pop-up or play a sound?
Do not rely on a particular prompt. A Microsoft community answer from 2018 describes a beep and prompt, but that historical account does not establish that every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 setup displays them. The dependable behavior in Microsoft’s current shortcut reference is that five Shift presses toggle Sticky Keys.
How to check or change Sticky Keys in Settings
If you want to confirm whether the feature is on or adjust its settings, open Accessibility settings with the Windows logo key+U, then select Keyboard. The labels vary by Windows version:
