A studio sale does not automatically erase the studio’s name or transfer every film-related right in the same way. The buyer may keep the brand, assign it to a successor business, or reorganize the company around it. Library ownership, distribution, and control of future productions can be separate parts of the deal.
Does a studio keep its name after a sale?
Sometimes. A sale changes ownership, but it does not by itself determine whether the familiar studio name stays in use, who uses it, or how the company is organized.

MGM kept its identity after its 2005 acquisition
When a consortium completed its acquisition of MGM in 2005, MGM described itself as an independent, privately held motion picture, television, home-video, and theatrical production and distribution company. The announcement shows that a studio name can continue after a change in ownership; it does not establish that every future sale will preserve a name. Sony’s 2005 announcement

In July 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery announced a plan to separate into two companies. It said the Streaming & Studios business—including Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, HBO Max, Warner Bros. Gaming Studios, and associated libraries—would be called Warner Bros. The Global Networks business would be called Discovery Global. This was an announced plan, not evidence by itself that the separation was completed. Warner Bros. Discovery’s naming announcement

Who owns a studio’s old movies—and who distributes them?
Owning a film library and distributing its titles are different functions. A company can own or control library assets while another company handles specified distribution work under an agreement. The deal terms determine which titles, media, territories, and periods are covered; a broad announcement may not spell out every title’s rights chain.
In 2005, MGM said Sony Pictures Entertainment would take on “certain distribution responsibilities” for MGM’s library through Sony’s global network. That wording describes a distribution role, not proof that Sony owned the library. MGM’s announcement described a library of more than 4,000 films and 10,400 television episodes at that time; those are historical figures from the companies’ 2005 announcement, not a current inventory. Can franchise rights be separate from the rest of the library?
Yes. Rights can vary by franchise and by use. Amazon said that after acquiring MGM it held distribution rights to all James Bond films. In a separate 2025 announcement, Amazon said it had reached an arrangement giving it creative control over future Bond productions. Those statements concern Bond; they should not be generalized to every MGM title or interpreted as a full account of each film’s rights. Amazon’s 2025 Bond announcement

How to read a studio-sale announcement
Separate the questions a headline may compress into the word “sold.” For the specific deal and titles you care about, look for these points in the announcement and related deal documents:
- What is being acquired? Identify the legal entity, business, or assets named in the transaction.
- Who owns the library? Do not infer a transfer of film ownership solely from a distributor’s name or from a distribution agreement.
- Who distributes each title? Check the stated media, territory, and term when those details are provided.
- Who controls future productions? Existing-film distribution and decisions about new films or franchise projects can be addressed separately.
- Where does the studio name go? It may remain with the acquired business or be assigned to one part of a reorganized company.
- What is the deal’s status? Distinguish a completed acquisition from a signed agreement, a proposed separation, or a transaction awaiting conditions.
What is the status of the Warner Bros. proposals?
Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix announced an agreement on December 5, 2025, for Netflix to acquire Warner Bros. following a proposed separation of Discovery Global. Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery later announced a competing merger agreement on February 27, 2026; Paramount said it expected a third-quarter 2026 close, subject to conditions. In June 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice said it had completed its investigation and found the proposed Paramount merger unlikely to harm competition in specified areas. These announcements describe agreements, expectations, and regulatory review—not confirmation that either transaction closed. Netflix and Warner Bros.
