For Postman v12, the most reliable offline route is to export a collection as JSON and use the Postman CLI’s local-file command to generate an OpenAPI specification. Treat LevelDB recovery as a build-specific investigation, not a documented Postman feature: the available documentation does not establish that Postman v12 stores collections in LevelDB.
Choose the route that fits the data you can access
| Route | What it uses | Offline suitability | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postman collection export and local CLI | An exported collection JSON file and the Postman CLI | The CLI documentation shows generation from a local file. | You need a collection export first; collection data does not automatically include environment or global-variable declarations. |
| Postman API Network example | A Postman API key, collection ID, and calls to the Postman collections API | Not an offline route; the example uses the API. | It requires credentials and network access. |
| Local-storage investigation | A candidate application data store and a LevelDB-aware inspection workflow if the store is confirmed to be LevelDB | Potentially local, but Postman v12’s use of LevelDB for collections is not established by the documentation cited here. | Build specificity, data integrity, and uncertain completeness make this a fallback. |
If you can still access the collection through Postman, start with its documented export. Investigate application storage only when export is unavailable or does not meet the need.

Export a collection as JSON
Export one collection
- In Postman, open Collections.
- Open the collection’s actions menu and choose More > Export collection.
- Choose the JSON export option and save the file where you can access it locally.
Postman’s v12 export documentation also describes bulk export of collections and environments from account settings. The bulk export covers workspaces created by the account, and its generated download is available for two days. Use the interface and account permissions applicable to your current build and plan; product behavior can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep related data in view
A collection export is not necessarily a complete account backup. Postman documents environments and global variables as separately exportable data, and the collection-format documentation explains that environment and global declarations sit outside the collection export. If requests refer to variables, export the relevant environment or global data separately when you need those declarations too.

Generate an OpenAPI specification from the local file
Postman’s CLI documentation gives this local-file command:
postman collection generate spec ./collection.json --name "My Spec" --format json
Replace ./collection.json with the path to your exported file and change the specification name if needed. This is the documented local-file form; it does not require a cloud collection ID. Check the current CLI documentation for command availability and behavior in the CLI version you use.

Review the generated specification
Postman v12 supports importing OpenAPI specifications, with options to import one as a collection or as a specification paired with a collection. Before relying on generated output, check that it targets the OpenAPI version your consumers expect and inspect representative requests, parameters, bodies, and responses. The documentation cited here does not establish lossless conversion, so do not assume every script, authorization detail, example, runtime behavior, or Postman-specific field is preserved.

What a LevelDB investigation can—and cannot—tell you
Google’s LevelDB implementation notes describe a database as a set of files in a directory, rather than one standalone file. Recent updates are appended to a log and reflected in an in-memory memtable; sorted table files hold entries and deletion markers; a MANIFEST records table and metadata information; and CURRENT points to the active MANIFEST. These are general LevelDB implementation details, not evidence that Postman uses LevelDB for collection storage.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Preserve the candidate data before examining it
If recovery is necessary, make a read-only copy of the entire candidate database directory before analysis. Do not experiment on the only original with an unverified tool. This is prudent because LevelDB state is spread across coordinated files; copying or inspecting only one file may not represent the current logical database.
Use the log format correctly
LevelDB’s documented log format divides data into 32 KiB blocks. A record includes a CRC32C checksum, a little-endian length, a type, and data. FULL marks one complete user record; FIRST, MIDDLE, and LAST identify pieces of a record split across blocks. A raw log scanner must reassemble fragments and account for corruption and block trailers; searching isolated fragments for JSON is not a reliable way to recover logical values.

Do not assume Chromium’s IndexedDB encoding
Chromium documents an application-specific encoding for IndexedDB keys and values stored over LevelDB. That convention is relevant only after independently identifying the target as Chromium IndexedDB. It does not establish Postman v12’s storage location, database family, key prefixes, serialization, or collection schema.

Questions to resolve before building a porter
A reverse-engineered porter should not treat a plausible-looking database record as a complete collection. Establish the following for the exact Postman build and operating system under investigation:
Best Value
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Whether that build stores collections in LevelDB at all, and the location and ownership of any relevant database.
- Whether values are plain JSON or use a wrapper, serialization, encryption, compression, or another storage layer.
- How to resolve current values, tombstones, versioning, and unsynced state when files may contain historical data.
- Whether the proposed conversion preserves collection ordering, folders, variables, authorization, scripts, request bodies, examples, and Postman-specific fields.
- Which OpenAPI version and conversion behavior the target CLI release produces, including fields it may not represent.
Until those points are verified for the target build, describe them as investigation questions rather than Postman product facts. A successful parse of some records would not, by itself, prove that the recovered data is current or complete.
