PowerShell Blocked by Avast? Find the Cause and Fix It Safely

Avast may block a script, suspicious PowerShell behavior, protected-folder access, or network traffic. Identify the component before restoring a file or adding an exception.

Avast can block a PowerShell script or file, stop a process because of its behavior, deny access to a protected folder, or block network traffic. Those problems need different fixes. Identify the Avast alert and component before restoring a file or creating an exception; a detection involving PowerShell is not automatically a false positive.

First identify what Avast blocked

Record the alert’s detection name, affected file path, named Avast component, and time. Note what was happening: opening PowerShell, running one script, downloading content, changing files or settings, or connecting to a remote host. The target may be a script or a file PowerShell created—not Microsoft’s PowerShell executable itself.

PowerShell starts, then Avast stops it during a task Behavior Shield or a detected child file Review the command, the process that launched it, and files it created or downloaded.
PowerShell runs but cannot write to a protected folder or access documents Ransomware Shield or Sensitive Data Shield; Windows permissions or Controlled Folder Access are also possible Check which control denied access, then use its app-access settings if appropriate.

Avast’s Behavior Shield monitors process behavior and can stop suspicious activity even when a file is not yet in its definitions database (Avast Behavior Shield documentation). Avast Firewall rules, by contrast, govern application network connections (Avast Firewall application rules).

Check whether the script is safe before changing protection

PowerShell is a legitimate Windows administration tool, but malicious software also uses it. Do not whitelist a script just because you need it to run. Confirm where it came from and whether it is the expected file and version.

#1 Best Overall
  • Prefer a download from the publisher’s official site or repository. Compare a published hash when available, and check a digital signature when the file type supports one.
  • Inspect what the script does, especially if it uses encoded commands or Base64 decoding, hidden-window execution, execution-policy bypasses, unknown downloads, credential access, persistence, or changes to security tools, services, registry settings, or startup locations.
  • Treat cracks, keygens, unofficial activators, and unofficial installers as high risk; do not restore them simply to make them run.
  • A multi-engine scan can offer another signal, not proof of safety. Avast recommends scanning an uncertain file with VirusTotal or submitting it for analysis; do not upload confidential or proprietary code without authorization.

Avast defines false positives as clean files incorrectly identified as malicious and provides a review route (Avast file whitelisting). A detection disappearing after an update does not by itself establish that a file is safe.

Review Quarantine and verify the detection

In current Avast Windows products, open Protection → Quarantine. Select the detection and note its name, original path, and timestamp. Quarantine isolates a file so outside processes cannot access or run it (Avast Quarantine instructions).

Before restoring a script or executable, obtain a fresh copy from the official source if possible, compare its hash or signature where available, and inspect the contents. If it still appears clean, submit it to Avast for review rather than assuming the alert is wrong. Avast’s submission instructions allow one file per submission, up to 500 MB, in a ZIP or RAR archive without a password; do not submit code you are not authorized to disclose (Submit a file or URL to Avast).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If evidence supports that the file is safe, Avast’s Quarantine menu offers Restore and, on Windows, Restore and add exception. The latter restores the file and adds an Avast exception. Avast warns that restoring quarantined files carries a high security risk; restoration is not a safety check. You can also select More options → Send for analysis → False positive from Quarantine (Avast Quarantine instructions).

Use an exception only for the control that caused the block

For current Avast Antivirus on Windows, the documented path is ☰ Menu → Settings → General → Exceptions → Add exception. Depending on the problem, choose a specific file or folder, command line, or website/domain, and select only the relevant scanning component where the interface allows it. Avast documents exception scopes for scans, Behavior Shield, File Shield, Hardened Mode, and CyberCapture (Avast scan exclusions).

  • Prefer a single trusted script, such as C:Users<user>DocumentsTrustedToolscript.ps1, over a whole directory. A folder exception can affect every future file placed there.
  • A command-line exception should be narrowly matched to the trusted command and parameters. Broad matching can also exempt commands you did not intend to allow.
  • Do not exclude C:WindowsSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0 or all .ps1 files. A broad exception can weaken protection for malicious scripts using the same interpreter.
  • A File Shield exception will not necessarily resolve a Firewall rule or protected-folder denial. Allowing protected-folder access does not make the application’s files exempt from antivirus scanning.

Menu names can differ in Avast One and on business-managed installations. On a managed device, an administrator may control exceptions and Behavior Shield policies, so contact the administrator instead of trying to work around policy.

If the script cannot access a protected folder

If PowerShell starts successfully but cannot change a protected folder or open protected documents, identify whether Avast’s Ransomware Shield or Sensitive Data Shield is responsible. In Avast, check ☰ Menu → Settings → General → Blocked & Allowed apps and review the relevant list. If the application is trusted and truly needs access, allow only the necessary application rather than granting a script interpreter broad access. Avast documents these feature-specific app controls separately from general scan exceptions (Avast Blocked & Allowed apps).

Windows permissions or Controlled Folder Access can produce similar symptoms. Confirm which product or Windows control reported the denial before changing access.

If PowerShell cannot connect to the network

If PowerShell opens but a command such as Invoke-WebRequest, Start-BitsTransfer, remoting, or a package manager cannot connect, inspect Firewall rather than adding a file-scanning exception. In current Avast Antivirus, open Protection → Firewall, open Firewall settings, choose View Firewall rules, and review the relevant entry under Application rules. Permit only the required connection and network profile (Avast Firewall application rules).

A Firewall permission changes network access; it does not override a malware detection from File Shield or Behavior Shield. If the rule is already appropriate, check proxy or DNS configuration, TLS or certificate errors, remote-server availability, and corporate network restrictions.

Check Windows when Avast is not the blocker

If there is no Avast notification or matching Quarantine item, look for the control that actually stopped the command. In Windows Security, review Virus & threat protection → Protection history. Defender can detect PowerShell-related activity too, and its exclusions reduce protection; Microsoft advises using exclusions carefully (Microsoft: Virus & threat protection in Windows Security).

Check execution policy with:

Get-ExecutionPolicy -List

A policy error is different from an Avast detection. Execution policy is not a complete malware-prevention control, and changing it is not a general fix for antivirus blocks.

To see which PowerShell executable is found in Command Prompt, run:

where powershell

In PowerShell, these commands show version information and the path of the current process:

$PSVersionTable
(Get-Process -Id $PID).Path

The usual Windows PowerShell path is C:WindowsSystem32WindowsPowerShellv1.0powershell.exe, but a system can also use PowerShell 7, 32-bit PowerShell, or a different launcher. A familiar filename alone does not establish that a file or command is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To test whether the issue is limited to one script, run this inert command:

Write-Output "PowerShell test"

If it works while one particular script fails, investigate that script, its parent process, downloaded content, and behavior rather than assuming PowerShell itself is blocked.

For PowerShell execution records, open Event Viewer and inspect Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → PowerShell → Operational. The available detail depends on local logging configuration. Also check AppLocker or WDAC events, Group Policy, file permissions, and endpoint-management software. On systems where Defender cmdlets are available, Get-MpComputerStatus can report Defender status; it does not identify an Avast block or prove a script safe. Microsoft documents Defender configuration through Set-MpPreference (Microsoft Defender PowerShell documentation).

After testing, remove unnecessary exceptions

Keep Avast and Windows updated, rescan after remediation, and remove broad exceptions that are no longer needed. If a script still triggers Avast after its source and contents have been verified, submit the detection to Avast and wait for review rather than repeatedly restoring it. On a work-managed computer, ask the administrator before changing Avast, Defender, AppLocker, or WDAC settings. Temporarily disabling a shield is not a normal fix; if an administrator uses it as a controlled diagnostic, protection should be turned back on immediately.
