PGlite makes it possible to practice PostgreSQL in a browser without first installing a database server: it runs PostgreSQL compiled to WebAssembly and can power an interactive SQL editor embedded in a page. That can reduce setup friction for interview practice, but it does not establish that the exercise matches every employer’s database environment or that using it improves interview results.
What putting PostgreSQL in WebAssembly means
PGlite is, in the project’s words, “a WASM Postgres build packaged into a TypeScript/JavaScript client library.” It runs in browsers, Node.js, and Bun without other dependencies; it is PostgreSQL compiled to WebAssembly, not a Linux virtual machine. The project describes its gzipped WASM build as under 3 MB, a vendor claim rather than an independent size benchmark. PGlite: What is PGlite

For browser-based practice, the practical result is a database session that runs in the page. You can keep a session temporary in memory or use IndexedDB-backed persistence so data can remain available in the browser between sessions. PGlite: What is PGlite PGlite: Getting started

How the interactive practice setup works
The official PGlite REPL component provides an interactive session with WebAssembly PostgreSQL embedded in a page. It includes CodeMirror editing, autocomplete for table and column names, input history, and support for selected d psql describe commands. It can be embedded as a React component or a web component. A simple practice workflow is to start a database, create a small schema and seed it with rows, then use the REPL to answer questions against that data. The official getting-started guide demonstrates browser setup with the @electric-sql/pglite package or a CDN import, and shows both an in-memory instance created with new PGlite() and an IndexedDB-backed instance using an idb:// path. PGlite: Getting started
- Create the database: initialize PGlite in the browser, choosing in-memory storage for a disposable session or IndexedDB persistence if you want to keep the practice database.
- Prepare sample data: create tables and insert a compact, understandable set of rows. The getting-started guide demonstrates table creation, inserts, and selecting rows.
- Work through prompts: write a query in the embedded REPL and inspect the result. Editing support, autocomplete, and input history help with the mechanics of iteration.
- Expand the exercises: PGlite’s examples include parameterized queries, PL/pgSQL, and full-text search. These are useful examples, not a complete SQL interview curriculum. PGlite Examples
Choose the right query method
PGlite’s API distinguishes between .query and .exec. Use .query to execute one statement; it can accept parameters. Use .exec when you need to execute one or more statements together, but it does not support parameters. For values supplied by a user, the getting-started guide recommends parameterized queries rather than inserting those values directly into SQL text. PGlite: Getting started PGlite API
For example, a parameterized lookup can keep the SQL structure separate from the value being searched for:

Use .exec for setup scripts that contain multiple statements, such as creating tables and inserting seed rows. Use .query for an individual exercise query or a statement that needs bound values.
What PGlite can—and cannot—solve for interview prep
PGlite addresses one part of preparation: getting a PostgreSQL session running with little setup. Browser-based practice can make it easier to repeat a query, inspect results, and continue from saved data when using IndexedDB. It does not by itself choose good interview questions, teach a complete curriculum, or demonstrate that a candidate is ready for a particular hiring process.
The official examples show selected PostgreSQL capabilities, including parameterized queries, PL/pgSQL, and full-text search. Their presence demonstrates examples, not coverage of every topic an interviewer might test. Select exercises based on the role and the skills you need to practice rather than treating the examples list as a syllabus. PGlite Examples

Nor do the cited project documents establish identical behavior across every production PostgreSQL version, extension set, or employer’s interview platform. If compatibility is important, check the target environment and validate the relevant SQL features there. PGlite is most useful as a low-friction practice environment, not as proof of exact production parity. PGlite: What is PGlite PGlite REPL Component PGlite API
