Amazon S3 Lifecycle can reduce eligible objects’ storage charges, but it cannot guarantee a 40% reduction in your total S3 bill. AWS announced on July 16, 2026, that Standard-IA and One Zone-IA can offer up to 40% lower storage costs than S3 Standard. That is an upper bound on the storage portion for qualifying data—not a blanket bill discount. Your actual result depends on the region, object sizes and count, access and retrieval activity, transition requests, and retention.
What S3 Lifecycle does—and what the 40% means
S3 Lifecycle rules apply actions to objects as they reach defined ages or match configured filters. A rule can transition eligible objects to another storage class or expire them. AWS’s July 16, 2026 announcement says Standard-IA and One Zone-IA offer “up to 40% lower storage costs than S3 Standard while still providing millisecond access when needed.” Read AWS’s announcement.

The claim concerns storage charges for eligible objects. It does not mean the whole S3 bill falls by 40%: requests, retrieval, data transfer, minimum-duration charges, and other services may remain or increase. Actual rates vary by AWS Region, so use the current Amazon S3 pricing page or AWS Pricing Calculator for a workload-specific estimate.

Calculate storage savings with the actual arithmetic
Compare the same eligible quantity of data over the same period. Use the regional rates that apply to your bucket and compare the storage line items:

Storage savings percentage = (baseline Standard storage charge − destination storage charge) ÷ baseline Standard storage charge × 100.
| Illustration | Storage charge | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible data in Standard | $100 | Baseline |
| Same eligible data at a full 40% storage discount | $60 | $40 less on the storage line |
This hypothetical shows the arithmetic, not an AWS price quote or a forecast for a complete bill. To estimate net savings, add transition request costs, retrieval charges, minimum-duration or early-deletion charges, applicable small-object billing rules, and relevant overhead. A policy may also produce less than the maximum discount because not all objects qualify or because access activity changes the economics. Without your Region, object count and sizes, retention, and retrieval profile, no universal dollar estimate is reliable.

Check object size, duration, and transition timing
Small objects and transition requests
AWS documentation says the default behavior prevents transitions for objects smaller than 128 KB unless a size filter or supported transition behavior permits them. Transition requests are charged per object, so moving many small objects may cost more than the storage reduction saves. Review the rule’s filters and the current S3 Lifecycle transition considerations before enabling transitions.

Minimum storage durations
AWS currently lists minimum durations of 30 days for Standard-IA and One Zone-IA, 90 days for Glacier Instant Retrieval and Glacier Flexible Retrieval, and 180 days for Deep Archive. Moving or deleting an object before the applicable minimum is met can incur a prorated charge. Check the current storage-class details and regional prices when choosing a destination.

Glacier transition billing begins when the rule is satisfied
Glacier Flexible Retrieval and Deep Archive transitions are asynchronous. AWS says destination-rate billing, the 90- or 180-day minimum-duration clock, and 40 KB of per-object overhead begin when the lifecycle rule is satisfied—not when physical movement finishes. Of that overhead, 8 KB is billed at Standard rates and 32 KB at the destination Glacier rate. Intelligent-Tiering billing changes after the physical transition. See AWS’s transition billing guidance.
Lifecycle actions themselves are asynchronous, so an eligible object may not immediately appear in its destination class. If eligible actions conflict, expiration takes precedence over transition; check rule filters and action timing in the Lifecycle configuration documentation.

Choose a storage class for the access pattern
Lower storage rates are useful only if the destination fits how the data is accessed and retained. AWS positions the classes broadly as follows; confirm current availability, retrieval terms, and resilience details for your Region in its storage-class comparison.
| Storage class | Typical fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| S3 Standard | Frequently accessed data | Baseline for frequent-access storage; compare its storage cost with expected access and request charges. |
| S3 Intelligent-Tiering | Data with unknown or changing access patterns | Consider how billing changes with physical transitions and review the class’s current terms. |
| S3 Standard-IA | Long-lived, infrequently accessed data | Include retrieval charges and the 30-day minimum duration. |
| S3 One Zone-IA | Infrequently accessed data whose resilience requirements allow the One Zone profile | Its resilience profile differs from Standard-IA; do not choose it unless that trade-off is acceptable. Include retrieval charges and the 30-day minimum. |
| S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval | Archive data that still needs immediate access | Include retrieval charges and the 90-day minimum duration. |
| S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval | Archive data that does not require immediate access | Include retrieval timing and charges, the 90-day minimum, and transition overhead. |
| S3 Glacier Deep Archive | Long-term archive data | Include retrieval timing and charges, the 180-day minimum, and transition overhead. |
Assess access frequency and latency, retrieval cost and timing, durability and availability needs, retention period, object size and count, and transition charges together. A cheaper storage rate alone does not establish that a class is cheaper for your workload.

Account for versions and configure the actions you need
In a versioned bucket, ordinary transition actions apply to current object versions. Older, noncurrent versions need their own noncurrent-version transition or expiration actions. If those versions remain stored, a policy that targets only current versions will not address their storage charges. AWS explains the distinction in its Lifecycle rules overview.
Before saving a rule, check the bucket’s versioning status, the rule’s filters, and whether you intend to transition or expire current versions, noncurrent versions, or both. Also account for expiration taking precedence where eligible actions conflict.
Verify savings in billing evidence
Use S3 Storage Class Analysis, cost allocation tags, and AWS billing and usage reports to understand current storage and assess a policy’s effect. Compare like-for-like periods and allow for objects that have not yet physically transitioned. Treat a modeled difference between storage-class rates as an estimate—not realized account savings—until billing evidence shows the change. AWS describes these approaches in its Storage Class Analysis documentation and cost allocation tags guide.
