Powerboard Tyche: The Open-Hardware PowerPC Laptop That Hasn’t Shipped

Powerboard Tyche publishes an ambitious PowerPC motherboard design, but the laptop is not a working retail product. Here is its documented status and desktop-first recovery plan.

Powerboard Tyche is a genuine open-hardware PowerPC computer project, not a finished retail laptop. The Power Progress Community and ACube Systems have published motherboard design work around NXP’s T2080 processor, but the custom notebook board had still failed to boot U-Boot in the project’s May 2025 status report. By June 2026, development had shifted to a desktop board intended to prove the core platform first. No verified, working Tyche laptop was available to buy as of August 16, 2026.

What the project is

The GNU/Linux Open Hardware PowerPC Notebook is a volunteer-led project of the Italian nonprofit Power Progress Community, working with ACube Systems. Its idea dates to about 2014; the community was established in 2016. The goal is a PowerPC-based machine for GNU/Linux, software freedom, platform diversity and hardware education, with motherboard design information available for study and possible reproduction.

The project is funded through donations rather than a conventional preorder campaign. Its public work includes electrical schematics, PCB design, prototype campaigns and software bring-up. That makes it a real engineering effort, but not proof of a shippable computer.

What “open hardware” means here

In this project, openness primarily concerns the board: schematics, PCB design files, Gerbers and production information where disclosure is legally possible. The team says it tried to avoid components requiring nondisclosure agreements and consulted open-hardware guidance.

Layer Status
Motherboard schematics and PCB design Published or intended for publication by the project
Processor silicon Commercial NXP T2080; not an open processor implementation
Firmware and microcode Mixed; U-Boot and Linux work is public, while vendor firmware may remain proprietary
Graphics and wireless Dependent on hardware support, drivers and potentially binary firmware
Manufacturing Still requires specialist assembly, testing, supply and certification

“Built on the PowerPC ISA” therefore should not be read as “a fully open computer.” It describes the processor architecture; the strongest openness claim applies to the motherboard design.

The project’s hardware and openness description

The proposed notebook design

The published notebook specification was built around a Slimbook Eclipse 15.6-inch chassis. These are design or prototype specifications, not specifications of a completed product.

Component Published design
Processor NXP T2080: four dual-threaded e6500 cores, 64-bit Power Architecture, AltiVec and 2 MB backside L2 cache
Memory Two DDR3L SO-DIMM slots
Graphics Removable MXM3 Radeon card
Storage M.2 2280 NVMe, two SATA3 connections and SDHC reader
Connectivity USB 3.0, USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
Audio C-Media 8828
Chassis integration Display, keyboard, backlight, webcam, speakers, battery and cooling supplied by the planned Slimbook chassis

The project lists 16 GFLOPS per core as a specification figure. That is not an independent benchmark and cannot be used to compare the machine with current Intel, AMD or Apple laptops. The T2080 is an embedded and networking-oriented processor, so mobile performance, battery life, idle power, suspend/resume and thermals would all need measurement on finished hardware.

Notebook hardware specification

What has actually been completed

  • Electrical schematics for the notebook motherboard.
  • PCB layout and related design publication.
  • Fundraising for signal-integrity analysis, three prototypes and hardware testing.
  • Collaboration with ACube Systems.
  • Work with an NXP T2080RDB development board.
  • Development involving U-Boot, device trees, Linux and Radeon initialization.

The T2080RDB is a reference development board, not the Tyche notebook motherboard. Software that runs on it does not demonstrate that the custom laptop board works.

PCB design campaign · Prototype campaign

The central engineering problem: booting the custom board

In its May 17, 2025 update, the project said that after two years with prototype motherboards it still could not boot the custom board into U-Boot. A technical report records verified power rails and some successful JTAG downloading, but the board still did not reach U-Boot and JTAG attachment remained unreliable.

The work involved hardware debugging, a JTAG debugger, U-Boot changes, device-tree development, Radeon initialization and comparison with the NXP reference board. The reports discuss several difficult areas without identifying one confirmed root cause for the entire failure:

  • Power sequencing, clocks, reset behavior and configuration-word settings.
  • Differences in the CPLD from the reference design.
  • DDR memory initialization.
  • PCI Express and graphics-card initialization.
  • Device-tree configuration in U-Boot.
  • Scarcity of older interface components.
  • Battery, charging and laptop power-management integration.

The important fact is the confirmed boot failure, not a definitive diagnosis that has not been published.

Why development moved to a desktop first

The project’s 2025 strategy change removes problems that are specific to notebooks: battery charging, embedded power control, display integration, tight thermal and mechanical constraints, and chassis connectors. A desktop board can establish processor, memory, PCIe, storage and boot support before those complications are added back.

This is a rational recovery strategy, but desktop progress is not laptop completion. A future notebook would still need validated battery management, display and keyboard integration, cooling, mechanical fit, wireless support and a reliable suspend and power-control design.

Desktop-first strategy

Powerboard Tyche desktop status in 2026

The desktop version is described as a micro-ATX board using the same NXP T2080 family platform. The project reported completed schematics and PCB design, and said the KiCad sources were published on April 24, 2026.

Feature Desktop design
CPU NXP T2080, four dual-threaded e6500 cores
Memory Two DDR3 slots
Expansion PCIe 3.0 x16 graphics slot, PCIe 2.0 x4 graphics slot and an additional PCIe connector
Storage M.2 2280 NVMe, two SATA2 connections and SDHC reader
Other I/O C-Media 8828, USB 3.0, USB 2.0 and two Gigabit Ethernet ports

In June 2026, the project was raising €11,000 for physical desktop prototypes. The page showed €2,280.56 from six donors, or 20.73% of that target, at the time reported. Prototype production was targeted for September 15, 2026 and testing for October 15, 2026; both dates depended on donations and were targets, not completed milestones.

Software expectations

The stated software direction includes GNU/Linux distributions such as Debian PowerPC64, Fienix, Void Linux and openSUSE, with U-Boot as the bootloader and PPC64 big-endian support where applicable. That should be separated into three claims:

  1. Linux supports PowerPC architectures.
  2. A distribution may boot an NXP development board.
  3. A particular release, desktop application, browser, driver or game works on a finished Tyche machine.

Only the first two are supported by the project’s development direction. The custom notebook board’s failure to reach U-Boot means there is no verified laptop software stack. Graphics are especially demanding because firmware, PCIe behavior, U-Boot initialization and Linux drivers must all agree.

Buying

No verified retail Tyche laptop, price, stock listing or delivery schedule was established as of August 16, 2026. The project has discussed possible future ACube board preorders, but that is not an active, verified offer. Donations do not entitle contributors to a physical product or refund.

Building

Reproducing the design would require advanced multilayer PCB assembly, scarce or obsolete parts, high-speed signal validation, firmware development, test equipment and substantial debugging. Published files reduce opacity; they do not create a supply chain, certified battery system, chassis inventory, graphics support or consumer warranty.

Trade-offs for a future user

  • Platform diversity: It would provide a rare non-x86, non-ARM desktop platform and valuable PowerPC porting experience.
  • Performance: The older embedded T2080 should not be assumed to match current laptop CPUs; independent benchmarks do not exist for a finished Tyche system.
  • Power: Battery endurance, thermals and suspend behavior remain engineering questions.
  • Compatibility: Many proprietary applications, binary packages, games and browser components target x86-64 or ARM64 first.
  • Graphics: A modular Radeon MXM card is attractive, but graphics bring-up is one of the hardest dependencies.
  • Manufacturing: Component availability, minimum orders, assembly, testing, certification and support can block an open design from becoming a product.

Practical alternatives

MNT Reform

MNT Reform is a purchasable open-hardware laptop platform aimed at repairability, modularity and community documentation. It is not PowerPC-based, so it is an alternative for readers who prioritize open laptop construction rather than Power Architecture compatibility.

Existing PowerPC systems

Used Apple PowerBooks, IBM workstations, AmigaOne systems and development boards can provide working PowerPC hardware, but they generally lack a modern open motherboard design and laptop service model comparable to the Tyche goal.

Bottom line: real project, not a shipping laptop

Powerboard Tyche is technically genuine and unusually ambitious. Its public board work, PowerPC focus and desktop pivot make it valuable to open-hardware and Linux communities. But the notebook had not achieved verified U-Boot boot, retail availability or a supported consumer software stack by August 16, 2026. The desktop board is a sensible attempt to stabilize the platform; only successful prototype boot and testing can show whether it leads to a usable laptop.
