Postmate Client: A Postman Alternative for API Testing in VS Code

Postmate Client brings REST, GraphQL and WebSocket API testing into VS Code. Compare its listed workflows, import support and vendor privacy claims with Postman’s own VS Code extension.

Yes—you can test APIs from inside VS Code, and Postmate Client is one option. It supports REST, GraphQL and WebSocket requests, with collections, environments, scripts, CSV-driven runs and response comparison listed among its features. Postman also has an official VS Code extension, so the choice is not between Postman and leaving the editor.

What Postmate Client does in VS Code

Postmate Client describes itself as a VS Code-native API client. Its product site lists a visual request builder, collections with nested folders, environments, request chaining, scripts and assertions, response comparison, CSV-based data tables, WebSocket connections and a command-line interface for collection runs and CI/CD automation. These are vendor-listed capabilities, not results of an independent feature test. Postmate Client’s product site

Protocols and request workflows

  • REST: Build and send HTTP API requests in the editor.
  • GraphQL: Send GraphQL requests through the extension.
  • WebSockets: Open WebSocket connections for API testing.

The published feature list establishes support for these protocol categories, but does not provide a detailed compatibility matrix for every protocol feature or server implementation.

Organizing, repeating and comparing tests

Collections and nested folders organize requests; environments and request chaining help reuse configuration and pass values between requests. Postmate lists scripts and assertions for checks, CSV data tables for data-driven workflows, and response comparison for examining differences. It also lists a CLI for running collections outside the editor, including CI/CD automation. The available product descriptions do not establish detailed limits, syntax compatibility, or a performance benchmark for these features.

How it compares with Postman’s VS Code extension

Postman is available in VS Code too. Its official extension documentation describes sending requests, managing collections and environments, troubleshooting requests, editing scripts and running collections. Postman’s scripts documentation covers pre-request and post-response scripts and sequential collection runs. Compare the particular workflow you need rather than assuming the editor extension is a full substitute for every desktop or team capability. Postmate’s public feature list emphasizes local-first use and names WebSockets, CSV data tables, response comparison and a CLI. Postman’s documented VS Code workflow includes collection and environment management, script editing and collection runs. The supplied official descriptions do not establish a complete side-by-side matrix for feature parity, script compatibility, data-driven execution, response diffing or collaboration.

What matters Postmate Client Postman in VS Code
Protocols REST, GraphQL and WebSocket, per Postmate’s product site. Postman’s cited VS Code documentation describes sending API requests; it does not specify a protocol matrix in the cited material.
Collections and environments Collections, nested folders and environments, per Postmate’s product site. Collection and environment management are documented for the VS Code extension.
Scripts and tests Scripts and assertions are listed by Postmate; detailed compatibility with Postman scripts is not stated. Postman documents pre-request and post-response scripts and sequential collection runs.
Data-driven runs CSV-based data tables are listed; detailed execution limits are not stated. Not stated in the cited Postman VS Code documentation.
Response comparison Response comparison is listed by Postmate; detailed behavior is not stated. Not stated in the cited Postman VS Code documentation.
Command-line automation A CLI for collection runs and CI/CD automation is listed by Postmate; invocation details are not stated here. Collection runs are documented; a CLI workflow is not established by the cited VS Code-specific material.
Storage and collaboration Postmate claims local storage and no cloud sync; collaboration capabilities are not stated. Account, storage and collaboration requirements are not established by the cited extension material.

“Not stated” means the cited product material does not establish that detail; it is not proof that a product lacks the capability.

Can you import Postman collections?

Postmate says it supports importing Postman v2.1 collections, as well as OpenAPI 3.0, Swagger 2.0 and cURL commands. Postmate Client’s import information Import support is a starting point, not a guarantee that every request, script, variable, authentication setup or collection behavior will transfer unchanged. For a real migration, import a representative collection and verify requests and tests in the target environment before relying on it.

Where requests and secrets are stored—and what the privacy claims mean

Postmate’s site says requests, tokens and payloads remain local, and that requests leave the machine when the user sends them to an API. Its Marketplace listing also describes local collections with no cloud sync, login or telemetry. Those are the publisher’s claims, not findings from an independent security audit. Postmate Client’s VS Code Marketplace listing

For production credentials or regulated data, distinguish local storage from a verified security guarantee. Review the current extension listing, license and product details, and your organization’s rules for editor extensions and credentials. The published descriptions do not establish an independent review of data handling.

AI-assisted test generation

The Marketplace listing describes test generation through a local MCP server that lets an editor agent read the live response panel. It says secrets are redacted before reaching the AI assistant and that Postmate does not provide its own AI backend. This workflow involves the editor assistant: whether data is sent to an AI service depends on the assistant’s configuration and your actions. Treat the redaction and data-flow description as vendor-provided information, not an independent audit result.

Which tool fits your workflow?

Postmate Client may fit if

  • You want a VS Code-centered request workflow and the product’s listed REST, GraphQL or WebSocket support matches your needs.
  • You value the vendor’s local-first approach and are comfortable evaluating its privacy claims for your own requirements.
  • You need the listed CSV data tables, response comparison or collection CLI, after confirming the details against your own use case.
  • You are willing to check imported requests and scripts rather than assuming complete Postman compatibility.

Postman in VS Code may fit if

  • You already use Postman collections, environments or scripts and want to work with them through Postman’s editor extension.
  • Your workflow depends on the VS Code extension capabilities Postman documents, including script editing and collection runs.
  • You need a specific collaboration, storage, protocol or automation behavior that should be confirmed in Postman’s current documentation before choosing.

Neither product should be selected on feature names alone. Verify the exact behaviors your team depends on—especially authentication, script compatibility, data-driven execution, collaboration and credential handling—using current product documentation and a representative workflow.
