Power over HDBaseT Explained: What It Does and What to Check

Power over HDBaseT combines DC power and data on one compatible category cable. Its 100 W headline rating is not the same as power reaching a device at the far end.

Power over HDBaseT (PoH) carries DC power alongside data over one HDBaseT category cable. The HDBaseT Alliance describes it as based on IEEE 802.3at, modified to deliver up to 100 W over four cable pairs for distances up to 100 m. That 100 W is a source-side headline rating, not a promise of 100 W at the remote device.

How Power over HDBaseT works

HDBaseT can carry audio/video and other signals over category cable. PoH adds DC power to that link, allowing compatible equipment at one end to power a device at the other over the same cable. The Alliance describes PoH as a modification of IEEE 802.3at intended to support safe power delivery across all four cable pairs. HDBaseT Alliance: Introduction to Power over HDBaseT

PoH is a feature of an HDBaseT connection, not a guarantee that any Ethernet cable, PoE equipment, or powered device will work with it. Both endpoints must support the relevant PoH implementation and classification.

What the power ratings mean

The often-quoted “up to 100 W” figure describes the Alliance’s headline rating for four-pair PoH at distances up to 100 m. Power at the transmitter and power available to the remote device are different measurement points: some power is lost along the cable.

  • Complete OREI Professional Solution | Backed by full OREI support and a 1-Year Warranty for peace of mind | Package includes: 1x HDMI Transmitter, 1x HDMI Receiver, 1x Power Adapter (PoC-enabled), 1x Bi-directional IR Kit, 1x Set of Mounting Ears, and a User Manual for easy setup and installation.
Configuration or rating point Power figure Source and qualification
Two-pair PoH Type 3, PSE output 47.5 W Microchip Technology, 2020 application-note comparison
Four-pair PoH Type 3, PSE output 95 W Microchip Technology, 2020 application-note comparison
HDBaseT Type 3, powered-device input after a 100 m cable 72.4 W Microchip Technology, 2020 application-note comparison; guaranteed figure at the PD input

These figures should not be treated as interchangeable. When checking whether a link can power a device, compare the device’s requirement with power available at the powered-device input, not just the source output or the 100 W headline. Microchip also notes that PoH follows IEEE 802.3at Type 2 cable types, while its higher supported current limits how many cables may be placed in a bundle. Microchip application note, “Designing a PoE PD Using PD702x0 and PD701x0” (2020)

Why compatibility and classification matter

PoH has specific classification behavior. Microchip says Type 3 classification is mandatory for PoH and that the powered device recognizes three-event classification and an HDBaseT flag. That makes PoH more than a matter of matching a cable plug or a nominal wattage: the equipment must identify and support the expected power arrangement.

Do not assume a generic PoE injector or PoE switch is interchangeable with an HDBaseT PoH transmitter/receiver pair. The cited technical documentation describes PoH-specific classification and does not establish universal cross-compatibility. Check the manuals for the exact source, receiver, and powered device before connecting them.

What to check before choosing equipment or cable

  1. Confirm PoH support at both ends. Check the exact transmitter/receiver or source/sink documentation; HDBaseT support alone does not establish that PoH is supported.
  2. Check the remote power requirement. Compare it with the available power at the powered-device input for the intended configuration and cable run.
  3. Verify classification compatibility. Confirm that the equipment supports the required PoH classification and HDBaseT signaling.
  4. Match the cable to the installation. Account for distance, power carriage, and HDBaseT data performance, and follow the equipment manufacturers’ cable guidance.
  5. Verify any certification claim. Consult the relevant current product documentation or catalogue rather than relying on a generic claim that a cable is “HDBaseT” or “PoH certified.” The HDBaseT Alliance site provides current overview and catalogue links.

Cable qualification matters because a cable must support both power carriage and HDBaseT signal performance. In a 2017 announcement, the HDBaseT Alliance and UL described a cable-certification program intended to assess both. The announcement said UL would evaluate cables under the then soon-to-be-published UL 4299 Outline of Investigation and described inspections and ongoing testing as part of surveillance. This is historical program context, not confirmation of the document’s current status or certification of a particular cable listing.
