PPTP Explained: What Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol Does

PPTP tunnels PPP packets over IP using a TCP control connection and enhanced GRE. The protocol does not itself guarantee encryption; security depends on PPP configuration.

Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) carries Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) packets across an IP network. It creates a tunnel for PPP traffic; PPTP itself does not automatically encrypt that traffic. The protection available depends on the PPP authentication and data-protection methods used by a particular implementation.

What does PPTP stand for?

PPTP stands for Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol. Its original specification describes a way to transport PPP packets across an IP network without changing PPP itself. It uses a client-server architecture intended to separate network-access functions and support virtual private networks (VPNs). RFC 2637

How does a PPTP VPN work?

PPTP separates connection management from the tunneled data. A TCP control connection between PPTP peers uses port 1723. The PPP packets travel separately inside enhanced Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE), which carries sequencing and acknowledgment information. RFC 2637

This distinction matters: establishing a tunnel is not the same as encrypting its contents. RFC 2637 assigns user-data security and peer authentication to PPP. Those protections depend on the authentication and encryption methods selected by the implementation, rather than being guaranteed by PPTP alone.

What is PPTP’s status?

RFC 2637 was published in July 1999 as an Informational RFC. The RFC Editor states that it does not specify an Internet standard. Microsoft also maintains a PPTP protocol profile; its version table lists revision 18.0 dated April 23, 2024. These documents describe the protocol and a vendor profile, but neither makes PPTP an Internet Standards Track protocol. RFC 2637; Microsoft’s [MS-PTPT] introduction

What security and connection problems should you know about?

Security depends on configuration

Microsoft warns that organizations using MS-CHAP v2 without encapsulation together with PPTP tunnels are in a potentially nonsecure configuration. That warning applies to the configuration Microsoft names; it should not be generalized into a claim that every possible PPTP arrangement has identical security properties. GRE filtering can prevent connectivity

Because PPTP carries tunneled data using GRE, a network or internet service provider that blocks GRE can disrupt a PPTP connection. Microsoft identifies GRE blocking by ISPs as a common PPTP connectivity problem. Microsoft’s [MS-IPHTTPS] overview
