Show the last lines once
Use -Tail with the number of lines to retrieve from the end of the file:

Get-Content -Path .app.log -Tail 20The command prints up to the last 20 lines and then finishes. Microsoft Learn documents -Tail as a count from the end of the file: Get-Content.

For just the final line, use -Tail 1. Microsoft’s example notes that this is faster than reading every line into a variable and selecting the last one.
Keep watching for new log lines
Add -Wait to print the selected tail first and then wait for additional lines:

Get-Content -Path .app.log -Tail 20 -WaitMicrosoft documents that -Wait checks for new content once per second, so updates are not necessarily instantaneous. The command keeps running until you stop it with Ctrl+C. -Wait is a dynamic parameter supplied by the FileSystem provider, works on file-system drives, and cannot be combined with -Raw.
If the file is deleted while the command is waiting, PowerShell reports a non-terminating error and the wait is interrupted. The documentation does not establish that -Wait will automatically switch to a replacement file after log rotation, so do not rely on it to follow a newly named or recreated log.

Use an alias or a literal path
Alias for -Tail
-Last is an alias for -Tail, so this is equivalent:
Get-Content -Path .app.log -Last 20-Tail is usually clearer in scripts and instructions because it names the operation directly. The Microsoft PowerShell 7.5 reference says the parameter was introduced in PowerShell 3.0: Get-Content 7.5 reference.

Path contains wildcard characters
If a path includes characters that PowerShell could interpret as wildcard syntax, use -LiteralPath:

Count and file-format limits
-Tailtakes an integer line count. A count of0returns no lines; a negative count causes an error.Get-Contentreads text content. It is not, by itself, a structured-log query engine; filtering or parsing depends on the log format and the additional commands you use.- The cmdlet offers an
-Encodingparameter, but the correct encoding depends on how the application wrote the file. There is no single encoding setting that is appropriate for every log.
