PowerView for Linux: What Its Python Tools Can Reveal

“PowerView for Linux” usually means one of two separate Python projects—not a Linux edition of the original PowerShell script. Here is what each documents and how to interpret domain-enumeration results.

There is no single, official “PowerView for Linux.” The name usually refers to separate Python projects inspired by the original PowerView, a PowerShell script for Active Directory reconnaissance. In authorized assessments, these tools query directory data—such as users, groups, computers, policies, and trusts—subject to the account’s permissions and the services it can reach.

Is there a Linux version of PowerView?

Not as a direct Linux edition of the original PowerView. The original is PowerView.ps1, a PowerShell script. Two distinct Python projects are commonly associated with Linux use:

  • PowerView.py calls itself an alternative to PowerView.ps1 and aims to provide an interactive session without repeated LDAP authentication. Its project documentation describes it as a Python project, not an official continuation of the original. PowerView.py on PyPI
  • PywerView describes itself as a separate Python rewrite and GNU/Linux Active Directory reconnaissance tool for penetration-testing assignments. Its project page says it is based on ldap3 and Impacket. PywerView project

The similar names do not mean the projects are interchangeable, maintained by the same team, or command-compatible with PowerView.ps1. Check the documentation for the specific project and version you intend to use.

How do hackers enumerate Active Directory domains from Linux?

In an authorized assessment, domain enumeration means making queries to discover directory objects and relationships that the current account is permitted to see. A Linux tool may connect to Active Directory over LDAP or use other reachable services; the results reflect the credentials, network access, directory configuration, and query scope in that environment.

  1. Confirm authorization and scope. Establish which domain, hosts, accounts, and query types are in scope. Avoid write, administrative, or relay-related functions unless they are explicitly authorized.
  2. Choose a collection method. Use a targeted LDAP-oriented project for directory queries, or an SMB workflow tool when the task concerns SMB-reachable hosts and shares. These tools expose different surfaces rather than providing a universal view of the domain.
  3. Query specific object types. Depending on the tool, that can include users, computers, groups, organizational units, domain controllers, DNS records, policies, trusts, and permissions.
  4. Interpret results as a view, not a complete inventory. A successful query shows data available through that account and connection. It does not prove that every object, attribute, or relationship was collected.

Enumeration is discovery, not a guarantee of access or a complete map. Results can be incomplete when an account lacks visibility, a service is unreachable, or the collector does not request or support a particular object or attribute.

What can PowerView.py enumerate?

PowerView.py’s module documentation lists a broad set of LDAP and Active Directory operations. Its listed discovery functions include:

  • Object access-control lists (ACLs) and owners
  • Group Policy Objects (GPOs), trusts, and Active Directory Certificate Services (ADCS) information
  • Service-account and computer-related enumeration

The project’s module index also includes write or administrative operations. A function appearing in the same tool does not make it read-only: review the command and its effects before using it, and restrict activity to the authorization you have. The list is the project’s documented capability surface, not a promise that every query will return data in every domain. See the PowerView.py module documentation.

Examples documented by the project

The PyPI documentation shows queries for domain users, selected properties, filters, counts, and output formatting. It says most original modules are available, while noting that some flags differ. That is not exact compatibility with PowerView.ps1; consult the installed version’s own help and documentation rather than assuming a PowerShell command or flag will work unchanged.

PowerView.py’s package page lists installation routes including pip, pipx, uv, Nix, and a manual clone-and-install route. It identifies libkrb5-dev as a dependency for GSSAPI support and cautions that some Kerberos functions do not yet work well. Availability and instructions may change with package releases; these documented options are not a guarantee that installation or every authentication method will work on a particular Linux distribution. What does PywerView cover?

PywerView describes enumeration of users, computers, domain and local groups, and group members. Its project page establishes its stated goal and implementation basis, but does not provide a complete, current feature-by-feature comparison with PowerView.py or establish parity with every function in the original PowerView.ps1. Treat it as its own project and verify the supported operations in its documentation.

PowerView.py vs PywerView: what is the difference?

Project Implementation and stated purpose Documented scope and caveats
PowerView.py Python alternative to the original PowerView.ps1; aims for an interactive session without repeated LDAP authentication. Documents LDAP and related Active Directory operations, including users, computers, groups, OUs, DNS, ACLs, GPOs, trusts, and ADCS. Some flags differ from the original; some Kerberos functions are noted as not working well. Project package page and module documentation
PywerView Separate Python rewrite; describes itself as a GNU/Linux reconnaissance tool based on ldap3 and Impacket. Its project page describes enumeration of users, computers, domain/local groups, and members; it does not establish a complete current parity comparison. Project page

Choose based on the documented operations and authentication approach you need, then verify current compatibility in the project’s own documentation. A shared lineage or similar name is not evidence of identical commands, coverage, or maintenance status.

How do related tools fit?

NetExec: SMB-oriented workflows

NetExec’s documentation describes SMB enumeration workflows for hosts, null or guest sessions, shares, domain users and groups, and password policy. It assumes a Kali host on an internal network. This makes it a related workflow tool for SMB discovery, not PowerView under another name; the documentation is a procedure index, not proof of results in any particular environment. How to interpret enumeration output responsibly

  • Keep collection within scope. Directory tools may include functions that change objects or perform other sensitive actions; discovery permission does not automatically authorize those operations.
  • Record the context. Note the account used, domain and hosts in scope, reachable services, tool version, and query types so findings can be understood and reproduced.
  • Distinguish absence from lack of visibility. An empty result can mean an object was not present, but can also reflect permissions, connectivity, filters, or unsupported queries.
  • Validate important relationships. Treat output as evidence from a particular query and collection path, not proof that all domain objects and relationships have been captured.
