For prepared infant formula, the key limits are 2 hours after preparation at room temperature, or 1 hour after feeding begins. If a prepared bottle will not be used within two hours, refrigerate it promptly and use it within 24 hours. Discard anything left in a bottle after a feeding. Powder and ready-to-feed formula have different storage rules once opened, so check the product label too.
Prepared formula: keep the two time limits separate
CDC guidance published May 14, 2026 sets different clocks for a prepared bottle. The first starts when formula is prepared; the second starts when the baby begins feeding. Refrigeration does not extend the limit once feeding has begun.

The CDC’s powdered-formula emergency guidance identifies ready-to-feed formula as the safest option when available in an emergency. For infants younger than 2 months, infants born prematurely, or infants with weakened immune systems, ask a clinician and follow public-health advice about extra precautions with powdered formula.

How to store unopened and opened formula
Unopened containers
Store unopened formula in a cool, dry indoor place—not in a vehicle, garage, or outdoors. Never use formula after its “Use By” date.
Opened powdered formula
Keep the lid tightly closed and store the container in a cool, dry place. Do not put powdered formula in the refrigerator, where moisture can affect the powder. Most products should be used within 1 month of opening, but the package label governs; check it for the specific product’s limit.

Mix and warm formula safely
- Use water from a safe source and follow the formula container’s preparation directions.
- Measure the water first, then add the amount of powder specified on the label. Incorrect dilution can affect a baby’s nutrition or hydration.
- Formula does not need to be warmed. If you choose to warm it, hold the bottle under warm running water and check a few drops on your wrist.
- Never microwave a bottle. Microwaves can heat unevenly and create hot spots that may burn a baby.
