If you want a foldable before Apple’s first foldable iPhone goes on sale, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is already available. It also has a published weight and dimensions, a 4:3 inner screen Samsung says suits reading and immersive viewing, and Android foldable software. The trade-off: Apple’s iPhone Duo may be a better fit if you prefer iOS and Apple’s ecosystem, but its preorders are not scheduled to open until October 16, 2026.
Three reasons to consider the Galaxy Z Fold8 first
1. Its weight and folded dimensions are published
Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 at 201 g, 9.7 mm thick when folded and 4.5 mm when unfolded. Samsung calls it the lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet. Apple’s announcement gives the iPhone Duo’s screen sizes but not its weight, so there is no official weight comparison yet. The Fold8 is therefore the one of the two for which you can check a published weight before choosing.

If you want magnetic wireless charging or magnetic accessories, Samsung says its official magnetic cases align the phone with compatible chargers and accessories. Check that a case listing names the Galaxy Z Fold8 specifically before buying; compatibility should not be assumed from a similar-looking Fold model.

The Fold8 has a 7.6-inch main display and a 5.5-inch cover display. Samsung describes the main screen’s 4:3 shape as suited to immersive viewing, reading and gaming, while positioning the cover screen for tasks such as messaging, browsing and short-form video. That gives you a practical split: use the larger panel when you want more room, and the cover display for quick interactions without opening the phone.

Samsung also describes Galaxy AI and Gemini experiences optimized for its foldable displays. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent findings about how well the software performs. If Android multitasking and Google services are already part of your routine, the Fold8’s software environment may feel like the more natural extension of it.
3. You can buy it before iPhone Duo preorders begin
Samsung announced general availability for the Fold8 beginning August 7, 2026, through Samsung.com, carriers, retailers and Samsung Experience Stores, with an initial rollout to 106 markets. Availability can vary by market and seller. Apple has scheduled iPhone Duo preorders for October 16, 2026, and availability for October 23, 2026. As of October 3, that makes the Fold8 the option to consider if you want to buy a foldable before Apple’s preorder window.

Where iPhone Duo may be the better choice
Apple’s iPhone Duo is its first foldable iPhone, running iOS 27 with the A20 Pro chip, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. Apple lists a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display and a 5.4-inch outer display. Apple says the two displays share an aspect ratio for continuity, and that the inner screen’s nano-texture finish is intended to reduce glare and crease visibility.

Apple also describes a grade 5 titanium design and dual-battery architecture. These are announced specifications and feature claims, not proof of battery life or long-term durability.

There is no independent testing here to establish which phone lasts longer, takes better photos, has the more durable hinge or makes its crease less visible in everyday use. Treat the display-finish and hardware descriptions as reasons to consider the Duo, not as tested outcomes.

- Choose the Fold8 first if you want a foldable now, prefer Android, or value having an official weight and folded thickness to consider before buying.
- Wait for the iPhone Duo if iOS and Apple’s services matter more to you, or if its announced screen continuity and display finish are priorities worth waiting to assess.

One practical limitation for stylus users: the Galaxy Z Fold8 does not support S Pen. Samsung lists IP48, Armor Aluminum and titanium layers among the Fold8’s hardware details, but those specifications alone do not establish real-world durability against drops, dust or long-term hinge wear.
