For occasional relief of mild dry-eye symptoms on an otherwise healthy eye surface, preserved artificial tears may be enough. If you use lubricating drops frequently and over the long term—more than four times a day is one example—preservative-free tears are generally recommended. The right choice also depends on your symptoms, contact lenses, packaging preferences, and the product’s instructions.
How often you use drops is the main starting point
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) distinguishes occasional use from frequent, chronic use. Preserved artificial tears may be sufficient for mild dry eye when the ocular surface is otherwise healthy. For frequent chronic use, the AAO generally recommends nonpreserved tears; its example is more than four applications per day. Mayo Clinic similarly describes preservative-free drops as generally recommended for use more than four times daily or for moderate to very dry eyes.

These are general recommendations, not a diagnosis or a rule that every preserved product will harm every user. If you need drops often, or symptoms persist or worsen, ask an eye-care professional whether your symptoms need evaluation and which formulation suits you.
What the preservative does—and what the concern is
Preservatives help limit microbial growth in multi-dose eye-drop containers after opening. A single-use vial that is discarded after one use does not need a preservative for that packaging purpose. Preservative-free options also include some multi-dose bottles with specialized dispensing systems.
#1 Best Overall
- LASTING RELIEF: Original strength lubricating formula soothes mild symptoms of eye dryness
- PRESERVATIVE-FREE: Made with zero preservatives to relieve mild symptoms of dry eyes including burning, irritation, and discomfort
- FAST ACTING: Instantly moisturizes and lubricates
- RELIABLE PROTECTION: Active ingredients provide lasting lubrication for dry eyes
- GENTLE: Safe to use as often as needed. Great for dry, sensitive eyes
TFOS DEWS II identifies benzalkonium chloride (BAK) as the most frequently used preservative in eye-drop preparations and reviews laboratory and clinical evidence of possible ocular-surface toxicity and adverse changes with chronic topical exposure. That evidence supports caution with repeated long-term exposure; it does not show that every preserved lubricant causes injury in every person. Preservatives and formulations vary, so consider the product and your use pattern rather than treating all preserved drops as interchangeable.
Compare the practical trade-offs
| Consideration | Preserved tears | Preservative-free tears |
|---|---|---|
| Common packaging | Often multi-dose bottles; preservative helps discourage microbial growth after opening. | Single-use vials or specialized multi-dose dispensing bottles. |
| Use pattern | May suit occasional use for mild dry eye with a healthy ocular surface. | Generally recommended for frequent, chronic use, such as more than four times daily. |
| Handling | A multi-dose bottle can be convenient. Follow its opening and discard instructions. | Single-use vials mean handling a fresh unit for each use; specialized multi-dose options avoid that format. |
| Cost and convenience | Often less costly, according to AAO consumer guidance. | Single-dose packs are typically more expensive; packaging also affects convenience and environmental impact. |
| Contact lenses | Check the specific label; preservative status alone does not establish lens compatibility. | Check the specific label as well; preservative-free does not automatically mean safe to use over lenses. |
Check contact-lens directions and package handling
If you plan to put drops in while wearing contact lenses, choose a product clearly labeled for use with lenses. Other drops may instruct you to remove lenses and wait before putting them back in. Follow the directions on the particular package; do not infer compatibility from the words “preservative-free.”

The AAO notes that most artificial tears may have comparable efficacy, while also pointing out important inconsistencies in the underlying studies. That evidence does not establish a definitive brand ranking. Compare the formulation, package format, label directions, and how practical the product is for your routine. If one product does not relieve symptoms or you find yourself needing drops continually, seek professional advice rather than relying on repeated brand changes.

Know when drops are not enough
This comparison applies to lubricating artificial tears for dry-eye symptoms—not prescription medicines, redness-relief drops, antibiotic drops, or every ophthalmic preparation. Ingredients and directions differ among products.
Contact an eye doctor promptly for pronounced redness, pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, or discharge; these can signal a serious eye problem. Persistent or worsening dry-eye symptoms also merit professional assessment.
