An Australian owner reported seeing two Tesla Powerwall 2 units draw 150–200 W from the grid or solar when their batteries were full or empty. That reading may reflect power used to keep control systems ready, or small imports that appear as household loads and inverter output change. The available account does not establish Tesla’s specified standby consumption or show whether this particular installation has a fault.
What the Australian owner saw
In a September 2, 2026 Reddit post, an Australian owner wrote: “We have 2x powerwall 2’s and when they are empty or full I can still see them using 150-200W of power from the grid or solar.” The owner said the home was exporting solar, that calibration had recently occurred, and asked whether an installer should check the system. The original discussion does not provide a verified time-series measurement or enough system details to diagnose the reading.

A report published by The Cool Down and republished by Yahoo Tech on October 5, 2026 described the commenters’ main view as ordinary standby use rather than clear evidence of a problem. The reported 150–200 W is one owner’s observation with two units, not a published statistic or a general Powerwall 2 specification. Yahoo Tech’s report attributes possible explanations to the discussion, not to an official Tesla statement.
Why a battery may draw power while idle
Controls and readiness
A home battery can use electricity to monitor conditions and manage its operation even when it is not actively charging or discharging. The reported article presents control electronics and readiness as plausible reasons for standby consumption. One commenter estimated that control circuits and fans might account for about 100 W per battery, but that is a community estimate—not a Tesla specification or a measurement confirmed for this system. Another commenter suggested the system needs to stay on so it can respond without delay.

Small imports can be transient
A displayed import may not mean a steady load of the same size. Household demand can change faster than a battery, inverter, or monitoring system responds, briefly showing energy drawn from the grid even when the battery is full. SolarQuotes explains this general behavior in its guide to small imports shown by energy monitoring. That context does not establish that monitoring behavior caused the reading in this owner’s installation.
Temperature is not confirmed as the cause
The Reddit discussion raised heating or cooling as another possibility. The owner described ambient temperatures of about 7–18°C and said the observed use was similar overnight. The exchange does not establish whether thermal management contributed.

What the report does—and does not—show
- Reported: one owner saw a 150–200 W draw with two Powerwall 2 units when the batteries were full or empty.
- Plausible, not specified: standby controls and readiness may consume power, but the cited material gives no verified standby-wattage figure for this configuration.
- Possible, not diagnosed: changing household loads and system response can contribute to small apparent imports; the account does not prove that this explains the reported reading.
- Unresolved: the sources do not identify the system’s firmware, settings, metering arrangement, or the outcome of a Tesla service assessment.
Because those details and a reliable time-series measurement are missing, the report cannot determine whether this installation needs service. It also cannot support declaring the system definitively normal or faulty.

How to interpret a similar reading
Treat an instantaneous app or monitoring value as a clue, not by itself as proof of a continuous standby load. The useful distinction is whether the figure persists over time in reliable measurements or fluctuates as household demand and system response change. If the concern remains, the installation-specific details and measurements are what an installer or service assessment would need to evaluate; the available report does not provide a diagnostic threshold.
