Pragmatic Domain-Driven Design in Laravel with Laravel Boost

Laravel Boost adds Laravel-aware guidance and tools to AI-assisted development, but your team still has to define and maintain its domain boundaries.

Laravel Boost can give AI coding agents Laravel-aware guidance, tools, and documentation; it cannot decide your domain boundaries or validate a DDD architecture. Use it to help agents follow conventions your team has already chosen, and adopt a more explicit domain structure only where it makes important business rules easier to understand and test.

What does Domain-Driven Design mean in a Laravel app?

Domain-Driven Design (DDD) is a way to organize software around the business concepts and rules it must represent. In practice, the useful question is not whether a Laravel application has the “right” folder names. It is whether the code makes important rules visible, keeps related behavior together, and lets the team change the system without losing track of what the business means.

For example, an order workflow might have rules about when an order can be confirmed, what must be true before it is paid, or how cancellation affects its items. If those rules are scattered across controllers, model callbacks, and queued jobs, a developer has to reconstruct the behavior from many places. A more domain-focused design tries to make the rules easier to locate and reason about.

The following are design choices, not requirements imposed by Laravel or Boost. Start with the smallest change that makes a real rule clearer; do not move every model into a new directory simply to make the tree look more “DDD.”

Keep business decisions close to the concepts they govern

When a rule belongs to one business concept, consider giving that concept a clear method or collaborator that expresses the decision. A controller can validate the request and coordinate the application flow, while domain behavior can remain separate from HTTP concerns. That separation is most useful when the rule is meaningful outside one route or needs focused tests.

Separate business meaning from persistence where it pays off

Eloquent is often a practical fit for straightforward CRUD. For complex rules, weigh whether putting persistence details and business behavior in the same model makes the code harder to understand or test. You can keep Eloquent in the domain-facing code, introduce a mapping boundary, or use another approach; each adds different costs. A persistence abstraction is not automatically beneficial if it only duplicates simple database operations.

Use boundaries to clarify ownership, not to multiply layers

A bounded context is a part of a system with a coherent set of terms and rules. In a Laravel codebase, a team may express such boundaries with namespaces, modules, or simply well-defined responsibilities in a conventional application structure. Separate a context when the distinction helps people work with the software; avoid creating layers that have no clear job.

Should domain models live outside Laravel’s conventional folders?

There is no universally best location. Laravel’s familiar organization can minimize indirection for a small or mostly CRUD application. A more explicit structure can make business boundaries easier to see as the application’s rules grow, but it asks the team to maintain additional conventions and understand more layers.

Consideration Conventional Laravel organization More explicit domain structure
Business boundaries Can be less visible when related rules are spread across general-purpose folders. Can make ownership and domain responsibilities more apparent if the boundaries are coherent.
Indirection Usually fewer layers to navigate. May add namespaces, application services, or mapping code that developers must follow.
Testing domain behavior May require Laravel or database setup when behavior is tightly coupled to framework models. Can make isolated tests easier if business rules are genuinely separated from framework concerns.
Persistence coupling Eloquent integration is direct and convenient. Can isolate persistence, but mapping and abstraction have a maintenance cost.
Keeping the design consistent Benefits from Laravel familiarity and convention. Depends on the team consistently applying its own boundaries and rules.

These are trade-offs, not measured performance results. A reasonable progression is to keep ordinary Laravel conventions where they work, then introduce a clearer boundary around a domain area when duplicated or hard-to-test business rules create a concrete problem.

What does Laravel Boost add to an AI coding workflow?

Laravel documents Boost as a way to supply AI agents with Laravel-specific guidance and capabilities. Its guide describes three context mechanisms worth distinguishing: guidelines are loaded up front, skills are activated when needed, and project rules capture conventions specific to an application. Boost also includes a built-in MCP server and an API for Laravel ecosystem documentation. See the Laravel Boost guide.

Laravel says Boost provides “over 15 specialized tools” and “over 17,000 pieces of vectorized Laravel ecosystem documentation.” Those are Laravel’s published product-capability figures, not independent measurements of developer productivity. Boost can provide context and tools to an agent; it does not itself enforce DDD boundaries, guarantee correct domain logic, or prove that a particular folder layout is sound.

Put team-specific domain conventions in project rules

Use project rules to tell an agent what your application means by its domain terms and how your team expects code to be organized. Useful guidance might identify the owner of a business rule, distinguish domain behavior from request handling, describe when Eloquent is acceptable, and point out patterns the team deliberately avoids. Keep those rules concrete and aligned with the code: generic instructions cannot substitute for an agreed design.

Guidelines provide baseline guidance without waiting for a skill to be called; skills are available for more focused tasks when activated. This distinction helps teams avoid treating every piece of domain context as either a global instruction or a tool-specific capability.

How do you install Boost and check compatibility?

The documented workflow uses Composer followed by php artisan boost:install. The installation guide states that Boost can be installed in Laravel Framework versions 10.x through 13.x and says PHP 8.1 or higher. However, package metadata surfaced for a release lists a PHP ^8.2 constraint. Because package requirements can vary by release, inspect the constraints for the exact Boost version you plan to install rather than relying on the installation page’s PHP statement alone. The Laravel 13.x installation documentation describes the installation flow; the Boost guide lists documentation API coverage for Laravel Framework 10.x, 11.x, 12.x, and 13.x.

  1. Check the requirements for the exact Boost release against your PHP and Laravel versions.

  2. Add the Boost package with Composer using the package and version appropriate to your project.

  3. Run php artisan boost:install and follow the installer’s prompts for your project and agent setup.

  4. Review the generated or selected guidance and add your application’s own domain language and conventions before relying on an agent to make structural changes.

Does Boost work with a non-standard DDD structure?

Do not assume that a Laravel-aware tool automatically discovers every model wherever a team chooses to put it. A Laravel Boost issue opened on January 23, 2026 reports that model discovery scans only app/ and may miss Eloquent models in non-standard DDD paths. The issue’s author says the DatabaseSchema tool still reads the database while the ApplicationInfo resource may return an empty models array. This is a reported issue, not a guarantee about every Boost release; check the current status of issue #460 and verify behavior on your installed version.

If your application stores models outside conventional locations, test the information and tools your agent actually receives rather than assuming discovery is complete. Keep important domain rules in explicit project guidance, and have an experienced developer review generated changes—especially changes to persistence or business invariants.

A practical way to combine DDD and Boost

  1. Choose one business workflow with a real source of complexity, such as order confirmation or subscription cancellation.

  2. Write down its terms, invariants, and ownership in language the team uses. Identify which rules are business decisions and which are HTTP, persistence, or integration details.

  3. Keep the existing Laravel organization where it remains clear. Introduce a domain boundary only where it improves the workflow’s readability, changeability, or testability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Add the resulting conventions to project rules so agents have the same architectural context as contributors.

  5. Use Boost to assist with Laravel-specific implementation and documentation lookup, then verify behavior with tests and code review. Treat its output as a proposal, not as architectural validation.

This approach avoids two common extremes: forcing every Laravel application into a large DDD template, and expecting an AI tool to infer business boundaries that the team has not defined.
